  3. Thanks all! Having a great day so far. Karen and I on vacation in Naples FL, beautiful weather. But even more exciting for this old man is that my nephew, married to my niece, has been selected as 1 of 10 new astronauts! Two year program, and he could be in space! Fan-fucking-tastic!!

  4. You can hear a younger Randy Crawford on this. If you listen very carefully you might be able to hear me in the audience (true story). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Life_(The_Crusaders_song)

  5. Building shop cabinets is kind of meta woodworking. We made a nearly 16' level base/toe kick and cut all of the parts for the cabinets, miter saw stand, and work surface at the back of the shop today. Laser leveled the base/toe kick that straddles the short remaining strip of the old slab and the new slab, so that all cabinets built on top will automatically be level (assuming they are squared up properly). The Sawstop with Jessem roller wheels (like the ones Jeff just bought) and two people was brilliant at breaking down and sizing the plywood. Cuts through it like buttah.

  8. Joni Michell was awarded a Kennedy Centre Honor yesterday. This is a seriously prestigious award (which bizarrely I had never heard of before) https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/kennedy-center-honors-lorne-michaels-joni-mitchell-1.6274668

  13. Because Fitz hasn't been around lately. 😁 In other shop news, my niece's husband is not an astronaut but he does build a nice bench with Veritas vices and other fixtures. He's also given me the hand tools and such on the temp shelves below on indefinite loan. With three Lie Nielsen planes and sharpening gear available, I guess I'll try shaping wood and honing tools by hand (Tice bait).

  14. I do not think this either fake or very old NoS woodpecker straight edge is going to blend in with the other tools on my woodpecker wall. I cannot even imagine how it got to be this color but this is the only one I could find locally to finish up the setup on the saw stop.

  23. I seem to love the meta hobby work - probably a bit too much. I have learned that about myself over the years and it’s something I can’t seem to undo..

  28. That is true. However, there's not a lot else you can do against a car this fast on the straights and with DRS as well. It's just eating you up, race by race, it does not matter that much how hard you can quality, which is extremely frustrating. It's not like Lewis didn't do things like that against Nico and vice versa - and they were teammates as well, so one would think that in that case, that is a lot less likely to happen (same situation may arrive from next year with a faster teammate, unless they've made some 'pre-agreements'...) Now we have this confrontation with drivers in different teams, who are also fully against each other on all fronts, on and off track.

  31. Cauliflower Dal Fry and some really, really ugly naan (I ignored my own advice and didn’t measure, and this is the result: and you can tell which one was on a baking steel and which was on a cordierite baking stone). But the Dal was divine; the cauliflower dissolved into it but the lentils still had texture. Pressure cookers are magic. I would have been very happy to get this from a decent takeout joint (other than the ugly naan, though it tasted good enough), which is my benchmark for Indian food at home. A very beige meal, though. Used my new Tanaka R2 gyuto for the first time. It’s a dreamboat. Only had to give it a slight microbevel on a Rika followed by a chrome strop. I sold my previous Tanaka R2. Not selling this one. These really should be at least twice the price (they aren’t cheap, but they are too cheap for what they are, and what they are is just… sort of perfect.) I wish the spine and choil edges were a bit more broken, but it’s sort of the house style, and neither is uncomfortable in use. But even at half this price point I expect more rounded tactile grip edges. I can round it myself, but then I would have to re-etch, and I just don’t feel like dealing with Ferric Chloride anymore). Everything can be improved.

  35. LOVE IT! So, this is a video I found about how to trim and whatnot that I can appreciate. However, I have some products that someone at work recommended that I don't hate. Though, having "folding comb" in your pocket going through security sure as shit looks like a folding knife, so take it out first. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JQ2DLZT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078RZZRH6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Definitely interested in products, though.

  36. Spent over 8 hours in the ER, from 1AM to ~9:30AM. I'm OK. Well "ok." Don't have much use of my right hand which makes typing super fun. Docs not sure what's wrong with me ("Gee knucks we coulda told you that in under 5 minutes.") but they think it might be somethi9ng autoimmune related. Got prescribed ROIDS which might make me cranky. I'm sure no one will notice the difference. I have some really gross pics of my hand, b ut I'll spare y'all. Need to go get my scrip filled.

  37. Not quite yet, but gonna drive up to Dayton National. Yesterday was my dad’s birthday. I have a little note from me and my mom to put there. We’re past the anger. My mom would go with me, but she has physical difficulties.

  38. Yes that is so true. My dad died at the too-young age of 71 in 1994 and my mum at 85 in 2008. I'd give a whole lot to have them back to chat to over a few beers. Still miss them after all this time.

  39. I think I just broke a record. Just hung up from a 5 1/2 hr. phone call with my Mom. I just don't have the heart to cut her short after everything she's been through lately. My ear hurts and I'm starving. She really needs an ear to bend though, and as tough as that was, I just want to make her a little happier. I'm sure after she's gone I'll wish I could talk to her for hours.
