    Default GitS 2.0

No, not the sequel, the remake. link

Entirely speculating here, but there's an entire market of muggles for colorized movies. They don't believe in black and white (!) . I suspect this is an attempt to satisfy the corresponding audience in anime, who will never be happy with the original master of the original movie. I know people who can't watch "older" movies, because the production values are so low.

Not sure how I feel about this. I know I need to see it, might even need to own it (see the comment about the soundtrack, one of my favorites), but not sure it'll replace the original.

Looks interesting. Can't wait to see it. I'm not a big fan of going back and making things "better" but when it comes to GitS, I'll watch anything at least once.

IMHO, great re-do of the soundtrack, rather underwhelming remake of the movie.

Overall, I've been impressed with the remakes of "classic" animes so far (evangelion, FMA, DBZ etc) This one looks just as good

and I guess they re-recorded the soundtrack?

Meh, I'd rather see more done in the Stand Alone Complex series.

You've already seen it? So did they re-record the soundtrack? That might be awesome.

I know Innocence has a blu-ray release (as if I'm gonna watch that pseudo-intellectual wankfest again anytime soon), but I never heard anything about one for SAC. What would be really cool is having the 1st season redrawn to match the 2nd season.

What?!?!? That movie just gets better with repeated viewings. All the quotes that they drop are merely asides.

    If you say so.

I know I wouldn't be able to make it all the way through that movie again for a repeat viewing. I would do a better job staying alert during a full marathon viewing of "slow" titles like Madlax or the entire Crest/Banner of the Stars series.

Hey, I can't help it if I like real substance, not a facade of depth and meaning. If I'm gonna watch something empty just for nice visuals and action scenes, it shouldn't pretend to be something it isn't.

Innocence is unforgivable considering how well Mamoru Oshii did with the first movie (and his other works)... it's as if it were directed by somebody else who watched and didn't understand the original, but still wanted to keep all the philosophical elements.

On the contrary, it's the perfect sequel by not trying to be GITS 2.0, and instead, making the story about Batou rather than Motoko Kusanagi, who was not exactly in the best position to be central to the story. The story actually makes sense, it's not a facade nor is it pseudo-intellectual.

    Spoiler
Little girl has soul stolen, starts wreaking havoc with the dolls so that someone figures it out and comes to save her. Batou does, the end.

I will give you that it's a "difficult" movie, and I have to admit, I didn't get it on the first viewing, so you're really in no position to criticize the story if you don't understand it. You can criticize the movie for being difficult, but you can't criticize the story for being non-existent, that's just...incorrect.

No, I understood perfectly well what was going on during the story by the end, what little of it there was after stripping away all the quotes and meaningless symbolism used to pad it into a full movie. When you take an outline of a story, even a good one, and throw in a bunch of rubbish to make it seem more meaningful to the average viewer, it becomes a facade. It's just like when people read way too much into some parts of the religious symbolism in NGE that were added just to seem mysterious while overlooking the actual/plot-relevant religious and psychological themes (except in that case there was still a sufficiently strong story after filtering out the meaningless junk).

Not to metion I feel Batou has got to be one of the worst characters in the GITS universe to use as the main character; his character development has always been too dependant upon the Major.

EDIT: And I never said the story was non-existent, that's also incorrect. I said the the appearance of depth and meaning was a facade. It's not a very deep or complex story by any stretch, but the movie wants you to think it is.

With regards to a remake of GitS SAC 1 and 2, there are torrents with a compressed version (without the stand alones?) listed on some torrent sites. I believe they are H264 and prettier than the originals. Not positive about the source though.

@Dustry: GitS Movie 2.0 is availble by fansub I believe. I can post torrent links if people want.

Oh, you mean the condensed movie versions of SAC? Those don't really count as a remake.

Okay, I still disagree with you, but if you want to let things lie after this, I will too.

But first, my last attempt to sway you: let's go to a completely different movie -- Pulp Fiction. Did you feel the whole conversations about Quarter Pounders in France and $5 milkshakes and whatnot were "padding" to add to the appearance of depth? No, it was inane banter, but it was still central to the movie in that it developed the characters in the eyes of the audience. I'm not saying the dropping of quotes in GITS:I was anywhere near as "successful" (from the movie-making perspective) as Pulp Fiction -- it wasn't, it was pretentious -- but it was still pleasant fun, once you realize what they're doing. I mean, even the original GITS had some slow, contemplative spots.

I have the soundtrack, and there's some interesting points made about the symbology used in the film. I agree that it was pretentious, but...shit, I have a history as a goth, I obviously don't have too much of a problem with pretentiousness. Although...you watch a lot more anime than I do, I would think you would be immune to pretentiousness (and preachiness, but that's not a problem with this movie, just with a lot of others) by now.

penger -- unnecessary, but thanks for the offer. I'll look it up if I have time before it's released, but I'm in no rush, and would rather have the soundtrack in all its glory, so will probably just buy it when it comes out.

They, uh, wouldn't happen to be true and proper surround mixes of the music, would they? (hope hope)
