Default What is that movie that...?

Within this thread, ask others to identify a movie that is eluding you. Such as:

I remember seeing a World War II movie that was ultra-violent. Every single time a bullet hit someone, there was this great big gout of blood, and we're talking machine-gun fire. The budget for squibs alone must have been enormous.

I want to say that James Coburn was one of the stars, but looking at his filmography, I'm not recognizing it.

It had a Wild Bunch style to it, but that was a western, wunnit?

Anyone have any ideas? Or do you have a movie that's bothering you?

The plotline I remember seems to follow Bridge on the River Kwai, though, so I don't think it's Cross of Iron.

Yeah, it's quite possible that I'm mistaking James Coburn for Lee Marvin. But I remember there being a big large-scale, large-cast fight at the end, and if I remember Dirty Dozen correctly, the finale is mostly at night, whereas the movie I'm thinking of, the big gunfight at the end was during the day.

I'll take a look at Where Eagles Dare.

And no, it was much older than Kill Bill, and there was a machine gun or two.

If it's Coburn, it's gotta be Cross of Iron. If it's Lee Marvin, then it is probably Big Red One or Dirty Dozen, although I am not sure how either one relates to Bridge on the River Kwai.

Big Red One sounds like a distinct possibility, but none of the reviews are saying anything about "ultraviolent", they're saying things like "realistic despiction of the horrors of war" -- there was nothing realistic about these depictions.

Yeah, feel free to lower the priority on that particular clue -- that could be just my mind making a connection that isn't there.

The quality of the film seemed more upscale -- more Tora Tora Tora, less Midway.

Cross of Iron is ultra violent -- it's a Peckinpah movie and he does the 7 angles of death thing (or whatever he called it). But it is from the German perspective and Coburn is a German sgt. Here is a pic:

All of the movies you mention are set in the Pacific theater involving the Japanese. Is this movie about war in Europe or the Pacific?

Coburn is in The Great Escape, which may be the prison camp theme you were thinking about but there is almost no real war action and the shooting is very un-gory.

I don't remember, to be honest. I'll add Cross of Iron to the list, but from watching this clip from YouTube, I remember it being higher budget:

I mean the editing was immaculate, you could see every drop of blood, and I don't think there was a single bullet impact that wasn't completely exaggerated.

But this was over 20 years ago that I remember seeing it, so my memory of it could be radically distorted.

Think Scarface-level violence. Well, not quite like this, but close:
