  1. Yup, sure can. I don't speak for anyone other than myself when I say I could not care less about your personal headphone journey. This website does not exist to make you feel good. Members here are free to respond (or not, as is the case here) to your review. You bumping your own thread looking for gratification is not something that I'm forced to tolerate as a moderator here. So either take my friend Todd's advice above and realize that you've basically been treated with kid gloves so far or don't and you'll find you no longer have to worry about it. Last piece of advice - imagine you just walked into a bar that you've never been to before and started shouting about how great Bud Lite is and expected people to cheer. Would that seem like a normal thing to do?

  2. Cutting has definitely been an uphill battle with a diode laser in my experience. I have not been paying attention to what rig you are running so I may be in a totally different court. Also Lightburn was worth every penny for laser work. $40 is nothing compared to some of the other CAD/CAM programs out there. Those cutouts look heckin dope! ....if you wouldn't mind sharing the vectors..... I've been doing Arrow of Light plaques for the local cub scout troop. I won't share the finished project because I feel weird sending out names of children but the arrow was cut out with the router then the words cut in with the laser. Arrow was then filled in with yellow paint and the whole thing was stained and varnished.

  3. I've been screwing around with the laser lately, mostly trying to figure out how to get the damn thing to cut and engrave. I'd had the engraving part sorted for a while and finally had a break though today with cutting. For the inaugural project I decided to do something that popped into my head while listening to RTJ the other day. It'll end up being a thank-you gift for the friend that introduced them to me back in the spring. Each of those is about 2-1/2" long and the source file was custom designed by me in CAD based off of the cover of RTJ4. It's mirrored 🤦‍♂️ because the album art I used was, so I'll flip it for V2, add a small hole for a hanger, and viola, one of a kind custom RTJ Christmas ornaments.

  6. Relax and chill..... It's usually best to browse a forum when you join, to get a good feel for things. We are WAY more than a headphone site, indeed to the point above that we're NOT really a headphone site at this point. This is an eclectic group of great people that have many interests and personalities. We don't need lessons in forum and hobby lifecycles, coming in here and preaching that will not endear you, especially with the passive-aggressive "You can do whatever you want though" conclusion. If you truly want to find out about headphones, there are other sites that will fit your needs better. If you want to talk about other things - woodworking, watches, alcohol, bikes, movies/TV shows, DIY, and yes occasionally headphones/amps, etc. etc. - this will be a welcome place, and likely a nice respite from some of the other forums. But you can do whatever you want though.....

  7. Can't agree more Steve. I chased accuracy and a flat response for many years, only to get very close and realize that I did not enjoy the system much at all. Flavor is just fine if it's the right flavor.

  8. This guy has the same era/model Aries that I have. From this picture at least, he's done the same thing I have and discarded the extra pulley weight/flywheel on the motor and the record weight/clamp. I find the sound is more open and lively without a clamp. It's possible that the frequency graphs are a little flatter (fewer high mid spikes?) but my main speaker system is for pure pleasure and accuracy be damned. Plus, my Home Studio rig is the one that needs to be flat.

  9. I thought my comment was pretty benign, Gene. This isn't really a headphone forum. Most members have been here more than a decade, date back to the earliest days of Headwize, and are friends in real life, despite the thousands of miles, oceans, continents and everything else in between. Are we occasionally rude? Yes. Were we particularly rude here? No. If you'd read around a bit even just in this forum you'd have seen that the top 10 threads are so are either Stax related or about boutique niche headphones. So no, you posting a review of your new AKG K240s was unlikely to generate any sort of stimulating conversation. Most here have probably already owned a pair. Congrats on your new headphones. My advice, spend more time listening to them then writing about them. As the saying goes, sorry about your thin skin.

  14. I built my KSA-5 clone back in 2013 (see my post dated August 9, 2013 in this thread on page 8) but was never quite satisfied with it. I made every effort to make it look good and perform well, and it was well within the original KSA-5's specs. Yet, although it worked well with my 32ohm Grado headphones, it could not compete, in my subjective opinion, with Musical Fidelity's X-CANv8. Connected to a pair of 8ohm speakers, the clone would become rather confused with anything but simplest music. Because of this, the amplifier fell into disuse and was gathering dust on my rack. Until this weekend. This weekend, I finally got around to make KSA-5 work for me. I kept the overall topology and the PCB, only changing some passive parts. The results are quite remarkable: The original KSA-5 was rated for 5W into 8ohm with THD<0.5%. Before modification, my clone gave 5W into 8ohm with THD @1kHz of 0.18%, well within the specs. The revised clone delivers 5W into 8ohm with 0.0015% THD, an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude. The original KSA-5 was advertised to deliver THD<0.03% into 100ohm load, although the brochure did not give the signal level for this performance. Assuming the same output voltage as for 5W into 8ohm, about 6.3Vrms @ 1kHz, my unmodified clone demonstrated THD of 0.02%, again within the specs. The revised clone drives a 100ohm load to the same level with 0.0017% THD, an improvement of more than an order of magnitude. The modified channel sounds very well, clear and transparent. I still need to complete the second channel and do some real listening. I will post the revised schematic with some explanations, as well as additional measurements, in this thread.

  19. Hi Timb5881, I find that these headphones care more about your source material than they do the genre at hand. Meaning, I've heard many genres through these venerable masters, and all they do is reveal. Bad recording/source file/master etc, bad performance. But great mixes/masters are amazing reproduced on my SR-Sigma's. I can't speak for the others on this forum, as some have modded to the 404 drivers and have even better sound (which I can't even fathom right now because I love these already as is). Revealing as they are, I tend to use these only on masters I know are great and my own timeline edits (These are great editing headphones, earspeakers for purists, as they give me all the detail in the world to work with) so I can reveal any flaws in the mix. While technology has come a long way since, in some ways it hasn't. Think of the Sigma's as a large format camera. A 1950's 4X5 camera (Linhof Technica or equivalent) shooting a 50iso negative is going to demolish any digital camera in detail and texture and image quality, under $15,000-20,000. Only the latest megapixel beasts from Phase One, or Leica's S series will beat it or come close. Empyrean, Abyss, LCD4z's etc might have a slight edge, but you also have to pay the price tag. But arguments can be made for both camps. I reckon that the detail about the unique position of the drivers has a lot to say about the magic of the SR-Sigma's. So yes, short answer, it all sounds great. But then, I am listening from the angle of wanting to hear it all, flaws as well as the moments of genius.
