  1. i had general impressions of Utopia ready within an hour of receiving them but took the week to work through various material (still a lot to go). significant upgrade from Elex and Clear. there's a bigger gap from Clear to Utopia than Elex to Clear and i think it's because Utopia does things that Clear simply cannot HD600 comparison is apt, actually i think Utopia is more in-line with presentation of HD600/580 than Clear or Elear. there's a subtlety and smoothness to Utopia that is not in Clear, in hindsight i actually may be finding Clear a little wild now in it's presentation god-tier detail, imaging, bass, PRaT not bright. not to me. had some female vocals at time that i thought were slightly-off tonally and then went back to HD580 to compare and it was effectively identical the most unexpected thing is how easy they are to listen to. you'd think with this insane level of detail that it would be devoid of emotion or push you out of zen state... well i have the complete opposite experience. shocking ability for intimacy. so... yeah. this headphone concludes my adventure. there's nowhere else i care to go. TLDR Nums put it right.

  5. Thanks everybody for the birthday wishes. I sat in my sunshine and watched the first half of a cycling race that ended a week ago, and then had dinner out with Claire and my sisters in law, one of whose birthdays was last weekend. The côte de boeuf was huge and the Chateauneuf de Papes was tasty. Good day for sure.

  9. the other solution is to wear a pair of JH13 under the headphones that will solve the poor bass response as well as general crappy sound quality

  12. This is an amp built by Mirko, that tkam bought from someone on HF I presume. The right channel was flaky, and since the builder is in the EU, he asked me if I'd take a look at it. It is in a single 2U 400mm Modu Pesante case. This isn't the exact amp, but similar.

  14. A quick look at that GS thread,.. It sounds like a some folks are comparing recording an instrument like guitar with 2 mics (super common) with one mic on the neck and one on the body and stereo recording. In that case, matching really doesn't matter. You just move the mics around until you get what sounds best to you with those mics, instrument and room. grawk is right about using a stereo bar. It all depends on the kind of recording you going to make on what technique you employ. IMHO the best way to do a stereo recording of a room and avoid any of the typical headphone issues like you mentioned is M/S. You're working with 3 channels mixed down to stereo ( 1 mid with 2 sides). I guess you could use a bar with the mic's lined up back to back (instead of side by side) but if you have two boom stands, the one over the other (one upright and the other upside down pointed at each other) is what I've always done for M/S. If you plan on doing much recording, I think it's worth picking up Bobby Owsinski's book "The Recording Engineer's Handbook. It has examples that make great starting points for recording setups for most instruments and ensembles. Just add time and patient listening and you can make great recordings with very humble gear IMHO.

  15. Working on the Quads today, at my own favorite rental... refurbishment and placement in the coming week or two. Mr Bear came from St George, just got back from the 2.5day trip! Had a really good time, Back to "Realising" Hoping that everyone is great in spite of myself, and well, this room is finally coming along! 🙌 Things have been pretty good around here these passed few weeks.. looking at 32/5 channel realiser captures. I did a 39 channel Professional grade atmos cinema 2 and a half months ago after trying to get in since Thanksgiving! I am willing to share these Captures, with any HC'er interested with an A16 that will be appreciative! Andy used to have the A8, has he picked up his 16 already? I will do those yammer-Hammer NS1000' eventually in a close friend's large and well treated ManCave Studio [22 by 24Ft], switching between rooms on the fly IS a treat for mixed media, even most 2channel stuff.. Whenver I am home this is what I tend to use. The 2 Year old dried Pecan wood seen under-island goes 5 or 6 inches above the Teli! That is also Black Locust Live-Edge, and Box-Elder supporting the Quad and Yammies' NS1k. I hope you enjoy my few, 5 or 6 captures (rented Focal Solo6 monitors) through a Realiser one day... not that any captures will be shared from that less than-ideal room. ! You only equalize for the speakers at 90Deg off-the T.V But I am interested in sharing good A16 captures in many-channel with HeadCasers, Mostly... nobody on the other spot wanta to make any... Andy, we met in 2016, did you get your A16? I don't want a pm to seem offensive 4 years after that fact. After all this Time. Either- Any prirs I share that I've made, I would prefer remain private. Prirs are sensitive things, I also built and painted that paint-grade maple Costa-rica and topside-offpink beige a few months back for this room.

  16. it depends a lot on what you're recording, the sound of the room, and what works best for the mics in particular. For recording in a studio space, I don't think I'd use a stereo bar, I think I'd just experiment with where you place the mic stands... ORTF, DIN, XY, Spaced Omni...

  18. Agree that measuring an amplifier with a device in a store isn’t practical. Assuming the ultimate goal here is to find an amp that you like the sound the most, I would pick one or two good recordings that I am very familiar with, keeping the front end and headphone consistent and simply listen to the different amps at the volume you like and as consistent as you can sense and go back and forth as needed. Then go with the one you like the most overall. Make sure the front end and amps are properly warmed up when you do this.

  20. I doubt anyone selling a stax amp is going to let you Probe about with a meter in their showroom. Not many private sellers either. I'm pretty sure you can pull the d10 from the list. Not enough power. The d50 and 353x are new enough I haven't heard them. A used srm717 would drive about anything well. And if you didn't like it, it would be easy to resell. If you want it new,srm727.

  25. RIP, Elgin Baylor. I've always had a soft spot for those Baylor/West/Chamberlin Lakers squads. To go up against the Celtics year-after-year and lose again and again... that does something to a man. Poor Elgin retired just before they finally broke through in '72.
