  6. Speaking of Walkman,.. I've started watching The Crown season 4 and a scene with Dianna in Buckingham Palace rollerskating listening to her Walkman really brought back some personal memories of those times. My ex-wife Gael worked at a coffeehouse and she'd skate with Elvis Costello on her Walkman in the parking lot after closing. She too was achingly beautiful and it was a pleasure to just stand there and watch!

  7. Lately the left channel humming has increased to become even more bloody annoying. But… today I cured it (pure luck - trial and error approach). I have two umbilicals between psu and amplifier. Both carrying 580V bias and then joining at the stax connector. So, I removed left 580V bias wire in amplifier and the hum disappeared. To my ears the amplifier is now dead silent.

  12. The 009BK was always the TOTL unit so they might just be moving to that direction. For me they were always the best 009's by a mile too

  21. First impressions of linear power supply for the GL MkII: Compared to the stock switcher the LPS removes any edge or sibilance from the highs and makes the sound smoother, less grainy, and more effortless. The stock Glite was terrific with the HD650 but was a bit edgy with the Utopia, but with the LPS the Utopia now sounds much smoother. I think the Glite w/LPS and HD650 pairing is a stellar deal. The amp opens up the HD650's soundstage and improves its imaging, getting rid of the 3-blob effect. It also clears up congestion in the lower midrange and tightens up the bass. Just a very synergistic pairing if you like a more solid state presentation. With the Utopia, it's still a reasonably good pairing, but only if you have the LPS. Stock power supply sounds edgy and harsh, but with the LPS and a little bit of EQ to reign in the highs the Utopia sounds very nice. Open, clear, highly resolving, reasonably punchy, and with a good midrange tone. But with my chronic allergy to highs I still need EQ to make it sound natural. Overall I think the Glite with the LPS is worth $800 more than the stock amp is worth $500. The stock amp is great with the HD650 and other warmer cans while the upgraded amp is great period.

  22. Got the re-tipped Zu DL-103 back yesterday. Today I mounted the cartridge, set the tracking force, aligned the cartridge and set azimuth and VTA. The custom belt is due on Tuesday, so I'll check the sound then. My last pieces of wood for the new stand shipped today. should be here soon. It's all coming together.

  28. Ended up having a very scary day. So a week ago Friday I called my broker and said "I need to pay [big bills]. Pls move [four digit sum of money] to my main bank account." On this past Monday, I wrote some checks, totaling about 2/3 of what I deposited. Then I paid off a few more bills. I noticed that my bank account was still showing the amount pre-deposit, but these transactions sometimes take an extra day to clear. Also, I knew that the checks I wrote on Monday wouldn't be cashed for a day or two. Then I got kind of ill. I have chronic digestive problems, and they acted up big time mid-late week. I actually had a horrible day Friday, but still managed to do a radio show I'm quite proud of, but I digress... That meant I wasn't doing much business for most of the week. Today I went out and did some light grocery shopping. One of the locations I frequent refused my ATM card, but that's not unusual. I have one of the new chip-encrusted cards, which offer greater security by not fucking working at least half the time. I paid my bill with a credit card and got on with my day. At my final stop, once again attempted used my ATM card, for like $40 in food. The cheerful clerk said I aid "insufficient funds." I said "uh oh" and paid with the same credit card. I stopped at the ATM, and instead of (based on my back of the napkin math) having a positive balance in the low four digits, I had a negative balance well into the three digit range. Somewhere along the way, somebody fucked up big time. I'd say most likely me, and it probably is, but in general I'm far better than that at managing money and I don't usually make $2500+ errors. Of course I can't do a single fucking thing about this until business hours on Monday. In between now and then I can ruminate on issues like ...did the transfer no go through? How many checks did I bounce this week? Is my broker drunk on the job? It's a good thing I don't have any hair to tear out.
