  1. Had a great day and follow on. Went out for a meal on the day to a restaurant down a goat track. Serves devilled kidneys as a starter - what is not to like? And we have just got back from a walking weekend on Exmoor. Awesome walking, lots of hills - freezing cold (2C and a stiff wind) across the tops, including this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunkery_Hill . Also spent a day visiting a cousin who lives in Plympton. Great guy, as is his wife. Ex Royal Marine Commando (the UK equivalent as a Navy Seal), long retired - he's 78 now - but has some really hairy stories of what he got up to back in the day.

  2. I'm still dealing with the fallout of moving (something that is scheduled to continue indefinitely) and most of the time I have to listen to music I just fire up SomaFM's Synphaera channel. Synphaera is my current favorite ambient/downtempo/psychill/call it what you will label. The rest of the time, when I'm out and about in the world, welll... it's death metal. Florida death metal. Death - Individual Thought Patterns (1993). Chuck Schuldiner's "angsty" album where he continued his struggle to outgrow the blood and guts imagery of the band's early works. It's got Gene Hoglan AKA the best drummer in metal on it and is one of my favorite \m/ albums, full stop. Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick "Full Dynamic Range" re-release from 2019. The idea of an "audiophile" edition of a death metal album might seem silly, but TBH this version really IS better. Brickwalling ruins any form of music including death metal. Also BatS is better than Altars of Madness and I've been willing to die on this hill for 30 years now. Deicide - Legion (1992). The legend of this album, which has persisted for decades, is that the band had to record it twice. The first time it was so fast that the entire thing clocked in at ~25 minutes. That wasn't long enough for an album so they had to re-record it, "slower." Three decades on, if the original faster version exists, it has never seen the light of day. Tragically, there was no special 30th anniversary release last year. Cynic - Focus. Specifically the 2004 14-track remaster. There have been a bunch of vinyl re-issues in the last decade, but precious few CD versions. The funny thing about Cynic is that they're not a one album band. The returned 15 years later with 2008's Traced In Air, which to this day I have never heard. Massacre - From Beyond (1991). This album got maligned as a "Death wanna" on release, and I have never agreed with that. Similarly, when Massacre released the abysmally bad Promise in 1996, I think it re-ignited hate for From Beyond. Promise is indeed spectacularly bad. I have listened to the entire thing 3-4 times in 25 years and it has never improved. With that said, From Beyond is a bit of a sleeper classic. That was this weekend. This week's gonna include Malevolent Creation, early Cannibal Corpse, Nocturnus and maybe some Obituary.

  6. My last thread here was about the Zus which I ended up buying used, the Soul Supreme, for a nice deal and I'm ready to move up the game.. Enter the Devore. I have been on a killing spree listening to speakers to find my next purchase and so far the only ones I liked were the Devore O/96 and Fleetwood Deville. So.. I'm curious if any of you guys heard the O/96 and O/baby ? The O/baby really is way cheaper than the O/96 that I loved but the store here doesn't carry them.. given that the O/baby has same new tweeter as their more expensive Reference and same woofer as the O/96 but smaller cabinet, maybe they could represent even a step up in sound or similar one. Also if you guys think I should try some other speaker brand shoot me.

  7. All the mortises are cut so beginning the tenon process tonight. Also got the back, ugly half, of the bench top glued up except for the Birds Eye maple that will be the visible side the bench top.

  9. I should be listening to new music, but instead I'm stuck in a young-people-listening-to-old-songs warm musical swamp.

  13. So I did indeed install 150K and 200K chain for the bias resistors of the C2M1000170D when I first built my Carbon. Today I replaced the 200K with a 150K, I had also dialed the bias back to 18mA and disengaged the servo. Then took a few measurements after letting the amp warmed up. Now the PZTA42 Vce is around 13.7V, voltage drop of the 20K R is 25.4V and the Vgs of the C2M1000170D is around 3.3V. And I did not blow up the amp.

  21. Thanks for joining Head-Case. I'm glad you're here. That said, you should be aware that this isn't your typical internet forum. We're not here so that you'll have another place to sell your stuff. We're not looking for people trying to pad their post counts, or demonstrate their ability to find witty things on the internet. If you've come here looking for advice on which headphones to buy, perhaps you should check out http://www.innerfidelity.com. Tyll Hertsens, founder of Head-Room and long time community giant is the proprietor there, and does everything he can to ensure that accurate information is disseminated about headphones at every level. This is predominantly a place for friends to discuss music, audio gear, and whatever else tickles our fancy. We are sometimes quite rude, often irreverant, and regularly abusive. Think of it like the corner bar where everyone knows each other. Don't mistake our familiarity with each other as familiarity with you, even if you've seen our names in other locations before. Spend some time reading before you start to post. Get familiar with what is going on, and who the various people are. Don't just jump right into the fray. This is your only warning, but I hope you can participate. There's a lot of good information, and more importantly, good people here.

  22. Mmmmm pie...... Port modded I'd always pick the 007's as that unleashes their full potential but stock... well that puts the CRBN's on a more equal footing. The 007's are more honest over al but that can also be a detriment for some users and the CRBN would be a better fit with many music styles. They are more forgiving and warmer where the 007's will always be brutally honest. Also the CRBN's does things the 007's just don't do well, ease of fitment for one...

  23. The Chord Mojo was officially discontinued last summer. There is a bit of speculation about its successor... Chord has a tease pic with a date of January 31: https://chordelectronics.co.uk/coming-soon I hope they design it to run without a battery or resolve whatever battery issues were plaguing the Mojo. The Chord Mojo 2 is now available and the reviews are rolling out. I think I'll look into one seriously once they've eliminated the Micro-USB jack (for Poly compatibility). At some point, they'll probably change it to another USB-C for a Poly 2. An interesting post from the designer, Rob Watts, regarding its crossfeed implementation: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/chord-mojo-2-thread-___-product-released-january-31-2022-starting-on-page-95-of-thread.885405/post-16800704 This overview is decent:

  26. RIP to a dear friend - Martin Kari - One of the original and fellow PLOWEDster aka - Marty aka - S'tan D'mon {Satan Demon} -- He did lead many of us into temptation. Here he is eyeing his next victim from the table at Ardbeggeddon He was a gentile gent from Minnesota, and loved his puns and high end audio equipment. Cheers my friend - the angels share is all yours.

  27. I listened to the Cortina three times, twice off a BHSE and once off the new GC amp. Unfamiliar sources are an issue plus regular meet conditions but there was something about the midrange that bothered me, like an etch to voices which came off as very artificial but I need more time with them to nail it down. I also feel that headband is utter trash, on the second time I put them on my head the headpad caught on the metal springs causing the headphones to make a very lough "twang" sound through the earcups. I prefer the older type on the Voce, seems much more solid and better made. I'm also not sure if these are worth the price, just put them next to the CRBN and it looks like some cheap fake out of China, The headpad and earpads feel cheap and nasty and not high end in any way. This is always a personal thing but they were both sitting in front of me and they don't look, or feel, like a comparable product. The biggest issue for me though are the people who were there from DCA, I mean fucktards doesn't really cover them. I know fullwell I can be brash and bombastic but these people are utter fucking idiots. I went to their table to try the Voce and wanted to know when they were fixed as the original release of the Voce... they were fucking awful. This earpads never made any sense and it's clear to anybody who has messed with electrostatics for s long time. Same issue as with the King Sounds back in the day and they now, too, have moved to new earpads. Now the guy there, who was quick to point out he was the president of the company, said this gem when I said the Voce was awful, "Ohhh you like electrostatics so you don't like bass!" Yeah... and he also wanted to ask if I had ever designed headphones and when I started to listen, he ran over to Justin to bitch about me... which I heard most of. What a fucking idiot. Then we have the lady who was there, when I said matching of earpads was stupid loudly said this "SIR, THEY ARE HANDMADE!!!" Well fucking duhhh, all earpads are handmade outside of the molded ones super cheap ones. Most of my life I've been making things by hand, which have to be extremely consistent and it is easily done with far worse materials than these. Now I reached out to two manufacturers and asked if they had measured earpad effect on the sound. 0.1-0.4dB is worst case and with large production runs of earpads they are much closer. So the bottom line, the people making them are fucktards but I need to spend more time with the headphones. I don't feel they are worth the extra cost over the Voce, which looks much better made, and now sounds far better than they did. Add to that the Audeze CRBN being sold as B-stock for less than 3k$ and this becomes a pretty hard sell.
