  1. Annual right of Xmas - sugar cookie day. I made the dough yesterday so it'd be easier today.

  4. We also watched "The Queen's Gambit" last weekend. But, we had the strange experience of watching the final episode first, by accident. The manner in which the final episode opens, I (mistakenly) figured the whole season was told through flashbacks. By the time we realized what was going on, we just finished it. Then we went back and watched the rest of the season from the beginning. Knowing the final outcome took nothing away from watching Beth's journey from the start. In fact, it may have engaged us more by giving us the money-shot up front. Either way, as others have already said: it's a great watch. And if Anya Taylor-Joy wasn't already a star, this solidifies it.

  5. I think Colin still has my Tape Head Repro tube output that I assume could be used with the Revox.

  8. I am/was the moderator for the Tape Project forum and I have a modified Technics RS1500 with a custom tube output that replaces the 70's era solid state amp. I use that for listening to a collection of about 400 reel to reel tapes. I also have an Ampex ATR700 which is one of the last machines that Ampex sold. It was a collaboration between Ampex and Teac. I have a couple of head-blocks for the Ampex and I did some experimenting with the mono/full track head set processing tracks similar to what you're planning. The results were mixed, but in the long run, I ended up using tape machine plugins. I admit that my mixing chops weren't nearly what they should have been to make an honest assessment of the process but reel to reel tape is not the cheapest or quickest media to deal with and I'm pretty happy with the subtle results I get with the plugins I use. After running the Tape Project forum, I did get practiced at teaching and guiding other folks on the care and feeding of reel to reel tape machines. I wrote a guide which (although many links to pictures are now dead) still exists and may help you getting your Revox running. I'm a huge fan of these machines so I'd be happy to give you any advice you might need. Just PM me! Here's a link to the forum. The Beginners Guide is located at the top of the General Discussion page. https://forum.tapeproject.com/ Here's a pic of my listening machine.

  9. With the complex design you chose for your first big project, I'd say you did pretty well. I would cut the trim long, then put it against the actual box to mark the angles in place. But that's just experience. That comes naturally. What doesn't come natural is the eye for design and the ability to turn that design into an actual object. You seem to have that in spades. Most would have built an easy square box. Kudos! As for putty to match the Purple Heart, simply make some Purple Heart sawdust, mix with wood glue into a thick paste and putty all gaps before it dries. Over putty, then sand level after dry.

  10. That entire setup is otherworldly cool. I would be jealous if anyone else had it, but I like you so much it just makes me happy to think of you enjoying what is almost certainly the best source gear available to man.

  15. That attaches it to the track without any play, but when angled the whole thing wants to fall over/twist the track unless you add a contraption like Doug showed.

  16. My Makita track saw has a simple little anti-tip device when doing bevel cuts that works pretty well. Certainly works well enough for me.

  19. Well, unless I find some way to make some Purple Heart wood filler for my screw-ups, I think I am about sanded 80-120-180-220 and ready to wipe on some of this Arm-R-Seal stuff. Need better attention to detail, a better way to estimate angles for the trim and probably to do more accurate 45 cuts as the track saw likes to lean. Trying to force the floor and four sides together on dominoes was not a perfect experience either, I need an apprentice. I also need to write less on the wood, pain to get it all off. Good enough for mid-century modern dog toys I guess.

  21. Thirded for Arm R Seal. That's what I used on the Colossus, as well as many other projects. I like to use foam brushes to apply. Put your brush inside a ziplock bag between coats.

  29. It's been a nasty weekend, weather-wise. Perfect for staying in and doing stupid things with lasers. I needed an image to test out dithering and came up with this:

  30. Agreed, coming from a lot of work-related laser work, there's a personal arm/de-arm sequence and there will be an enclosure before anyone else is even in the garage with me. I trust myself, but no one else. Also need an enclosure for fumes anyways.

  31. It is the Incra. I think it is like the old saying about democracy, that it's the worst fence available, except for all the others. It can be finicky and difficult to get calibrated, but it allows for doing things that are otherwise impossible. Traditionally, woodworkers don't really measure which makes it anathema to many people as it is purely about working to measurements. But it does suit the way I work, and I'd be lost without it. I did try to have a router table built into my saw table for a while. I tried using the same Incra fence for both, which was a bust. Then I found that the auxiliary router table fence was constantly in the way of the saw, so I removed that for the previously mentioned sliding table (which I am more ambivalent about, but when it is useful, it is very useful). The one accessory I have found that is worth its weight in gold is the JessEm stock guide. also, for the record, we have a Nespresso. I'm not that picky

  32. You don't know Doug very well. He needs his cuts to be accurate to the micron. When Doug makes coffee in the morning (2:00 pm), he weighs the beans, grinds the beans, then weighs the grind. If those numbers don't match, leave immediately because it's going to be a bad day. Seriously though, Doug makes some of the most precise joints I've ever encountered. And the fence he has is the most accurate and adjustable tool you'll find. I would absolutely have one if I had a shop size table saw.

  33. Don't worry, you'll have to take it apart again when you replace that fence. And again when you add the sliding table.

  35. The curl only kind of shows up in this pic, but it is the best one I have. This is not, actually, ambrosia - it is from a tree that was tapped for syrup. It leaves the same streaking, but with larger holes (which I cut off). This was wood from the $2/bf scrap heap - same wood I made the kitchen counters from.

  36. RIP K.T. Osline. She was a force in country music in the 80's, and the first woman to win song of the year with her hit '80's Ladies'. She was battling Parkinson's when she contracted Covid 19.
