  1. On the 8th January I finally paid for a Blu-Ray Player Pioneer LX-91, of which is currently with Pioneer UK having the latest software upgrades, and DVD Multi region mod.

I have been informed that I should take delivery of this by this Friday-15th Jan.

Looking forward to watching a few movies:)

  2. It's not wrong if it's an opinion -- I'm severely negatively affected by digital picture artifacts (to the point where I delayed entry into DVD for years, and invested heavily into laserdisc), so to me it's more important than it is to you. Seeing how many people look at blotchy screens (this was especially obvious in the CRT era, when screens needed regular demagnetizing, and most didn't), I have come to believe that most laypeople wouldn't notice.

    :asshat:

I agree with your views on the Digital artifacts first noted on DVD, of which I invested into at the same time as I was importing Laserdisc's from the USA.

I bought into both but preferred LD, but then again ''for me personally'' it's not just the picture or sound, but also the collectability of the artwork which is very attractive........I am still purchasing Laserdisc's today.

Laserdisc lives comfortably with my DVD / HD DVD & Blu-ray's their all great.

    Sincere Regards

  3. Before purchasing a new TV it's always best to get the retailer to take the TV off the same video loop which feeds all the shops video, and ask them for a demo connected separately to a dvd/blu-ray player ect...

As a number of members have said in so many words, the retailers do not really display the screens properly, which dosn't help!

However with guys such as ourselves, we would look and ask, because of our pastime and the seeking of picture quality.

A number of the population just want good price, looks, and to be happy with what they see with first impressions.

I have a Pioneer Kuro PDP6090 for the main room and would be happy with an LED-LCD Samsung for the bedroom.

Panasonic do have a rather large selection, of which as mentioned before can be very confusing indeed.

    :confused::confused:

  4. The following help provided by Robm321,

    wikipedia_icon.gif Existentialism

, is a stage of development at which an individual questions the very foundations of their life.

I am fine with my foundations, of which can be a long story for many of us here.

However where I am now is a side subject, of which others ''hopefully can relate to, to some degree''

To finish off a dream goal of having for the first time my HiFi & AV systemsetup correctly, of which has taken almost 12yrs by April of 2010.

Things are coming together very slowly, but reading about others experiences has been very inspiring ''of which I deeply appreciate''

When I finally have my 2 AV Support cabinets made, then I will take a weeks annual leave to set all of this up.

Thank you to this site ''in part'' in making this journey of mine more pleassurable.

Kindest & Sincerest Regards all round.

P.S. never underestimate what you write and in turn what others read.:headcase::dan:

  5. One of my hobbies is writing. A friend of mine is also a very good story teller. I wanted to share the following with you because it is a damn good short read and would like to dedicate it to all the DIY'ers here. The following was written by Stan as a result of a conversation we had about another forum member who enjoys woodworking:

When i was eleven, my mother packed us up and we took a U-haul from my childhood home in Oregon to Oil City, Pennsylvania, to care for my grandparents in their waning years. It was this rural area that taught me the truth about death, but that's a conversation for another time.

My grandfather was a dogfighter in the Pacific theater of WWII. He was the kind of guy who had a room full of medals and war memorabilia that he never entered, and told his stories, only on his deathbed, and only to my stepfather for fear of how the stories would effect the gentler, female side of his progeny. When i moved into his decrepit house he was old and arthritic, bloated with inaction and diabetes, hardly able to push out of his chair to walk to the kitchen and yet incapable of entertaining the thought of letting the farm go overrun. I was too young to understand why at the time, but he somehow found the strength in his aching bones to get out on the tractor, clean up the branches from the orchard, and check the array of birdhouses he had planted on the old farm, once an airstrip but now chest-high grass.

Behind the house were three buildings. There was a garage where he parked the lawn mower and stored tons of planed wooden planks. There was the toolshed, full of rusty implements untouched in decades, reflecting the inability of the farm to function anymore from the age of its owners, the age of its heart. And there was the woodshop where my grandfather spent most of his remaining time. His hands were weak, but steady, and I provided the strength needed to haul the wood from the shed to the shop. So he stayed in the shop most of the day, every day, building things. He built chairs and bed boxes, toy horses and birdhouses. I watched him build a lot of things, but was too young to get why. He showed me how to build a bird house, and we built one together, and then he died.

We never got along too well, since by that point I was already a nerd, a bastard raised by his mother on the weekends and by the school system during the week. I'm pretty sure the entire family is shocked that I didn't turn out gay. I could never shoot any of his guns, I'm not fit, nor military, nor did I understand why a man would spend the end of his life building bird houses. But now I know. And now his house sits abandoned, molding, and condemned, and I'm sure the orchard has overgrown the place where the trailer sits. His tools have all been stolen by a neighbor and we're having a hell of a time coming up with an impetus to get them back. The lawnmower's shed has collapsed, and the toolshed's windows are all broken, the kudzu growing inside. John's even told me a few of Bud's war stories. My memories of that sad, dying place have faded, but in my backyard are a windchime that rings with the breath of the wind, reminding me of the birdhouse on the back fence and why a man can do nothing but continue to build, until he's taken apart.

Just read the story and was moved by the content.....Good to reflect on and also to appreciate all that we have.

Family that we do not choose......we need to work hard in keeping good communications with, and the friends we choose in life to always let them know how much they mean to us.

I always tell my close friends to tell me how they feel, and not to hold back ''for fear of being misunderstood''

Guys' ''not all guys'' but a good number, hold back from telling their friends how much they are loved and appreciated over the years of thier lives, and only when they are close to death do they open up with feelings.

This is how I see it.....by telling those that are close to you, how much they are loved....you could actually play a small part in saving them from deaths door, and in turn help them to smile a lot more when you are not with them, when living thier daily lives.

We are all fragile ''no matter what some may think'' and we all have a need to be appreciated and understood........LIFE IS GOOD:D

Appreciate what you have written friend.

    Kindest Regards

  6. actually it is kind of fun testing the skin density of newbies. maybe a newbie forum isn't the best idea.

i see we had one this morning for about 10 minutes, then it disappeared. :kitty:

That was me.....bu hey!!!! I deserved it from you Gentlemen, even thou I was genuine in my replies......Oh! well I guess I was misunderstood as usual.....

I would just like to say that your not such a bad bunch, and I really enjoy visiting this site, and genuinely appreciate what I have learned so far from yourselves.

No doubt I will correspond with yourselves at some stage.

    Sincere Regards

P.S. the reason why I am very polite is because I used to have a foul mouth when I was a lot younger, but then I grew up......various experiences later.

  7. Now that's what I'm talking about!!....very well said!:palm::rolleyes:

My HD800's are fantastic and love what they bring out in the music....But Heh! That's me:) I find these cans improve from what I had before, and for me personally are worth every penny / cent / dollar & pound....

  8. I think a LARGE number of people just don't want the hassle with shipping, customs, charges and so on, with importing US equipment to the UK or europe.

To be honest I can truly understand this, as this has personally cost me a great deal of money over the years.

For Example' I imported a brand new, boxed sealed (a rare find) Pioneer Elite CLD-97 Laserdisc PLayer from a seller in the US, which took about 18mths from discussions to the item being in my hands.

    It cost me

  9. I understand that this is your take on the HD800, but I would not stubbornly jump to conclusion that the HD800s are "calculative, clinical and sterile." It seems to me that your listening experience with the HD800s is limited to only your associated equipment. I have not heard the HD800s with any of the associated equipment you listed, but I have heard them from amps such as the Luxman P-1, SDS-XLR, BUDA, DNA Sonett, Audio gd Phoenix, Balancing act, Zana Deux, ect...with several different setups/sources both balanced and single ended.

What I did notice in my sampling was that the HD800s sounded different in almost every setup. While some were not particularly great, some setups had the most dynamic sound i've ever heard. Some people who don't know better might take your write up and conclude that the HD800s are exactly how you describe them to be without ever trying out different setups themselves. Also have you actually listened to any of the other phones you listed besides the ones you own(k1000, 4070, O2)?

Your reply is diplomatic......and I personally like this approach.

I never even lisened to my HD800 before purchasing and have no problems at all, I look forward to matching them up with a suitable Amp as and when funds allow.

Heaphones are subjective from one person to another.......

  10. You guys are gormea chefs,

Great food, great pictures and the presentation...WOW!

I used to be a silver service Waiter....and am impressed by the presentation shown here. :D

I have just eaten a chicken and stuffing sandwich with wholmeal bread, which is a very poor 2nd to what some of you are eating.

P.S. Old Pa .......Fantastic Pictures and the mixed salad looks really inviting to say the least, I myself prepare salads like this and I also add fruit to the mix......Weldone and enjoy

  11. I know what you mean,

But I wouldn't get rid of my other headphones, as they are good enough.

The HD800's have the ability of revealing subtle sounds and the advantage and the advantage of the larger earcups makes them more comfortable ect.....

I just need to work on purchasing a headphone Amp now, which will be a few weeks, or possibly months yet.

    Good hearing from you Thorsen:)

  12. Hey Thorsen,

How are your HD800's? I have yet to spend good quality time with mine, but August & September are very busy months.....

I'm the guy who works all the overtime that nobody else wants, which is fine for me and all of my work colleagues are good friends.....we have all known each other for many years.

I'm off Today so will get some quality time listening to them after the chores are done..

  13. Just a regular Guy Thorsen:)

I work many hours in order to purchase all that I have, and am sure you are the same.

It's taken myself 11 1/2yrs so far and I still don't have my equipment setup correctly, for reasons such as I moved into my first home 16months ago and have been very busy turning this into a warm and cozy environment for myself to come home to.

It all takes time, as I am sure you can relate to here, my support stands have to be made to order and will not be able to start work on this before Jan-2010.

The cabinet maker is expanding the carpenters workshop and will hopfully be finished by the end of October, He has explained and reassured me that he will contact me when he's ready to proceed.

I had a very tough time before I moved into my first home.....a long story!, and have learned to be very patient and to work within my means.

Thank you thou for your kind words.

    Kindest Regards

  14. Hi A.Thorsen,

I have also read a similar comparison on the AV forums.

That's why with my personal experiences with Pioneer, I know that they are dependable to produce the goods.

The Denon A1UD player is a 1 = plays all aproach which is fine, but for those of us who have separate reference players the Pioneer is a perfect choice for Blu-Ray and CD....(well perfect for myself anyway:).)

Obviously if you're rolling in the big dough, sure, buy the Denon.

Your above statment is a little sweeping, but I know where your coming from and understand.

    To be honest a number of us enthusiast, who have regular incomes purchase these players as well, my personal example is the following;

I have been purchasing a Lexicon mc12b & lx7 amp of which has taken 4+ yrs now and hopfully this will be completed by late November.

These items have been kept in the shop all of this time, and will have full upgrades and the Pioneer lx91 (US version is the 09.)

The player is being added because I complained....a long story, I don't mind waiting for things in life.....not to mention the fact that I truly appreciate this far greater.

    Enjoyed your reply

    Sincere Regards :D:)

  15. Pioneer have a solid reputation for producing the goods when it comes to their high end equipment.

I remember when I first entered the AV pastime in April of 1998, reading reviews of their Laserdisc Players in particular:

    1) Pioneer Elite CLD-97 was tested against mcintosh laserdisc player MLD 7020 of which cost approx $2000 more than the pioneer, but guess what? the main guts of the mcintosh was the CLD-97's

    2) PIoneer Elite Laserdisc inner transport was also used for the Theta Laserdisc player which cost approx $3000 more than the Pioneer equivalent.

On both occasions the test revealed that the more expensive player only just beat the Pioneers, but you would never have noticed the difference.

Also Pioneer DVD ect transport guts are used in players from Lexicon.

The bottom line is that PIoneer are trusted throughout the industry for their build quality.

Also another thing to note! is that Pioneer Japan had HiDef Muse LD movie disc's(and players) that were 1125 lines resolution from 1995 onwards and were going to take the Laserdisc format to the next level.

Market forces prevented them from this..........when the movie industry eventually fully backed DVD.

Pioneer have a long history for producing ground breakthroughs

    :o:o:D

  16. Hi M3NTAL,

The Pioneer is ''IN MY BOOKS'' up there with the likes of Denon DVD-A1UD, although Denons reference player plays all formats, whilst Pioneer focusses on DVD(upscaling.) Blu-Ray and CD, which is totally fine with myself as I have a SACD & DVD audio reference players already.

I am waiting to purchase one of the Pioneer LX91(UK model equivalent.) or possibly import the 09 from the US through a trusted dealer here.

I am what you would call a loyal Pioneer man, sure I have mardwre from other manufacturers, but when it comes to Laserdisc, dvd and Blu-Ray players Pioneer can be trusted to produce the goods.

The player is built to last and will sound great with regular CD's especially with those Wolfson dacs on board.

Keep in touch and let me know what you decide?

    Sincere Regards

    :D:)
