Well the Tokyo Olympics will start this Friday and even though Lance is no longer fencing I thought I might share a piece with you explaining some of the basics of the sport should you consider watching the USA fencers in action. The video was shot at Lance's former fencing studio; the fencer Ysaora trained with and fenced Lance multiple times and Lance would occasionally beat her. At the 5 minute mark you will see our friend and Lance's coach Maurizio who Lance will be visiting in Italy next Month. Ysaora is France's number one foil fencer and projected to medal. As most other DIYers I use Teflon Stax connectors with a small PCB. But on below amplifier I use 3D printed connectors with female golden contacts from Neutrik 3 pole XLR. And they seem to work really well. On heat sinks are 4 groups of c4686/a1968/c4686.

I don't have a scaled down T2 PSU. The one I use is based on the original T2 PSU schematic. I am working on a golden reference version, but that project is not completed. Once upon a time, I did a golden reference version, but it was too fragile. In my new project, I will add current limiters in front of the regulators, like Kevin did in the T2 PSU.

I highly recommend Dusk too. I'd also suggest trying to avoid screenshots/videos because of how amazing some of the levels are and it could spoil the fun knowing just all what's coming. I wish this were the case but it pretty clearly is not. Nearly half the US Men's basketball team and a number of other athletes "who's vacation status is unknown" have been placed in health and safety protocols in the last few days alone. This is embarrassing. The vax should have been mandatory to be on the US team.

I think we're largely overstating the risks to the athletes but I get the perspective and this is coming from a self-admitted Debbie-downer related to COVID. 1. I didn't think international attendance was being offered for fans, just athletes? 2. I thought most/all athletes had to be vaccinated? Big assumption, I have not time to read news mostly.

You could always use something like the Pi2AES that SBAF seems to recommend.

Thanks guys. Yes, external PSU (T2 PSU with some addons). Maybe one can’t call it a Carbon since output stage is formed by NPN BJT - but else it’s similar. I think current is like 10mA. 300R emitter resistor and two LEDs in series. With +/-400V the heatsinks are “hand warm” and you can probably double the current.

I'm of two minds regarding the Tokyo Olympics. On the one hand, Japan has forked out the massive sums of money to build all the venues, Olympic villages etc. Only for it to be cancelled last year for obvious reasons. Cancelling for a second year would have given real financial problems. Part of the financial rationale for the 2012 games in London was conversion of the facilities to other uses after the games, and I would expect Tokyo to be the same. So the pressure to hold the games this year must have been very high. On the other hand, it is a Covid superspreader event just waiting to happen. Or clearly already happening.

I played Christopher Cross Sailing on the lake today for the new neighbors that bought a little sail boat and got stuck out in the middle for what seemed to be hours. I thought it was pretty funny, not sure they agreed.

Depends on the relative hardness of the plastic. With wood I use the same methodology as you and let compressive forces do their thing but have no experience with HDPE.

I bought kd lang and the reclines 'Angel with a Lariat' in 1987, when it came out. I then went back and bought the first album, and have bought every album since. To say I'm a fan would be a giant understatement. Hymns of the 49th parallel is one of my favorites to listen to. I discovered Chris Isaak two years earlier, and I buy every album he releases as well. Still two of my best discoveries.

I'm not sure what those things are but they are sure as shit not Megatron's. Looks more like a SRX with some version of the Megatron output stage... This is why Kevin and I try to expose these fuckers as they are literally running away with peoples money. On a similar note, I have another amp from JR Audio here now and well... stay put for another horror story. That thing lasted for a few days before the PSU blew up... a sloppy clone of one of my old PSU's BTW.

Initial testing on the balancer is looking good. I’ll need more testing to confirm, but the batteries are much closer than before. This should help to extend battery life.

Milled a second board today and after some struggling I eventually have a stereo opamp driver. Now I listen to this and this… Grüner Veltliner for my father-in-law... he was born in Austria.

Now completed mini T2 with the new boards version .23. Squeezed in film caps with 0.8 mm leads on right channel with 0.76 mm hole diameter, elevated and soldered both sides (see below). Both channels worked right away. Only issues I’ve found with those new boards are mentioned in posts above.

Today’s mini project. Timer 555 with a few other components. When IN (the empty pad just below left leg of the two color LED) is low then RED, if high then GREEN. Standby/On indicator.

As the good father I’m I gave my son my NAD M51 DAC. I think he needs decent equipment with balanced outputs. So now use this as my DAC. Sounds great!!! Don’t understand why I didn’t finished this long time ago… wife is very understanding…

Common mode rejection is critically dependent on resistor tolerance in a balanced amplifier like the OPA1632. I'd have to look it up but I think 0.1% resistors will mean a CMRR of -60dB. And at that level you need to make sure they thermally track too, and have very low voltage coefficient. All that hoohah with discrete component tolerance and CMRR is why THAT have adopted everything on a chip with laser trimmed resistors and bootstrapping to make the common mode impedance huge. The InGenius devices get to -90dB CMRR, the only real disadvantages are the pretty average SNR of -105dBu because the internal impedances are in the tens of k range and 5ppm distortion. That is where the OPA1632 with truly impressive low noise of 1.3nV/rootHz and ridiculously low harmonic distortion of 0.22ppm wins big time.

Thank you so much for all your advices. I've finally fixed the problem. The C2M1000170 and 10M90S on my board have gone bad for some reasons. I replaced C2M1000170 with a SCT3080KLGC11 from a local store, and luckily it worked. I parallel the 5R with one more 5R, and now the power supply is working perfectly. The amp has been running for at least 2 hours with no problem. I couldn't have fixed it without your help, Kevin, Blueman2, and Soren. Thanks again.

I had this issue with my Blue Hawaii. It was drawing more power than the GRHV was set to output. As I recall, I changed the 5R1 resistor (the large 3W one) to 2R5 or thereabouts and that solved the issue. I just soldered another 5R1 on top of the existing one and it worked fine. The 5R1 sets the amount of current that the PSU will supply.

Seeing that Felitsa audio is still alive and well on Ebay (fls.audio on eBay), below, you can find Paramesh's full PM, outlining his Stax "Support" experience with Thuan and fls.audio : my name is paramesh .. i see that you have a megatron ..got from tuan just wanted to ask you hows the amp doing ...? i am asking you cuase i have the megatron from him as well and it has an issue and i am bit stuck ..and not able to reach him .. any leads a can help oh my goodness !! sounds very similar saga !! thank you so much for replying sir !! greatful .. i been feeling badly stuck and alone with the amp after the guy turning his back on me after shelling out a lot of money .. atleast your message gives me some hope ... but i am glad atleast your amp is fine now !! i got the megatron from him after i saw his feedback which was great from lot of people till i got the amp ..he also send a lot of messages and images of testing the amp etc etc.. i got to know your megatron is the one before mine ..and i asked him whats the diff and he told me mines a SS rectifier..or something and rest is same . same tube stages of 2 QUADS of EL34 and a pair of 12au7 and 12ax7 and all internals .. i even got the amp picked up by a shipping company through air cargo so its handled well it arrived ..i plug the amp .runs for some time ,,say a track or two ( i was might impressed ) i bump up the volume ,... say halfway stage .. tragedy strikes .. minor flames erupt from under one the EL 34 ..i unplug the amp.. i check with him ...he says he's checked all and sent and suggest some issue in transit .. i even opened amp on his request and sent him images ..no solution he asks me to try the amp again .. it works but with half gain ..50% Of what it is ... say from 9 am on volume knob .. now i am listening at 3 pm .. which is strange !! but all FR is ok.. something gone wrong in the Pre amp stage is what i thought .. i been asked by him to check with a local repair chap !!! with a bad hand drawn schematic he sends me .. i get a local electronic guy check all internals .. he shows me a busted Zener diode in the circuit of one of the channels . everytime we replace the diode and again it burns then i carry the amp to another city to a respectable someone who worked on tube amps .. and he checked and said one of the EL34 has busted ...which is true,,, so after replacing the EL34 .. the zene diode stops blowing ..but the gain is still an issue .. the person checks all the stages of amp paths and says no faults .. but the issue of HALF GAIN is not sorted out ... I wrote hundreds of mails and messages only to be told ... i must find someone and debug the issue !!!! ( so did he send me a faulty amp ?!...fully aware of the issue ... i dont know ) its been over 3 months now .. and i have heard only 3 tracks ( sounded great ).. but now its lying aside hes stopped comminucating with me and is not available on headfi .. hes been black listed ...by someone .. do you see any probablities .. what could be the reason in my amp .. for sure i did not follow any of the steps as you mentioned in point 1 of your write up .. swicthed on off in intervals .. point 2 is what evidently same issue experienced by me .. can you guide me to someone who can help me on this or even consult on chargeable basis ..to help fix this ... i will be really greatful ! i am stuck thank you so much

You know, not many things upset me too much, which is why I suppose I've put up with this amp for 2 years; however, the IMMEDIATE and IDENTICAL reply I received from Thuan BOTH here on head-case (thuytn) AND on head-fi (tranhieu) to the above post does get under my skin: I've just seen your post on HC. Could you please remove my name from that post? It could heavily affect my future sales. Hopefully you could understand my situation. Cheers Thuan Wow, this fellow has guts. Hence, I will provide some helpful, clarifying details: 1. Thuan's amp was dead the week it arrived. It had eaten through it's first set of 6 under-sized 220uf 450V Nichicon power filtering caps, and blown the soldered fuses between the GZ34 rectifiers and the caps. The inrush current was virtually uncontrolled on startup. 2. Thuan provided ZERO support, and was completely unresponsive. 3. Thuan was using a different account for amp/T2 board and transistor sales on head-fi (kytuphicanh), which was scrubbed by head-fi moderators, who added the warning: Caution: Incomplete Sales Why? Good question. The next fortunate head-fi member to buy one of Thuan's Stax Megatrons was paramesh; Paramesh contacted me directly regarding my Megatron build, and we basically had the same experience: amp dead within a week, zero support or accountability. I have all the PM's. Hence, the head-fi moderators deleted Thuan's account, kytuphicanh. No worries, Thuan has several other accounts, (including thuytn, tranhieu, fls.audio on SBAF and tee8tee4388 on reddit, among many others, no doubt) 4. Thuan's Megatron contains no delayed-start or soft-start circuit of any kind, not even a thermistor for crying out loud. The power filtering caps blew repeatedly. 5. For additional clarity, please see pictures attached of Thuan's caps upon arrival, and within a WEEK of use. Notice any tops blown right off? This happened 4-5 times before a thermistor was installed, and then the power transformer died... 6. The main power transformer was described as (pictures of his winding rig are on SBAF): "Custom-wound Kawasaki 0.23mm Z9 core transformers". In reality, the mains power transformer is under-sized and is now dead. 7. Anyone on head-case who would like to further evaluate the quality of this fls.audio Felitsa Audio amp build is welcome to receive it at my expense via UPS Express, worldwide. It is a large, single-chassis build, and it is quite dead, yet again. Cheers, indeed!
