  1. Today
  2. I listened to a pair of Avantgarde horn speakers a while ago (one of the larger sets hooked up to some first-rate electronics, like their current Trio G3) - it wasn't honky-sounding at all. Definitely worth an audition!
  3. Good thought, Kerry. I checked but the resistance levels on the negative side are about the same as positive side for the amp boards. PSU itself does not show a short. I plan to rebuild the PSU, test it on the bench at low input voltage, then ramp it up. Could just be one of the silicon devices was weak and took the others along with it.
  4. I've always been curious, but biased against, the horn speaker systems. I keep thinking honkiness. I'd need to listen to some good ones with some good neutral acoustic material such as classical. I could be all wet. And they don't meet WAF factors whatsoever And yes, Steve, all the PS Audio stuff kinda surprised me. I didn't know they were still around, and never thought their stuff was all that well thought of. One thing I am toying with buying is a pair of Schitt Tyr monoblocks to replace my Odyssey Stratos.
  5. I had to dream somewhat reasonably, because my harem of twinks is going to cost a fortune to maintain.
  6. Your Mini's are what made this a choice for me. Otherwise I would go with something like the Klipshhorn or the crazy Avantgarde Acoustic Trio G3. :} For digital bits - there are options, but probably: dCS - Vivaldi APEX stack.. Yes that is the Transport II - Upsampler - DAC - and Master Clock set. I would trust that they wound get most of the bits right. I have not heard this set but I have liked dCS sound in the past. And I really like the different wave designs on the front.
  7. I definitely think Steve needs to dream bigger on the audio dream system. PS Audio is not expensive or exclusive enough. 😁 The OMA Imperia was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread. JP and I had a demo at OMA and I think it is the best speaker system I have ever heard. Huge presence but intimate sound. I wish I had a bigger house and could justify the cost, for example by actually listening to my OMA Mini system more often...
  8. Love the OMA stuff! Almost went to work for his Brother when I stayed at Al's back in 2013. He has a woodworking shop in Oakland.
  9. Sonus Faber sounded so good. They were on my list back in the day. So I started looking around and I found a few things that initially fall on my list. For right now just speakers and amp. Oswalds Mill Audio - imperia pushed by some 300Bs - Pair of WE 97A monoblocks More to come
  10. Agatha Christie, unless you count that hack Shakespeare.
  11. Back when I read all the audio mags, Sonus Faber released the Extrema in 1991, and that's the speaker I lusted after for years.
  12. Yesterday
  13. Does Steven King hold the record for most books to movies?
  14. Could there have been any kind of short? Seems like it blew out the protection stuff along with the pass FET.
  15. Hello all! Long time since I have posted here but I continue to lurk. I just had the negative power board go out on my Blue Hawaii. The c2m1000 literally blew its top off. 3 other components also bit the dust in the process. Parts are ordered and will replace in next couple days. All other parts appear to test OK. Looking at the parts that failed, any ideas on the cause or which part failed first that led to the others failing? And more importantly, are there any parts you recommend I replace regardless of how they test, given the mode of failure? The Amp had been working great over the past few years, though with the Carbon and my trusty old SRX Plus, it sometimes went several months between uses. EDIT: I just recalled that I did the build when the C2M1000 was out of stock, so used the SCT2H12NZGC11 from Mouser listed in my Feb 2021 post in this thread (right hand column below). Maybe that was the issue?
  16. There are worse deals... https://petapixel.com/2024/04/23/this-ai-powered-poetry-camera-turns-photos-into-poems/
  17. Got the Q back from repair. Of course I managed to not have any batteries with me (I’m out of town), so I can’t test it. They returned my lens cap, which is a good sign. Generic batteries and charger arriving tomorrow. If it works properly, even with the repair cost, I got a good deal. If not, well, in for a penny in for a pound and I send it to Leica for their replacement parts, and thus I will have gotten a very bad deal. Q2 money, then.
  18. Agreed Mikey, I don't read audio mags much at all anymore. There is a set of speakers (Kii Three or Three+) which piqued my interest, either the monitors themselves or the full combo.
  19. This is vaguely familiar. I may have started this back in 2020, but didn't get far. It's based on a Steven King story.
  20. Sonder by TesseracT (2018) https://album.link/i/1341084087 Example: Really found their sound in this one. The tracks come on hard, and you are rewarded with multiple listenings (I think I am one my 5th round). Looking forward to the recent releases. and THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY by Taylor Swift (2024) Example: Yes the 2 hour version. It is a good collection of songs. Not a complex album, but it is all focused on lyrics. And there are lines that hit hard. As I have said before, I am not the audience for this, but I completely get it. The fans are richly rewarded by pulling apart the lyrics. And there are catchy hooks in there. And 31 tracks - crazy amount of work.
  21. I use to play this game a long time ago when I read all the audio mags.. I think if I listen now it would be a bunch of old equipment. But I may ponder and contribute. 'cause you know that this is a serious forum, wish serious peoples. -- I have not seen it, but I hear you have a big bass trap...
  22. Have you seen me lately? I'm my own room treatment!
  23. I try and try to make this forum a more serious place, and all you people do is mock me!
