What are you listening to Part the Third

Totally digging on the Eastern European (WTF, auto predict, you’d rather suggest Eurovision before European? Fuck you. Just fuck you.) folk vibe of Ben Caplan.

Isn't that thing 1/1 and in terrible shape? Someone on here (Voltskool?) had a look at it and the woofer is blown and not easily replaced. I forget the specifics. It's more an objet d'art than a working subwoofer at this point. If I were gonna drop five digits on Moth gear, I'd get a nice tube space heater or six. Maybe one of the five Xanas or other exotic (as if all Moths aren't exotic.)

    The ambient/IDM thread.

I downloaded and listened this afternoon while I did work around the house. A few things: It's two 1 hour mixes. Being a DJ, I'd have preferred individual tracks, but I'll take what I can get. The actual release is a pair of .wav files. Apparently Ae haven't heard of FLACs. Fortunately it's trivial to convert them and add tags + artwork. Being me, I cropped the massive image that was in the zip file to a square an embedded it in the FLACs: As for the music itself ...ayep, that's some late 80s/early 90s rave. It's decidedly weird by the standards of the genre and still recognizable as Autechre. There were parts of both mixes I quite enjoyed and a not insubstantial number of parts I could do without. I do love me some golden era UK rave sound, but I pretty particular in my tastes. There is some fantastic Ae analogue synthesis going on at times.

I got a WeTr link from the Autechre site, probably the same one. Thanks for the heads up

If you go back to their earliest albums, they appear to have started life as a power pop outfit. I’m enjoying all four of their releases.

I was listening to music from my 2011 MacBook (from my Alessandro MS-1 out of the headphone jack) – I turned the volume up one click (to 4 out of 16) on a short pop music track and it nearly fried my ears (ow ow ow). Don't underestimate the volume level coming out of modern pop music – going to give my ears a headphone break until tomorrow. 😖 I think I'll turn the iTunes volume down to 1/2 to reduce loudness with headphones from now on. There are some huge jumps between volume levels on the Grados. I was lulled into complacency after I listened to Glenn Gould's Goldberg Variations (Zenph).

After living with one for a week, I would say the Sony OLED beats out the equivalent LG in every way but the operating system. Android is such a clunky piece of shit for a TV...or phone. 🙂 The weird speakers built into the A9F are excellent for TV speakers.

https://www.factmag.com/2019/06/24/autechre-warp-tapes-89-93-for-free/ Oh snap. '89-93 is the era when Ae made music that I actually liked. Well, to be fair, they did decent stuff through 1995. In any case, that's some prime vintage material they're giving away. For some reason, the Fact mag link is giving me trouble, so I had to go here: https://www.residentadvisor.net/news/43993 File is 1.1 GB on Wet Trans Fur.

    Post what you're watching

I saw this when it came out a while ago and still remember it well. I liked the darkness and the “true detective”-like mood. But much darker and sometimes just down right odd. Specially that scene on the video above. : - )

    Watches

Been to my local watch repairer to try thinner spring bars with those end links, and the alligator strap didn’t even come close to fitting, he then removed those end links and tried just the thinner spring bars and the strap was still catching on the watch leaving a mark, so I had him put the bracelet back on. Like Sam said the Rolex bracelet is comfortable so it won’t be coming off anymore. As I’ve previously mentioned, I am eventually getting a Cellini Rhodium dial, and when the time comes I’ll have that alligator strap fitted.

    Post what you're watching

Okay, now mid-way through Too Old To Die Young (Prime). THIS IS SOMETHING SPECIAL. Is it meandering, indulgent, and too violent? Yep. Can I sell it to you as great? I'm still not sure. But if you can put up with its vices, do the practically exhausting work to meet halfway, and float on its language and tension, it's an exciting ride to watch an artist create (and only one will take you here). Like movies (which each of these 60-90 minute structured episodes pretty much are), television is such a collaborative medium, it's exciting to see an actual personality surface. Many critics have issues with this series. I don't blame them. I also don't think there are many television achievements this grand, even in this new golden age we're in. It's pretty dark though. Be prepared.
