  2. I'd be hard pressed to think there's a huge difference between streaming services. I'm pretty happy with Tidal so far, ask me again when/if I start paying $20/mo for it. My office rig is good enough (I guess) that I can tell every time that Tidal switches to Normal from Hifi due to either random network issues or some other cause. So whatever is the final solution will certainly need to provide decent quality, I'm not going back to basic Pandora or You Tube for full time listening.

  3. Yeah, I can't really hear the difference either, especially through my Equators, which are my primary source of listening these days (best $300 I ever spent). That said, I still prefer knowing it's lossless over Spotify Premium, it's just a psychology thing to me -- if I think it's better, then it's better, innit? I kind of wish I could convince myself that "bits is bits", but I suspect whenever I finally get around to putting together any of my better systems (Gallo 3.1 or Dynaudio Special Twenty Fives or JMLab (Focal) whatevers I have), I will be able to hear the difference. But yeah, by all means, go with your own findings, they are the only ones that matter!

  4. Original BBC series is on Hulu and Prime. Some plot points in the books seem to have been worked out after this was made, but it is still fun.

  7. Thanks, Dusty. I suspect the 'reassurance' factor is playing a big role for many. My bias going in was actually to demand an enormous, obvious difference between the two to convince me to change. It's just not there.

  8. Because the old Tidal thread hasn't had a post in a long time and Nate's thread is more current and has had me thinking about moving on to something else besides Spotify... I spent about 3 hours tonight directly comparing Spotify Premium and Tidal HiFi. Virtually zero difference in my chain. On a small number of tracks I detect slightly more precision in midrange (namely vocals) and bass (Spotify occasionally had more bloom and less balance)... but this was maybe 3-4 tracks out of 30+. I was all over the board on genre and compared Normal, HiFi, and Master levels of Tidal recordings. Made no difference. Not that my desktop rig is the end-all in resolution but I'd love to know what source gear would show significant improvements from Tidal's output. I'll keep the trial and go back a few more times but I guess I'm good standing pat.

  9. I managed to get my kgsshv project done without creating some big mess and spark, and I want to thank KG for his design , Birgir and many member here for their generous contributions. oyaide L/i50 OFC is used as umbilical cords but is not shown here. later on a L/R balance control will be installed. The power and the amplifying section is about the same size so they can be stacked together. The heat sink size is less than ideal and it runs so hot that I can barely touch. My IR thermometer reads 47 oc but I think it is inaccurate due to the shiny appearance of the heatsink. But then I think at least these heat sinks are bigger than those on-board ones so this should not be a problem. Two stax plug are installed becoz I have dozens of them taken apart from stax extension cords. There are some small issues during startup. The power supply board had some sparking on the bias section becoz some paint is off and probably there are some small filament peeled off from the leg of the 1n4007. It needs some epoxy to cover up the arcing spot. There is also something with the amp board. At first there is no sound, balance sits at 700v and two burnt 50k resistor on each board next to the stn9360. It turns out that I installed some mpsa06 instead. Luckily it fires up after replacement. The first second it plays it blows 717 away. Big soundstage , great dynamic and details. Pretty much no complain and is hard to beat except that vocal can be more engaging. Drives omega, es1a and 007 equally well. I think it somehow sounds sweeter than the carbon I built long thime ago.

  14. The difference between 5H and 6H almost certainly won't be noticed. You can add a 90R resistor in series if you need to make up for the voltage drop, but again, it is difficult to imagine that making much difference. The J is probably an upgrade, so all things equal, I'd use that one.

  16. Ok, I have a line on a Diedrich 12.5 KG roaster, so now it's time to get serious. Who would be interested in signing up for 3, 6 or 12 months of coffee from me? 2 pounds a month, $30 a month local or $40 a month shipped? I'd pick 2 varieties a month. I'm trying to see if it would make sense to try this. I need to hit the equivalent of about 80 yearly subscriptions to make it worth investing in the roaster. Edit: Ok, that was amazingly unclear. $90 for 3 months face to face, $120 shipped. $165 for 6 months face to face, $225 shipped, and $300 for a year, or $420 shipped.

  18. Power supply is back. Replaced a number of FQPF8N80C, 30V zeners, 15R power resistors, one 2sa1486 and one 2k resistor. What actually killed the power supple (except the guy that should be feeding ducks) has to be investigated…

  21. Very nice, Aura! Enjoy... I've now had the opportunity to enjoy each of the four Levercraft offerings several times. Very cool to have a TX roaster on the menu. Overall, I appreciate that they do not over roast their beans. The coffees I prefer (I'm a french press and pour over/Chemex type...Chemex new the last few months) are lighter to medium roasts...that's where the beans find the sweet spot. It's the roasters that get this that I'm inclined to prefer and buy from. My favorite by far is the Yemeni. It is pricey, but it really is special. Only beans I have enjoyed more are those select Ethiopians with all heavy blueberry notes. Then I'm split between the Kenyan and Ethiopian beans. Both very nice and approachable. The notes they suggest I mostly pickup which I find satisfying for some reason. Finally, the Burundi. It's a good coffee. It's just not one of my favorites due to the earthiness...what they refer to as cinnamon I believe. Overall, great find. Thanks, @grawk HS

  22. I tried using Roon but it was never an easy proposition and I think k that is why I gradually shifted over to Tidal. I also tried to get Roon to run on my NAS ()which is pretty capable) but it is not reliable. Because of the above comments I am going to try Qobuz as an addition to Tidal.

  23. Today has been a nice and interesting day. I finished a mini T2 with active battery. The copper color board on right side in picture in previous post. Late afternoon I were ready for the first power on. One DMM to measure one side verses ground and another to measure the other side. High voltage clicked in – no explosion – on side showed a few volts verses ground while the other almost 400 volt verses ground. It took some time for me to realize that the 400 volt reading in fact was the BIAS. I’m getting to old for this. When I found the right measuring points I had very nice readings. Batteries are always interesting. Readings as follow. Left +194V and -443V, right +196and –443V. So they also seem to be alright. (using 640V instead of original 740V) Connecting headphone. Very noticeable hum but the music sounded good. After a while very annoying noise came. The noise almost disappeared when I approached the trimmer with the screwdriver but came back when I pulled back my hand. Turned power off and changed the small tubes, power up again, lower my guard and went for a cup of coffee and… it all exploded… So tomorrow I have to fix the power supply for the second time within a week. On amplifier board visible; burned traces, resistors and one popped transistor. Maybe I should feed ducks.
