No, I meant the one on the Millett MAX (with the AKGs on top of it, 3rd pic down).

Default Modded Rotel RCD-855

Finished up the prototype for a discrete I/V stage in my Rotel CD. This player uses the standard Philips late '80s/early '90s players (SAA7210 / SAA7220B / TDA1541a) chipset. I was trying to get this finished for the Chiunifi meet last weekend, but hadn't had time to do testing, etc., so I wound up not going (should have anyhow...) It sounds really good, much better than any opamps I have rolled through this player. I really wanted to compare it to a G08 or something at the meet.

Mods include:
  • Shottky PSU diodes (31DQ10)
  • Tentlabs XO on a PFM Flea board (my own layout), modified to provide /2 direct DAC clocking and get the SAA7220 out of clock distribution since it is incredibly noisy!
  • Tread board taking ~25Vdc down to 18-20Vdc for the Flea
  • home layout of an amb o22 PSU for the discrete stage (I needed a smaller board than the o22 at 3.5" x 6.5")
  • rbroer's less simple I/V for TDA1541a, modified to use 2SA970/2SC2240 transistors, FET buffer per cetoole's I/V stage (I removed this for the time being), and muting relay

Thanks guys. Personally, I think it looks pretty rough (it is a proto), but it so far sounds great. I'll have to take it to a meet sometime to do some comparisons as I don't have alot to compare to... just what my ears tell me.

Balanced MillettMax fed from OPUS S/PDIF receiver and DAC. Lots of help overcoming some really stupid fuckups. Now, to find the right phones.

Finally came up with a way to "case" my Hagerman Bugle so that I could use it with my vinyl rig. The solution just seemed to make sense, to me at least.

Take one piece of scrap cherry from cabinet making early this year. Put a 1/2" chamfer on the top face using router table. Sand and apply clear semi-gloss poly. Total cost $0.

My eventual plans include the matching power supply but I want to try dialing in the cart (and possibly replacing it) first to see if I'm in it for the long haul with vinyl.

Looks great, Nate.

I'm doing something similar with a recent project of mine.

Did you use C37 lacquer on it (ala Altmann)? Oh wait, that is for maple...

Looks nice Nate! Gotta love cherry.

Your photography magic turns mundane look into the exotic. Maybe add a few saucy concepts like how the open chassis-free design lets the amp breathe and gives the sound more air, while the thick wooden base keeps dynamics at a maximum through a strong foundation in the lower registers of the music. It would raise the class of the kit from a value toy to a class A Zen component.

I envy your well rounded set of skills.

You know you are, Nate.
Though, I must admit I've been contemplating about parting with my vinyl rig due to various reasons.
