That looks good. I need to start trying recipes beyond my usual. My problem is Gail is such a picky eater. Smoking short ribs. Two hours in. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk7 points

Shaanxi Northern Chinese cuisine one block from our house in SF. Excellent food but hectic inside with no regard to personal space. Trade-offs.7 points

Open baffles do things box speakers don't. Of course they need extensive EQ, but one of the things you notice if you are used to box speakers is they can sound bass-shy. If you are used to open baffles, or electrostatics, of planar magnetics (Like Magnaplanar) there are no surpises. The bass is there in the right proportion to the rest of the music with no overhang, and sounds tight and fast. And open baffles interact with the room in a completely different way, exciting far fewer resonances. Well you can buy a kit, or even buy one already built. Or you can do what I did - buy two sheets of Baltic Birch and build them from scratch. Then hot hide glue veneer them, and French polish them. Parts which are not veneered I made from a Rosewood called Cocobolo, and the feet were made from Goncalo Alves.4 points

Yeah, OB sounds really great if you ask me - effortless, musical and big. You might get more dynamics and realism from large multiway horn systems, but i have yet to listen to a regular box based speaker i could live with. i haven't heard the LX521 myself, but that seems to be the best commercially available OB speaker i have seen. other stuff like the pure audio project speakers might look good, but having built many similar speakers before i refuse to believe they sound any good. all wide baffle OB speakers ignore off axis measurements for a good looking straight on measurement, and will always have problems with sounding good in a normal room.3 points

I experienced the same thing in mainland China awhile back. On the first day some guy was way, way up in my space on the train/public transport so I gave him a small shove and stared him down like a massive douche. After a couple days of more close encounters I realized they don't really have the same sense of personal space. To add to the thread, I went to Thomas Sweet in Georgetown3 points

Old wine in a new bottle - just finished casing mySS Dynalo today. Dual mono setup - one Antek 25va transformer and one 20VDC GoldenReference for each channel. Just over 14mA current on each output device (MPSWx6). First built this SS Dynalo back in 2014. Every time I took a break from my ES setup to listen to this amp I am amazed how much I like its sound. Wish I had the chance to listen to the top Focal headphones with this amp...3 points

Those ribs are going to be tasty, I'll bet. I think Gail would like those two dishes because they are not particularly challenging. I made the beef with less spice because Alden doesn't do spicy foods, and it was still tasty and we all liked it.2 points

A little too authentic at times. Other people's butts and clothing were perilously close to our food (let alone faces). All in all worth it anyway.2 points

yep, it kind of uses the same principles as the LX521, only 3-way, and i used a waveguide to match the forward dispersion of the ribbon to the midrange. the reason i chose the JA8008 was that it had nice and even dispersion all the way to 2500hz in a minimal baffle, so it could reach high enough to be crossed over steeply with the RAAL. i probably did sacrifice some controlled directivity past 70 degrees due to the side supports, but i built a prototype with and without, and they measured pretty similarly, and i couldn't really hear a difference, so i kept them. visually it was a big improvement i did try out a dampened u-baffle as well, but never could get it to measure like a cardioid, so went with an H-frame instead.2 points

Best thing to do with the Marantz sound-wise is sell them and use that money to buy a Stax SR-5NB or Gamma or something. You could probably even get some Lambda variant if you wait patiently enough. If they have sentimental value, it is what it is. Most of those Elegas/Napolexen look very similar to various Stax models. The NSA is clearly a SR-X clone. Those big, bulky cups in the early Elegas are probably taken from dynamic headphones they previously made. Superex made the same mistake and also corrected it in later models.1 point

My Numark did have its original paper receipt and the date was early 1974, also it seems it was sold for about $59.95 back in 1973 based off this copy of an advertisement so the dates do sort of match: https://books.google.com.au/books?id=GgkEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA58&lpg=PA58&dq=numark+es-701+headphones&source=bl&ots=zGAGhTDWYQ&sig=kaOZzaC6nYyZX266P4HHIaHxs0Y&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjmzYLU7KzSAhVJwbwKHX5fCC0Q6AEIRTAJ#v=onepage&q=numark es-701 headphones&f=false Have never seen any form of real life pictures of the SE-1000 just Pioneer ad pictures floating about online. The Napolex and Elega electrostatic headphones also are on my look out list. I missed out on a local ebay Elega CR-2074C last year which sold for $150'ish. Anything Elega and Napolex is extremely scarce and rare. The early Napolex units are possibly SR-3 - SR-5 clones drivers and baffle wise in construction but the design is slightly different. I have been on the hunt for the Toshiba electret which I've only seen Birgir own and posted pictures of here many moons ago. There is also the Technics EAH-80 that is quite interesting: http://20cheaddatebase.web.fc2.com/TECHNICS/EAH-80.html Elega http://20cheaddatebase.web.fc2.com/elega/CR-1070C.html http://20cheaddatebase.web.fc2.com/elega/CR-2072C.html http://20cheaddatebase.web.fc2.com/elega/CR-2074C.html Napolex http://20cheaddatebase.web.fc2.com/napolex/ES-100.html http://20cheaddatebase.web.fc2.com/napolex/EX-1.html http://20cheaddatebase.web.fc2.com/napolex/NSA-3.html There are possibly more other unique electret/electrostatic models floating about that never saw the light out of Japan as they are domestic models and its evident that most big Japanese brand manufacturers had some electret or electrostatic headphone in there product lineup. Designs and rebadged models can be traced to Elega, Stax, Pioneer and Audio Technica. Sony is about the only company that never did OEM copies of the former mentioned manufacturers, shame Sony today is not what it was back in the 1960-90's. The SE-1S and its matching EE-1 adapter? Fairly average sounding I'd put them just a bit below the SR-3N in terms of fidelity (resolution, soundstage, treble, mids, highs and bass), the comfort is quite shit though as the headband clamps fairly tightly to your noggin' if you have a big head.1 point

Looks good. Just a couple of safety thoughts. You should try to put the fuse holder with fuse back in. Also, I'm not sure if you've tied the chassis to earth, but you should do that too. Nice looking chassis. Enjoy1 point

Well, actually chicharrones are more like these thick pieces of bacon slices (panceta) fried until they're crusty and crunchy. Those things that Al is eating are just "cortezas" it's the skinny part of the chicharrón, fried until it gets foamy and crunchy.1 point

Was inspired by Naaman and Al, so just bought the same Chili Lime Chicharones.1 point

Apparently they've been closing a bunch of stores every year for years, and just closed the very first K mart store. Sad1 point

I think it'd be more likely and would still look good, if you got them laser etched. You'll probably have to pay an insane amount to get them milled. The setup and breakdown time for each part is going to be significant and that time is $$.1 point

Welp, I'll figure out what to do with them when I open them up.... They look almost identical to these http://www.head-fi.org/t/355709/k-mart-electrostatic-headphones K Mart needs to start selling electrostatic headphones again, it will definitely save them from bankruptcy1 point

This is a small project paying tribute to stax mafia. So I called it stacked mafia. I am going to build several amps in the same boxes. This is the first one. The Carbon with two boxes, GRHV, GRLV, 23 stepped VR. Planned by my friend and I and built by @ang728. Here are some pics. One GG is also done and more amps are in progess. photo credit to ang7281 point

Leg of lamb and cheesy cauliflower. I made a pan sauce with some of the wine from earlier too, but that took a few minutes more and I couldn't wait.1 point
