  1. Story of my life, and probably most DIYers... casework is the worst which 3d printer do you have? Here is version 1 of the hamster cage, needs a few more improvements before I'm willing to try to machine everything

  2. Wasn't worth the effort. But now that the cat left the bag, the thread in question is here (comparisons to the measurement I hotlinked on page 6), with a response from the manufacturer, and a response from the person who originally interpreted the hotlinked measurements as "good" here.

  4. If the glitch is audible or not (making the DAC being perceived as good or bad) , the measurements show the DAC’s Engineering as incomplete. Whether by choice, neglect, or incompetence is up for grabs.

  7. I really despise the default music app in iOS. It's a complete nightmare to operate while driving a stick shift. Any suggestions for 3rd party apps that have a clean UI?

  8. Very nice work bjarnetv. Just to add on to what Craig has correctly pointed out in regards to pin 1, and your query if it’s something that may be audible. In my opinion a correctly implemented (as per rane notes) balanced line is all about “potential”, in other words one scenario may differ greatly from another, influencing environmental factors are all very different. The only way to test whether a certain environment has audible RFI, would be to dissconect pin 1 from the chassis and listen for hum, in a quiet rural country area you may not hear any as opposed to a city area where RFI is obviously greater. And then there’s house hold wiring, appliances and fluorescent lights that all add to that “potential”.

  10. It is just that it can give rise to difficult to understand problems. Like a phone doing a cell search on maximum power, and suddenly zzt zzt zzt. The best papers I'f found on this are the Rane Notes http://www.rane.com/note151.html and http://www.rane.com/note110.html and http://www.rane.com/note166.html The nub of it is: connect each pin 1 to chassis ground as directly as possible in heavy gauge single strand wire - the goal being zero length. Even a very short direct connection inside the box is not ideal. Many professional amplifiers use a two terminal tagboard on the rear panel for + and - signal, and a screw terminal to the case. So pin 1 is grounded outside the case and shield current never penetrates the case. Pain in the ass for domestic gear where you want to disconnect it easily, but OK for permanently installed studio gear.

  12. I'm using a Monoprice/Duplicator D6 at home. For bigger and more detailed builds I can use objet and carbon from work. Having a 3d printer at home really helps with my procrastination problem. My builds always die during waiting for new parts.

  13. This one is a bummer for me and the kids. We have been watching Frasier since before we moved to Seattle and that show was an introduction to Seattle in the abstract for my kids. Sigh. Sent from my ONEPLUS A3000 using Tapatalk

  14. Yeah, me too. I've had an iPhone X and a pair of AirPods for all of a day, though, so I think that is my Apple allowance for a while. I love both of them.

  20. Keeping it on an i5 and 8GB is basically the best way to keep the price down. You can configure a new one with a 256GB SSD for only $50 more.

  21. Here's another good place for used/refurbed Macs. I bought a refurbished Mac Pro and a used iPad from these guys and have nothing but positive impressions from them (they also have a 20% off special going right now plus no sales tax). https://www.powermax.com/used/used-macs/

  22. For software development I would go with at least 8Gb RAM and a fusion or SSD drive. The 2014 models are significantly harder to upgrade either RAM or HD/SSD. I also would not go with the headaches associated with a Hackintosh. I like saving money but I hate wasting time more. Mac Sales (OWC) has nice refurbished/upgraded Macs.

  23. Is a hackintosh on the table? Best bang for buck I've found. I can still use osx without paying Apple prices. Doesn't work out of the box or as seamlessly as an actual apple product but saves a considerable amount of money. I am running one from 4 years ago and it still runs like a champ. The processor (i7 - 4770) is starting to show its age while encoding videos but more or less it is still quite good. I doubt I would get a significant boost for an insignificant increase in cost.

  25. Saw this and it reminded me of my favorite instrumental. So I looked it up on YouTube and and played many versions of "Sleepwalk" starting with Santos and Johnny live on American Bandstand. I forgot how much I enjoy that song. Guess I should get a recording of my own.

  27. Finished up a 6 channel Anaview AMS0100 to use with my horns, as the old amps were to noisy. A pretty plug and play build by DIY-standards, but since it was my first try that suited me just fine. Only had the time to plug it in and check the channel routing using test noises, so i haven't tried playing music on it yet, but hopefully everything will be ok when i try it out later today. I still have a Holton NXV500 to build, which is a bit more difficult, so having this as a warmup to get rid of my cabinet-drilling fright was perfect

  32. Stax mafia boards linked to in the stax mafia boards thread i highly recommend you doing a diy-t2 as your first amplifier. More than one person has done this. If you survive you will learn a lot less dangerous is the supersymmetry dynalo with the golden reference power supply then the current feedback amp balanced or single ended with the golden reference power supply more challenging is the uber2 amp

  33. So, this isn’t work for me. Booted with external power applied, then plugged the dongles into the monitor, then plugged the monitor into my MBP. I don’t get the FireWire light on the front of the MIO. If I then unplug from the monitor and directly into my MBP, I get the FireWire light and it comes up fine. Now, if I remove the MIO from my MBP and plug it back into the monitor, still no FW light on the MIO. Now I rebooted my Mac and tried again with the MIO plugged into the monitor and I get the “Cannot Use Thunderbolt Accessory” warning in my Mac. I don’t get the FW light on during this message either. External power was applied for the entire sequence above.

  35. RIP to a family friend's son Jake. Not 100% sure of age, think early 30's. Parents are incredible folks who adopted two kids, both of whom had inherited mental issues from birth parent(s). Older daughter went through some deeply troubled times, drugs and sex. Now is more settled, back with parents, and single mom holding down a job but still a bit tenuous. Son was a sweet big lump of a kid in the years I knew and saw him. But also had issues as he got older, never finished High School, was barely holding down a landscaping job. Met this cunt of a woman who got him hooked on several drugs including heroin, and had a kid with him. Woman had I think 3 other kids taken away from her by the state, and spent some time in jail while married to Jake. The kids got kicked out of their low-income apartment due to rent non-payment, and his parents ended up getting legal custody of the child (who BTW has Cystic Fibrosis) while in their 60's. Apparently Jake and wife were driving, Jake asked to be dropped off as he didn't feel good and wanted to walk back in the fresh air. Hours later, having not found his way to where they were staying, wife calls police. Someone had found Jake just leaning over a fence, dead. Autopsy to come, but they think overdose given his history especially with her. So RIP to one of the victims who never got the help he needed, and became just another statistic. Fuck drugs, fuck mental illness, fuck the systems that don't help these people; and fuck the cunt who got him hooked and took him off even the lowest rung of the ladder.
