i got the Steve Hoffman remastered DCC version of Dylan's Highway 61 revisted yesterday, and i just got around to listening to it. i have to say, i'm blown away. Highway 61 Revisited is one of my favorite albums, and i thought that my SACD version of it sounded good. i was wrong. well, not wrong, i guess, as it does sound good, but the DCC version sounds much more "right." i know that Hoffman dug around in the Columbia archives until he found the actual master tape, as opposed to the "cut master" used for the LPs and most of the CD releases, and i guess the SACD version was made with the cut master. the DCC version is much more balanced sounding top to bottom and doesn't have the almost too pronounced midrange that the SACD has. i also now think that the SACD has too much noise reduction, as the DCC version presents a grittiness in Dylan's voice that is absent in the SACD, but which sounds very correct. the soundstaging is also different, being more coherent as well as more broad with better instrument separation. i really reccomend this version for any Bob Dylan fans who haven't heard it. pretty killer.
