I'm not sure why I've held off calling you on your "reasoning" skills when you're comfortable "strengthing up" those arguments with "fucker" and "assholes" and "dolt", but hey, I'm feeling generous so let me spell it out simply for you Dusty. I was responding to en480c4 that it was all "common sense". I suppose that's usually the default end of line - "hey ... it's err obvious. I thunk it!" In fact when we last spoke of spoilers you hit with the slamdown logic of "if you don't know I can't explain it to ya" [insert "yuck, yuck" for dramatic effect]. And now you've also graciously offered a repeat of the "self-centered ego-centric" claim (which is sooooo spot-on as this started with your imaginary ending spoiler [knuckle roll on forehead]). It would probably just be easier for us both to cut and paste that previous conversion and save everyones time, so let me suggest that. Deal? And I promise I will attempt a What Would Jesus Christ Do? and What Could Dusty Chalk Conceivably Be Thinking At This Moment That Could Correctly or Incorrectly Be Linked To The Next Film Mentioned Thus Potentially Construed As A Spoiler... Or Not? approach to all further posting in this thread [well now that old thread], okay? Consider that a gift. It's the least I could do for the entertainment value you've given us so far.

Finally (and yes call me whatever works for ya after, I'll hold off responding - scouts honor), is it really so complicated to see that the more sloppily the spoiler tag is applied to everything the less effective it is as a tool? If a few really are so sensitive to all preconceived expectations to equate "X movie is based on Y source" to "they all died in the end," what are they asking of everyone else? That the majority (and it must be clear from some of the responses here that is so) needs to either A) give up possibly useful or interest setting relatively benign knowledge by not clicking or B) risk revealing plot pot/climax/ending by clicking. Every spoiler click becomes Russian roulette and aren't far more people compromised and the likelihood of actual/traditional spoilers accidentally exposed increased? Isn't that selfish?

Yes. Of course if it's sloppily applied, then it's less effective as a tool. That's not the imperative -- the imperative is to use it well. If you phrase your sentence exactly opposite, you realize that we're agreeing -- if the spoiler tag is applied well, then it becomes more effective as a tool. Which is what I'm asking.

When it's used well, it seems fine to me. (cf. Dan's posts, for example -- completely readable).

(le sigh)

You're right -- we're repeating ourselves at this point. The difference is, you're the one "breaking the rules", so if you continue to be difficult about not using spoiler tags appropriately, then I'm in a small position to do something about it. Spoilering movies for others == being an asshat, our one rule.

EDIT: Not that you've really been difficult so far -- it was one little edit, and I've already been made clear that it, in itself, did not spoiler the movie. And discussing spoilering does not constitute being difficult either. I mean, you are being difficult, but not asshat difficult. Just whiny child difficult.

EDIT: And yeah, when my patience gets tested, I'm not a saint. Go figure.
