  1. Karen and I "Met the Fokkers" last night. Our son Andrew has been pretty serious with a wonderful young lady he met at college. The great news is that her family lives 2 towns over from us, so they can see each other easily outside of the school year. Amy is going for 8 weeks to special program in Kenya this Summer, and she and Andrew thought it would be great to have the parents meet. Simple dinner at Bertucci's, but it was very successful, we enjoyed the company and chat very much. It helps that the father works in IT like me, has a slightly similar sense of humor, and looks just a little bit like Peter in Family Guy ? It just felt very normal and pleasant, and the fact that it was the kids' idea made it even more special....

  2. Spent the day house cleaning to get ready for a couple of guests who will be participating in the pre-nationals fencing camp. Right now we are scheduled to be hosting a Brazilian, maybe an Italian, possibly some Red Army and Ute fencers. Everything is still up in the air right now with visas received then not received air reservations made then not made etc. Phase two cleaning starts next Friday with the outside and room by room work overs. Dinner is a concern for the Russian, Italian and Brazilian fencers but I have my default In-N-Out burger and BBQ tri tip locked and loaded. Don't want to cause an international incident now do we?

  3. Finished "Good Omens" on Amazon Prime. It was pretty much everything I wanted as a fan of the book. Michael Sheen and David Tennant are so good together.

  6. Looks like it will be very powerful (it's definitely very expensive). I'm glad they designed it with fewer thermal and power constraints. I hope they are working on making Metal more efficient, as there is still a bit of a performance gap between similar applications running DirectX vs. Metal (it would be a shame to run Windows 10 on this box). They will probably jump to PCIe 4.0 (or 5) as soon as possible... I'm wondering if Intel's Optane will work in the new Mac Pro. The lack of Nvidia support means they are going to lean hard on AMD to execute on Navi's performance potential in the short term.

  7. It is interesting to find a group of this style without "extreme" voices. I need to hear it a little more. I expect a voice from a demon in each riff, Habit?

  8. I read it as a teenager. Doing closet cleaning I rediscovered my collection of Moorcock books and comics.

  9. Can't wait to put my hands on one in person! Unfortunately, not really for my needs (at first look) but it should be popular with the video crowd. I'll probably order an i9 iMac this fall. Looks like Logic Pro X is gonna get a boost!

  11. You'd think men would have figured out the beauty industry drives women crazy and learn from their example – it amplifies, reinforces, and preys on their insecurities. Nearly finished this one: Hitch-22 by Christopher Hitchens

  12. Oh, baby! That looks soooooo good. I would buy that case in a heartbeat for my PC if it was sold separately. Display looks amazing too.

  14. I'm curious to see this. The old movie is pretty good, but not great. I've probably ready Catch-22 15 times at this point - usually what happens is I go looking for a quote, start reading, and realize I have read the whole thing again. If you haven't read it, I cannot recommend Something Happened enough.

  15. Good excuse to offload some old wine, and replenish with some fresh wine? Perhaps from Italy, Brazil (or thereabouts), etc.?

  19. 17-40L at 17mm, F/5, 1/60, ISO 100. 17-40L at 19mm, F/6.3, 1/180, ISO 50. Pure silliness at this point. I attatched my Nikon 75-150mm F/3.5 E to my IR-modified 5D and did a "macro" shot of a plant growing in my front yard. The lens was wide open and I shot in aperture priority mode (as one does with fully manual lenses most of the time.) I then processed the image in Photoshop ...twice. The first time I did some basic contrast adjustments. The second time I converted the photo to black & white using a high contrast filter then duotoned it with a quad tone. Then I did some further levels work (I can't really call it "correction" at this point.) Finally, I combined the two images at about a 25/75 ratio. Why? I dunno, it's just how the work flow went.

  20. The previous post was supposed to be longer, but I'm having some issue posting multiple images from Flickr to HC. Yes, the irony of that statement is not lost on me. The stream at the edge of my property. I spent considerable time framing this shot. 35mm F/2 at F/8, 1/60, ISO200. It's just a bunch of trees. Converted to black & white in Photoshop using a high contrast blue filter, then duotoned. I also tweaked the curves a bit and then cropped it to 5:4 (which has been my favorite aspect ratio for a decade now.) The vignetting is organic, and not done by a PS plugin. It's an artifact of how the EF 50mm F/1.4 USM transmits IR. F/8, 1/100 ISO 160. 17-40L at 17mm, F/7.1, 1/100, ISO50. 17-40L at 19mm, F/6.3, 1/80, ISO50. Moar later.

  21. Binge watched Catch-22 a few days ago. This was done by George Clooney, and while I didn't think it captured it quite the way I read it, I thought it did an admirable job with the material. Now I'm going to have to catch the 1970 movie; I've heard good things.

  22. So over the last month I've begun a slow return to photography, after 5+ years of near complete inactivity. I started with digging out my old camera gear, blowing the dust off and charging my batteries. Said batteries are all over a decade old at this point and very quickly it became clear they didn't have the moxie to keep my DSLRs happy. They could keep my ca. 2002 IR-modified PowerShot G2 running, however: Taken with a 17 year old, 4 megapixel point & shoot with a wide angle adapter that was meant for (SD) video. Slightly thereafter, I placed several orders to AMZN and got my IR-modified 5D up and running.. My initial adventure wasn't very far ...my side yard. I used my EF 50mm F/1.8, the vintage 1987 Mk I iteration (which is mechanically superior, but optically the same as the plastic "nifty fifty.") Converted to black & white with an blue filter and then duotoned in Photoshop. Taken with my EF 35mm F/2, which has a wonky AF motor but usually works on the 5D. Converted to black & white with a blue filter an duotoned in Photoshop. I pulled a tick off me shortly after taking this photo. Straight out of the camera. No edits at all.
