The special effects probably would have still been CGI. And then there's this, which I heard is pretty good:

Thanks JP for the Redbelt mention. Watched it a couple days ago and it was far better than I expected from a martial arts flick.

Just got around to "The Day the Earth Stood Still".
I was completely underwhelmed, though with Keanu Reeves starring I'm not sure why I expected more.

Guilty pleasure -- it actually has a story, so take that, naysayers.

Harry Pothead and the Half-baked Prince... errr... or whatever it was called.
Maddeningly uneven movie. Some parts were absolutely stellar, some parts were improperly done, and more parts weren't there at all when they very much should have been. The result is a truly beautifully filmed movie with very uneven pacing and a confusing story, or one that I would imagine will be confusing if you're watching the movie without having read the book. The editing is probably at fault, but so is the directing, and the tension, which is very nicely gathered and maintained throughout, simply dissipates when it should culminate (when you see it you'll know what I mean).
I remember the cast were saying something to the effect of David Yates being the best director they ever worked with. After the 5th movie, I wanted some of what they were smoking. But after this one, I can sort of see it. He's not the best director in the series but he could become it with a bit more growth and maturity. The visual aspect is there, the atmosphere is definitely there, and the directing style, which was completely absent in the 5th movie, is very strong here and is very unique (Cuaron's 3d movie is the closest to this one in terms of style but Yates goes even further artistically). But pacing and maintaining tension definitely needs some work.
Still, when all is said and done, I had no hopes for the series after watching the 5th movie and reading that Yates was going to do them all from that point on. That's changed now. This movie is much better than the one before, and I suspect that the next one will be better still. I would rate it behind the 3d movie, but probably on par with or slightly ahead of the first 2. The 4th I thought was a stylistic mismatch between movie and director (i.e. Mike Newell is great when he's doing stuff like Four Weddings and a Funeral, but not for dark fantasy which is essentially what the 4th book was) and the 5th movie was junk.
Oh, and Jim Broadbent was awesome. And Daniel Radcliffe was dismal. The rest of the cast were pretty much as expected. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint will have a career after these movies. Radcliffe will not, unless he has some acting talent he's not showing at the moment.
Fast & Furious, crap movie
3:10 to Yuma (the recent remake)
Nice big-ish budget western. Very well done.

Watchmen. i purposefully didn't see it in the theater, wanting to be able to really sit down and watch it. i'm a big fan of the comics. it put a lie to the idea that Watchmen couldn't be filmed, but i'm not convinced that this made it a good movie. i had the same weight in my guts feeling at the end of the movie that i had reading the end of the comic, though, which suggests that Snyder did his job.

I saw Half-Blood Prince. It was massively disappointing.
Hmm, my Directors Cut was 3 hours as well (I'll have to check). I have a 720p rip of the DC Blu.
edit: regular version is 2:42, DC is 3:06
Never mind the DC doesn't have the Black Freighter. It does haveSpoilerHollis Mason's death scene, which the theatrical didn't have (I think)

it was indeed the DC, then, but it didn't have anything other than passing glimpses of the black freighter.

Up in 3D. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
