  1. Ok, I have a 10 year old nephew with a laptop. This was purchased by his IBC mother (my sister) at a pawn shop for cheap, and, of course, without the original XP media.

    Need I say more?

But, I'm stuck getting XP back on it.

The machine is not up for Vista, nor Win7 (pity, because I have a spare Vista upgrade), and Linux (Ubutu, etc) just is not an option for the spawn of IBC.

So, how do I get a reasonable version of XP?

  2. I can send you a HEV70, and really (almost) don't care if you send it back, as it (allegedly) has an issue, but I could not be bothered to verify that (it sold, and was sent back).

The first thing that any he60 owner should do is lop off the POS Senn connector, and terminate Stax. Take your lopped off connector and make an adapter, like this:

And, I'd definitely get the o rings, replace them yourself, or, have someone like Alex @ apuresound do it (he has owned 4 sets, and worked on another half dozen), and can do the termination. In fact, I could use a set of o-rings myself, though mine were replaced when I bougt them 3 years ago.

  3. Ok, sorry for picking on you Al, it's just so fun, it is hard to resist. :P I really shouldn't talk since I haven't finished the SOHA II I started many many months ago.

Sweetie, re-read the HC motto - remember, I brought a WORKING SOHA II and didn't even power it up either.

  4. Something that I noticed on namaan's gorgeous bijou build as well at Canjam..he was running too low a gain for my tastes.

On my (balanced / dual differential) Bijou, the only thing I've ever seen past 11 (o'clock) is the K1000, and they were at about 4 o'clock. This is from a guy who runs a Raptor wide open.

I had cords out the wazoo (6 Quail, and some computer grade cords, along with my power strip)... the problem was one source to 5 amps, where one was needed to troubleshoot the Raven. My intent was for everyone to have listening impressions of the two eXStata amps (one sand, one tube), but...

Bijou was there kinda just sitting. A shame really, as it is quite nice. She deserves a better home than I can give her, as she really has served me very well - just not well enough with the hd800.

Good thing Marc took some perverse obsession with the Raven design, as the circuit designer is not helping a whole lot. And, these boards are the cheapest, crappiest ever - only because he threw them in for free (probably because he could only give them away). The lack of testpoints to bias the thing REALLY makes it fun.

    Next time, damnit.

  5. Like, I was, you know, there, and stuff... but, don't remember much. All horrorshow like.

Left Friday on my way to Houston, via Austin, stayed up til 2am soldering, soldered again from 8:30-10am, showed up an hour late for the meet, listened to 3 pieces of gear belonging to 3 different people for a total of 3 minutes and left an hour late at 4, zoomed home @ 85mph, and brought my wife goodies from La Madeleine.

Was then NOT stabbed in my sleep that night.

    The End.

  6. Dayum... so much love.

Amazing how many friends sent me email - Ralph Lauren, Acura, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, HP - even Jude!

Never thought I'd make 52, especially considering how bad I suck at making amps.

Gracias, all - now to man up and go see my octogenarian parents.

  7. The fasteners are rock solid. HIGHLY recommended.

Don't let the pic fool you - it is a Jack n Jill bath arrangement, where my side is closed off, and makes a rather convenient DIY 'alcove'. Since it is my office, the wife just ignores it.

    To wit:

  8. I didn't set it, did you?

I'm mixing that with Vulcan... BTW, great job on the Vulcan bias, Naaman.

Fork. N/m... but, still begs the question what is the bias issue - rails are good at 373v at the boards, and the 30v is right on 30v at the psu. LEDs are all on.

Like giving a monkey (not THE MONKEY) the controls to an F-16 in mid-flight.

  9. Continuing on my own personal trail of fail, the BH comes up today way out whack from yesterday, but I can get both +- to 1v, and the delta to ground to about 3v on each side, but...

Yesterday we set bias at 560v... today it won't go above 527v... what the fucking fuck?

DIY was invented to try (wo)men's souls... and a walk through my DIY soul / sole would scarcely get one's feet wet.

Thinking of some shallow, meaningless hobby - and no doubt there will be suggestions.

  10. We need pics!

Pictures in a classified location are sometimes hard to come by... to be fair, we spent almost ALL the time working - really. Listening time was truly less than 30 minutes, and sadly Marc got zero listening time. In fact we were so pressed for time, I didn't even leave Austin until after I was supposed to be HOME, and, I am paying dearly for that today.

Anyhoo, this is the data we have:

    AusDIY.jpg

Blue Hawaii on the bench, Steve is slaving on the F5, Vulcan and Raven on the lower right in queue. Working Beta22, eXStata and Bijou on the table, bagging for someone to give them a listen.

  11. In summary, the BH had a loose fet heatsink (fixed), the Vulcan came up ok, very stable, looking good, but plugging in a XLR to RCA adapter sent a 450v cap archy-sparky right in Marc's face (blew out the side, not the top), so gotta fix (or replace) the PSU, and she is good to go.

Raven is a complete cluster fuck. I wired the rectifier backwards (you know the old is that a top or bottom view on the tube spec sheet), but even with good b+ the boards were a complete mystery. It took longer than it should have due to my lack of due diligence, but would have been better off leaving it at home. She is headed to the back of the line - again. I have a couple of pics - sadly, not of the blast - which I literally heard from outside through Marc's front door.

We had it all - a surprise visit by Alex Cavalli, and a clinic by Dr Wood on how to build a workbench. Amazing to be in Austin when Austin City Limits is going on, and checking out NO live music.

Oh, and if ANYONE knows where to find M8 x.75 nuts for a Noble pot, do give me a shout out.
