  2. Getting 60-80fps in the city with a 2070S at 1440p, using the non-RTX ultra preset with DLSS on Quality setting. Pleasantly surprised by the performance considering the mixed impressions on it before release. 95% of the bugs I've encountered so far are visual in nature and haven't occurred during story missions. The only annoying one is when an enemy stops respecting the existence of matter and just shoots/hacks you through any amount of walls. Other than that they don't detract from my enjoyment of the game. I'm 21 hours in and just finished up the prologue to get access to the rest of the city and way more side quests. Next session, I'm gonna find some unfortunate gangoons to test out my shiny new mantis blades on.

  4. Exactly correct. I would just rather use my time futzing around listening to music, rather than futzing around getting ready to listen to music.

  6. It makes the bits sound sweeter: https://www.hifiplus.com/articles/english-electric-8switch-streaming-audio-network-switch/ I think I'd save my money for a 10 Gigabit switch instead.

  8. Quote: “I’ve been using over-ear headphones daily for around 16 years now, and every single pair I’ve used have come with a case that covers their entirety.” Yeah? Do you carry the box around? What shitty headphones are you buying?

  9. Worked a holiday event this morning and holiday music is now lodged in my brain so might as well begin the sentimental (in the best sense) outpouring. Starting with Tracey Thorn's Tinsel and Lights...

  10. The visuals in this game are just mind boggling. A few screenshots from the 4k Ray Tracing-Ultra preset I'm playing on. I'm getting like 50fps but it is hard to turn anything down, particularly the ray tracing. The difference is so dramatic that I think I'll just take the pain and play below 60hz. This is the best ray tracing showcase on PC right now, full stop.

  12. It's really nice having the Colossus back home. It's like one of my children. I loved the time I spent designing and building her, and my collaboration with Marc. I definitely couldn't have completed the project without him. And again, a big shout out to Naaman for reuniting me with Colossus!

  13. Western Electric 46-A theater amplifier in 707-A Control Rack. Collecting WE theater gear is as expensive as this hobby gets. BTW, I have files on WE data. If anyone is interested I'll upload it and make it available.

  14. I feel for folks playing it on last-gen consoles and having a bad time, but on my 2080 it’s going great. Brent has a saying for this...

  15. If I recall correctly, they are Molex Eurostyle Terminal Blocks UL certified for 300VAC, which would mean 425V DC peak. I'm not sure if there are terminal blocks rated for 600V with a 5.08mm pitch. Since I'm using the amplifier boards with a ground plane, i used a couple of layers of Kapton tape at the bottom of the terminals and used very little solder in order to avoid the arching that's been reported with these boards. Edit: I just realized that the terminal blocks aren't the Molex that I thought I had installed. I guess I should replace them, which is not going to be easy 😕 Mouser has some phoenix 5.08mm pitch terminals rated for 400V. What would be a good alternative to the screw terminals? I'm not their biggest fan either.

  17. 10K pot on that amp, even with the JFET input, is fine. With JFET, yes you could go higher, though I would never use 100K. As for bypassing the pot, I would just jumper it and leave it alone. No need for the 10K resistors in place of the pot.

  18. All good advice. I myself opted to buy a platter, tonearm and motor, then build everything else from scratch. But the OP has already purchased a table.

  21. It's fun watching people freak out about the price..... Having said that the biggest question I have is the case. Other than it immediately putting the phones in low power mode it seems entirely pointless. Doesn't really provide that much protection and leaves the mesh headband (possibly the least durable part) entirely exposed? Then again I'm not exactly the target market here, this is for the Beats crowd who want a purse/bra shaped case to carry around.

  24. Looks like head tracking and active DSP correction with a mic to measure internal reflections. Plus a bunch of other tech stuff. The standout part to me is that Tyll was right in predicting the direction in which these sorts of headphones were going to go years ago.

  28. So, here is the other side of the wall behind the TV - putting a receiver in a garage is either genius or the worst idea ever. I got a nice cover for it to attempt to keep it somewhat clean, but time will tell. Got the wiring as tidy as I could. with eARC I don’t think I really will need a remote. I am using two wires from an Ethernet run for a 12v trigger to switch over subs to HT duty and could use another pair to run an IR blaster if needed. there is a plate that can be installed on the Arlington box but I am not sure how I would get the wires out. I do imagine this will be a good source of A/C leaks during the summer time but not sure what I can do to make it any better than what I have. ... plus there is room for a garage turntable!

  29. It's finished! Colossus is back in action, and better than ever. I certainly spent more time tweaking this time around. I think it paid off. I have the Hudson HI-FI Bigfeet between the stand base and top, then new isolation feet on the Colossus and I added more shot inside the plinth. It's sounding really full with great bass. Lots more listening to do!

  30. Nice job Marc! I'm now done with my latest project. Building two turntable stands back to back, I learned a few things. One, was that I'd like a second shelf above the record storage shelf, accomplished. Two, is that I'd like some kind of stop to keep the records from pushing in too far on the shelf, accomplished. I used Amber shellac on the base to try to get that golden tone of the Burled Maple top of the Colossus. Worked well, and it also provides a complimentary warm tone next to the Cherry of the Parasound tower and speakers. I also like the dark top with the Colossus.
