Land of the Lost - 7.5/10

I can definitely say this was quite a pleasant surprise considering the trailer looked stupid. Mostly funny, but with a few lame moments here and there which kind of ruined the momentum. Typical Will Ferrell kind of humour though, so if you hated shows like Elf, Stepbrothers, Zoolander you will probably dislike this one.

    Chrysalis (2007, french subtitles)

very nice movie, a sci-fi (my fave genre)
and I was very impressed with it..

unlike some othr scfi movies it didn't zone me out into boredom with too much abstract mood-setting or mindfucking (a la david lynch), but it had good special effects and fight scene choreograph to keep me entertained until it made its point at the end
(scifi movies always have something to say about human nature)
Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

    Gran Torino.

Completely over the top, but still enjoyable.

Gran Turino. Meh. I expected better. The acting was good (except for the kid behind the door), I liked the chemistry, but all the characters were complete caricatures, and I hated the ending. I just hope this is not his last movie.

Taking of Pelham 123 -- I liked. Yeah, it had that typical eMpTyV music-video look to it, but I enjoyed the fact that they didn't even wait for the opening credits to finish to start in on the crap, and it kept up a fairly good tension the entire time. Travolta was believably rage-ful, and there were some really well done moments.

Land of the Lost -- my pet-sitter set off the home alarm while we were out of town watching the movie. To cancel the police car and give them the right alarm code I missed 15 minutes of the movie, and would never known I missed the fermented coconut and crab claw picnic if my kids didn't tell me about it later. It could have been worse, I might have missed the hadrosaur pee.

The Hangover: Was hilarious if you like that kind of stuff. Now want to go to Vegas and make it epic.

Hancock: Interesting to say the least. Don't want to give anything away.

    Speed Racer.

I once read a review, on an anime review site of all things, that called this movie "punishingly self-obsessed pop art at 200 miles an hour" and having seen it I think that's a very apt description. It really is something that exists for its own sake and doesn't even care if you like it. It's certainly a very arrogant way to make a movie in today's commercial environment.

But you know what, I liked it. A lot.

The art style really reminds me of Flash Gordon but that's a good thing. And the way in which it replicates the conceited, self-obsessed, dorky, and campy feel of the original TV show is really great, and better still is the near-complete breakdown between the boundaries of CGI and live action. This sort of thing is bound to happen sooner or later but it takes a bold and arrogant pair of filmmakers to actually go ahead and do it, and this is also a plus in my book.

By no means is this a masterpiece in the traditional sense, but it is an important movie regardless.

    Up.

People tell me they cried multiple times during the movie... I can see when they might cry, but to me, the moments weren't incredibly touching. As a whole, I enjoyed the movie. Definitely had parts that were funny. Different kind of humor than The Hangover was, but still a good laugh nonetheless.

    Transformer 2.

Very entertaining movie (minus the standard Michael Bay-ness of it all)

Japan release is on the 20th, local theater had a early showing today on the 19th. They even handed out small printed certificates/pamphlet that have 6.19.09 printed on them on them. Click here to enlarge I like Michael Bay, but sometimes his style just gets to me...this movie was certainly not one of the times.

    I Love You, Man - 8.5/10

Damn, this was funny. I was deciding between this and Drag Me To Hell. No regrets. Ending was typical though.

Year One - skip this one and go see Land of the Lost or Imagine That. Tomorrow we go see The Proposal.
