Oh dear, you had to go and bring that up. There goes my train of thought for the next half hour...

So, I'm kicked back right now with my newly balanced HD580s chilling to a little Swallow the Sun on the mini32 and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed by what this little beasty is capable of. I'm sure more than just a little of what I'm hearing is due to the Wadia but it's good to know that the amp is capable of faithful reproduction. It's no world beater by any stretch of the imagination but better than it should be, that's for sure.

Is that one of those trick questions?

I dunno that I would use 8397's. but if I was going to build a Balanced CMoy......

(top side ground plane omitted for clarity)

I would do it all myself.

(creating a cheesy Express PCB layout on the craptop gave me something to do while the power is out)

Not really, for those of us without the know how to just sit down and design a board I was wondering if you had a better suggestion. I wanted to use a 8397 for its high output current capability and given the trouble that people have had implementing that chip I wanted a known good layout. There was also a time component for this build as I wanted to have it up and running in time for the NYC meet this weekend, so again having a known good, readily available PCB was nice.

And since you can that makes perfect sense. Still curious what opamp you would choose, if you want to share.

I'd go 8610 or the 8397 like you did.

http://www.analog.com/UploadedFiles/...ets/AD8599.pdf

Or

http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/ths4032.pdf

Or even the national LM4562 POS

http://cache.national.com/ds/LM/LM4562.pdf

if you think you might want more output current you could always tack on some "SOHA buffers".

(we think the OPA1632 would be a better choice as a balanced front end with those buffers but that will have to wait)

OPA1632 "version"

This one has a particularly cool ability to accept single ended inputs with the flip of a switch.

I may just have to order a couple of these Xin style (with no solder mask and silkscreen).

Now throw in room for a couple of cinemags, and a 4pin lemo for output, take mini in, balance it, lemo out, the perfect balanced portable iem rig

Added a couple of Bud Purvine's "electron pools" and changed the volume control to shunt mode. Also cleaned up the wiring a bit, not that you can tell.

Thanks! Actually it's the camera which makes things easy. Those yellow things are LED's, they tell me when the tubes are warm and working.

I could, but it looks pretty ugly in daylight. I'll refrain from making a "your mom" joke. :P

Another Millett MAX that I finished this weekend. This one is equipped with Black Gates on the signal positions with Russian K42's bypassing the output Black Gates. The BJT Diamond Buffer output uses 2SC2238/2SA968 complementary pairs. The switch on the left of the frontplate is a two-position Low-Z/High-Z switch. There is also a set of pre-amp outputs on the back that are switched from the headphone jack (OFF when a headphone is plugged in).

The tip jacks cover all of the important test points - Gnd, V+, L&R tube bias, and L&R DB bias. There are adjustment holes in the top plate so that all of these settings may be adjusted without taking the lid off.

I've long shied away from Black Gates because of the price and hype, but they are really a cut above and put the MAX in another league compared to other caps. They took about 40-50 hours before they stopped sounding "congested," however.
