Discipline, Beat and TOAPP, are great albums and the first two were in super heavy rotation when they came out and I was in college. I also knew Court of the Crimson King, but only more recently got into Starless and Bible Black (got that from somebody at a meet), Lark's Tongue and Red. I think those are pretty great albums and obviously quite earlier/different from the 80s stuff. I have never spent much time with the really more recent stuff from the 90s and beyond but I also was never that impressed by it.

The realy early stuff (vocals--Lake or Wetton) was way beyond their era. But with beginning of the Belew period the experimental orientation lost it's soul.

Too bad they did not choose to age the same way as Genesis did with their Beer commercial music répertoire at least they would be much richer than they are now....Click here to enlarge

Court, Larks', and Red, (and maybe Starless) are pretty much what I was referring to. I think Discipline is still great, but from there I can't say too many good things. Kind of weird, since I actually started with Discipline.
I'm sure Fripp would agree that more of the same wouldn't have been the proper course of action anyway, though.

well, it depends. for people who have been living and breathing the release of this album, probably not. no dragons appeared when i hit play. it's a bit poppier than i would ideally like.

at the end, however, it's a pretty solid album, and it has a few really killer songs (the rest of the songs are range from pretty good to quite good). i'm a big GnR fan from pretty far back (i saw them on tour when i was in, i think, sixth grade), and this album isn't terribly similar to Lies, or even the Illusions. it's good, though.

I thought it sounded like an overproduced UYI (if that's possible) with some randomness thrown in. It's not bad.

oh. i don't think it sounds much like either. there are some yowly ballads, but that's just Axl. definitely no hyper-growly blues in it.

There are quite a few ballads on Chinese Democracy. I agree no bluesy riffs, but to me it feels like he was going for the same epic feel of the UYI albums.

It's definitely not Appetite for Destruction for those that loved that album. I don't mind the change they took with the UYIs that many people hate.

i agree both were attempts at being epic, but the approaches were very different, to me.
