  1. It's been a while since I built something goofy just for the sake of building something goofy. This is a JFET buffer pushing a stepup transformer (LL1674) to a 71A parafeed output stage using some custom Lundahl parafeed outputs. Tubes are CCS loaded with CCS driven filament supplies and shunt regulated bias. HT PS is choke input with a small regulator before the CCSes. The driver PS is dual Jung regulators. Sounds lovely other than for the slight hum that eludes me. It's surely something stupid that I won't find without rewiring the whole thing.

  4. Finished up a Soekris dam1021 build. This is the new rev7 board with a lot of improvements trickling down from the flagship dac2541. HiFi2000 case, FPE panels, JLSounds I2SoverUSB v.III input, LT3045-based power supplies, direct R-2R output intended for my headphone amp, and buffered output for my powered desk speakers. My aesthetic stylings and DIY skills haven't advanced even the tiniest bit since 2010, but I like the brutal elegance and minimalist functionality. Most importantly, it sounds really nice.

  11. On a semi-serious note the inclusion of a 3x optical zoom lens on the Pro phones is actually interesting to be. I use the telephoto lens on my ancient XS Max all the dang time (just 2x) and more capability there coupled with the wide-angle side of things is great in my opinion. I'm edging closer to the idea that my phone really has replaced 99% of what I'd use a traditional SLR or mirrorless camera for but with kids and sports I keep creeping back towards the dark side...

  12. Was on the phone with Cartier for a warranty service (not mine: a watch of my mother’s). I was given a date. I looked at my watch, which has no date dial (GRUT): fuck you Hodnnkee date window weirdos. Phonecall made me want to change watches. Wrist check: goes great with my Birkenstocks and basketball shorts. Also no date wheel. The Casa Fagliano straps are so much better than anything else in the Richemont group (JLC and ALS have the same strap suppliers, but only JLC gets the Casa Fagliano, first or second hand: third hand anything goes) that it’s sorta crazy. And I normally have custom straps made. FYI. Wish I had one on this.

  13. A very pretty shot: 17.5 in 40 out in 32 seconds. Ethiopian anaerobic. Ground with the OG (I would go a little finer next time). Hoo boy this coffee is both delicious and really difficult.

  21. I would think the folks in Cupertino are pretty happy with today's ruling. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being disaster and 10 being maintain the status quo I'd say this is probably a 7 or 8 for Apple. I would think this means most apps are about to go free and require you to sign up for a subscription outside of Apple's payment system so as to dodge the Apple Tax. Good take:

  23. Kids today. You have no idea what it was like using Python 1.5 in the late 90s when even perl programmers looked down on you.

  24. I'm actually typing to you on a PC now, which I built in late 2013. It has a newer GPU (8GB RX 580, which was supposed to be a stop gap) but other than storage is unchanged in 8 years. It was my plan to build a new machine Real Soon Now but the GPU (and high end CPU) market continues to get worse, no better. Also Windows is a horrid OS for anything other than video games. I have neither the skills nor inclination to run Linux. That leaves MacOS. While I could write a book on what I dislike about Apple in the modern era, their computer OS is really the only option if I want to get shit done. I DJ on MacOS. I edit photos on MacOS. I hoard terabytes of data (mostly FLACs and photos) on MacOS. As I have mentioned before, I am an old man with freakishly large hands and increasingly bad eyesight. I don't use smartphones anymore than I have to. The way the younger generation is "connected" with their mobile devices, I am similarly with a laptop. Part of the Apple Tax(tm) is accepting that one is buying a multi thousand dollar device that is essentially disposable.

  27. No damage thankfully. It was funny though, Mary was on the phone talking to a friend who lives 24 miles away and announces the earthquake. The friend says "I don't feel anything" and three seconds later she feels her house shake.
