What a about a regulator after the 12V to bring it to 9V or so? You can probably get lower noise on a separate regulator than a built in one.1 point

I can't speak for the guy, nor for Apple's policies, but I'm let's say 99% sure that nothing shorted during the battery replacement. I did a pretty surgical work. I didn't use any metal tool to pull off the battery contact board or the battery itself, and the screwdrivers are magnetic, so the screws would stay attached to them and wouldn't fall accidentally on the board. Still something unnoticed could have happened. For what I found searching is that there's a batch of early iPhone 5's having some difference in a chip that would stop working when the unit is opened, and the symptoms are like that, the home and sleep buttons would stop working. Anyway, the SE is a nice device, same size yet faster and with a lot more of room to store music and pics. Today it's going to be the first day using it as the commute music source.1 point

I would get something in a $350 range with an i3 processor and 4GB of ram at the minimum. I own one of those newer Celeron and it is slow.1 point

Yup, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was one of the main influences of my life in my early 20s.1 point

RIP, Robert Pirsig. http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/04/24/525443040/-zen-and-the-art-of-motorcycle-maintenance-author-robert-m-pirsig-dies-at-88?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20170424 (Really liked that book, and should read it again sometime. It's been a long, long time.)1 point

Yeah, starting to have second thoughts as a couple interested people have already gone silent... but I am an optimist... And if there are any changes, pleeeeease keep the tube and transistor spacing the same - that said, I am good with the status quo.1 point

FYI, Gary Pimm's pages have been deleted for some time. Here is a link to the archived pages on The Wayback Machine. Unfortunately. the CCS measurement page did not make it. The other links work OK. http://web.archive.org/web/20151117131328/http://pimmlabs.com/ I had a few screen shots of Gary's CCS impedance measurements saved:1 point

I became a big fan of the Starz Original Series "Black Sails" which is loosely based on the characters from Treasure Island. Yup, pirates. But not Disney pirates. These guys had a lot of depth and you couldn't help but relate to even the worst of them. This show is produced by Michael Bay so there are plenty of big battles but what really sold me was the story and the characters. So I binged the final season 4 this week and I'm very sorry to think that there won't be more. The series starts a little slowly but I think it's excellent.1 point
