  1. Ran my first (mostly in person) conference since COVID this weekend. It was nice to see people in person!

  3. Euphoria I had been reading chatter about this show everywhere from the Wall Street Journal to NY Magazine so I decided to give it a chance. I used the last few weeks to get caught up. I agree with what I have been reading. There is something here. This show is going to be ultra-polarizing for people. The edgy-ness is turned up to 11, but once I got passed it I started to really like it. Euphoria has some genuine interesting insights and things to say about the human condition. I like (most of) the characters, I like the writing, I like the style, the young cast is great. I LOVE the music. This show has a maximalist vibe that really hooks me. The best thing about this show are the two leads. One of them is a trans woman. The honesty and vulnerablility in her performance have helped me better understand people like her. The other lead is Zendaya. She has this wise-beyond-her-years presence that commands the screen every time she is on. I can see why she is starting to show up all over the place in movies and TV. She is really talented. If you have been curious about this one, give it a chance. It is really something. 4. After 3" of basically sleet the other day the only good thing to come out of it was absolutely epic winter MTB conditions (driveway is a sheet of ice). Went out for 2hrs with the local crew and simply couldn't stop smiling.

  5. The sound: it’s spectacular! Compared to a Stax SRM-007tii with 60’s Mazda Brimar 6CG7’s or 50’s RCA long black plates with D getters, the sound is far more relaxed, analog, detailed, expansive, dynamic and musically involving. I can’t wait to get some NOS EL34’s in here. The Berkeley Reference DAC shows off the Megatron’s speed and transparency; the DAC and Megatron are both detail monsters. The Megatron is a far more capable amp when connected to the Berkeley Reference DAC than a current low-noise, low-distortion reference amp, such as the Topping A90, which I also have. The balanced inputs: dead quiet - perfect with the Wireworld Platinum 8 series XLR interconnects. The voltage gain: I can’t imagine needing any more gain than I’m getting with the 1958 Holland D foil getter E180CC’s (thanks to the community for the tip on these) and the 1948 RCA 5751 triple mica black plates. I will say that this amp takes a solid hour to warm up, however. Temperature: just touched 126F on the exterior of the right transformer case after a couple of hours - the internal temperature was typically within a couple of degrees when previously measured, likely due to the machined vents around the tubes. SMALL UPDATE: Kevin suggested some whisper fans to deal with the heat buildup; this is an excellent idea. Hum: there is none whatsoever, there is only dead silence, irrespective of where the pot is positioned - it’s absolutely impossible to tell whether the Megatron is on, when powered from a current-gen PS Audio regenerator set to 120V. Definitely T2 level stuff! I CANNOT THANK KEVIN ENOUGH

  7. I've been watching this as well (my youngest son turned me on to it). It is a difficult watch, for the reasons stated previously. My wife hates it, so late night only for me. I'm most of the way thru the first season, and will keep watching it. I'd agree about the acting, particularly Rue.

  11. A fascinating short on the attempts to save an amazing bit of architecture: Also holy shit is the Scottish accent like getting hit by a claymore when you don't expect it. I say this as someone who has watched 5 seasons of Shetland.

  13. "Euphoria" is excellent, very well done on many levels. That being said, it is a difficult watch for me. The sex & drug use amongst teen characters is extreme. That being said, it is still very compelling artistically, which keeps me coming back, despite my internal squirminess. The two Christmas episodes that aired between series 1 & 2, which each focused on characters Rue & Jules respectively, were stellar.

  15. there are already tube input versions. but this version does not have a servo on the output board, so it would need that. there is a version of that too, outputbuf2020 and outputbuf2020m

  17. Okay, consider this a recommendation coming from very low expectations, and I know they've been around awhile, but picked up one of those GE LED+ BR30 bulbs (battery backup, multi-color, or Bluetooth speaker extra "addition") with the speaker option and it isn't half bad. The surrounding can rattles a little with bass, and should be considered, but not the bulb's fault. I mean again have proper expectations (think of the same mono driver in a similar sized, cheap desktop speaker), but it's kinda cool if you have a use case. Anyone else using?

  19. Just finished today with the raw version, case and final cables are left for later. Soekris PSU and buffer boards. The designed Amgis transformer was not on stock, so I had to replace it with a 2x6V Toroid. 'm using OPA1602 now, but will switch to OPA1612 when they arrive. Have not yet finished the controll board, although I'm not sure I will. The sound is very similar to the dac2541, definitely better than the RME ADI2FS or other similar quality DS based DACs. More spacious and detailed. I think it even bests the Qutest, although it was a while I listened to it the last time. Can only recommend!

  20. David Lynch's friend, Chrysta Bell, seems to be channeling David Bowie, Goldfrapp, and Annie Lennox... her new album, Midnight Star, released January 21 (also on cassette and vinyl – why not CD?):

  21. Using some of last week's brisket, I'm attempting Texas-style brisket chili for the first time in the new dutch oven. I added some sausage as well because multiple animals make for better chili, in my opinion. Meat/Onion/Garlic Phase Tomatoes and seasoning added. Now just a matter of letting it simmer for 6 or 7 hours and some cast-iron-skillet cornbread will be made later.

  22. Chorizo in Spain is a grocery product, a kind of sausage with the stuffing into guts, made with pork meat and fat somewhat marinated with lots of paprika, hence the red color. Some types must be cooked, so you eat them with eggs, potatoes into a garbanzo or bean stew, with migas... but other types are cured and are eaten like ham or salami. In most South America countries they call chorizo to very different things, in some countries it's a kind of sausage but different to the Spanish type, or even a minced meat cured or marinated. Either way it's usually delicious
