  1. So my son comes home one day from school and says he played guitar and everyone thought he sounded good and he really liked playing. Seeing as this is the first time he has shown serious interest in playing music I started looking around at trying to find him a cheap starter guitar. Step one was Guitar Center to see if he needed a 3/4, 7/8, or full size guitar, and there was a Yamaha F335 he liked. He then saw it in black and got that down and we knew that was the one for him, but we were just looking that day. While we were there, Zoë was helping us hold guitars while he handled them and others helped us out by playing so we could hear the tone potential. Well, turns out that she is interested in guitar now as well. Fast forward a few weeks and after checking CL and the internet, the right deal was found, but it was sold before it could be picked up (the next day.) Saturday, a friend who plays and knows some shops around town picked me up and we went on a search. A couple individuals and a couple shops later, we wind up back at Guitar Center, where I had been emailing someone the night before about some clearance inventory I found online. Turns out the guy who came up to help us was the guy behind the emails, so he already knew what we were looking at. Turns out there were two black F335s in inventory, and we handpicked one of those. Then, knowing Zoë was interested and I was interested as well, we looked at the deal we talked about over email. There was one on the wall that I didn't love compared to a step-below-but-more-expensive model. The guy checked the back and found one in the box. Tuned that up and started playing and the difference was noticeable. It easily eclipsed the more expensive model and the other example... So for Zoë and me, a Yamaha FG710S. The pix don't do the wood justice, as it looks pretty nice for an entry level guitar. Going to look at Justin Guitar mostly, but an old friend gives lessons as well, so going to get with him soon too. Excited to get them playing something they picked. **BRENT**

  3. Decided it was time for me to join the 21st century so I bought myself a carbon full suspension bike with carbon/aluminum wheels. I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up in the hospital by the end of the year, this bike just begs to be ridden at ludicrous speed on every downhill.

  12. Google Announce Project Fi http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/google-bursts-into-the-wireless-industry-with-project-fi/ http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/04/22/google_project_fi/ https://fi.google.com/about/ https://fi.google.com/about/faq You'll need a Nexus 6 Initially (or pay for in only 24 easy monthly payments) - so they're not pitching to iPhone users, yet and the pricing of $20 + (GB used * $10) may only seem cheap because of how expensive / data non-PAYG other plans are ... What usage patterns does this make sense for (in terms of TCO/coverage) , compared to say T-Mobiles $30/5GB plan ? But interesting to have a virtual / MVNO plan that allows roaming to provide extended coverage. Thoughts?

  18. Although I preferred the 38mm as a shape on my wrist, went back to a second fitting last weekend to check out the 42s display again. Getting old and crossed over to progressive (trifocals) not long ago so always thinking about near/intermediate/far viewing. Anyway, liked the increased font size on the 42 and can't modify my previous order, so I'm way back to June now. Everyone help work out all the bugs before, 'kay?

  19. Around home time at work today I get a call from a friend to tell me he saw a couple having sex on my car in the car park. I go down to investigate: my friend was correct. They appeared to be a homeless couple, and heavily intoxicated from sniffing tolulene. I thought I'd best be diplomatic. I told them I was leaving in the car in five minutes time, so they'd be better off finding somewhere else. The guy gave me a wink and told me he'd be finished in two minutes.

  22. I've been binging on Archive live concerts on YouTube, I think they've surpassed Anathema as my favourite of "that" kind of music, whatever "that" is. Example: Right now taking a detour for a London Grammar concert:

  24. I decided to start trying to play the guitar "again." In the past, I just looked up some chords/tabs and/or watched a video of how to play a simple song on youtube. I've decided to go through the justinguitar.com. I'm just at lesson 115 15 but already there were a couple of techniques that I didn't know about. Hopefully this will improve my playing enough to help me keep up with it. My fingers hurt.

  25. Went with that first board. It has a little bit of everything that good myrtle seems to offer - some flame, some curl and figure, and some striping. The finish will be a pore fill oil, which should really bring out the natural color and figure. Went with a Koa binding, and an abalone rosette with abalone fret markers. I went with a pair of luthiers from Oregon called covered bridge. Originally wanted mya-moe but the wait time is minimum 2 years. This should be maximum 12 weeks and getting heck of a value at $725 for a custom handcrafted uke using local Pacific Northwest wood.
