  1. You and everyone else.  I think it's a little early to start selling off the HD-800 for the 800s especially until they definitely announce whether or not they will allow you to send the old one in for upgrades.

The other thing I am hoping for is that they have an option not to buy the 800s with that expensive balanced cable included.

any idea how many hd800's have been sold since its introduction in 2009?  i don't but it would have to be tens of thousands. do you honestly think that it would be in sennheiser's financial interest to offer a retrofit for every unit they've sold, let alone to have the capacity to do so?

the hd800s is a new iteration and the hd800 will continue to be produced. you want an hd800 with a helmholtz resonator? then buy the hd800s or have a crack at diy.

    sennheiser isn't toyota and the hd800 isn't a prius.

  2. A very informative post on the HD800s from our old pal Arnaud.

I've been on the sideline about jumping back on the HD800 bandwagon after selling my 009s, but this new pair might be enough to convince me if the price is right. The HD600/650 are just so damn good that I haven't been jealous of the HD800 sound.

yep, that's the head-fi post i was reluctant to refer to. thanks for referencing.

  3. according to the other place, the hd800s isn't just a hd800 with a diy adapted mod and a new coat of paint.

sennheiser did investigate that approach but found that it attenuated the highs too much and compromised the sound staging. they opted for a "helmholtz resonator" (which is a type of tuned absorber apparently) to redress the 6khz peak while extending the high and low frequencies.

it could be the heimlich maneuver for all i care as long as it does the job.

  4. I heard the Abyss at Whittlebury hall November ish 2013 with no idea of the price, and when they told me I was stunned that anyone would think about paying anywhere near that much for them,as they seemed poorly made, the fit was awkward and  the guy had problems adjusting the headband screw.,  .. The Stax SR009  however..... the seed was planted, and after a further longer listen at a dealers to both the SR 009,which I now have bought ,Abyss, just to confirm with my ears what I thought the first time, as by now there were some reviews saying how good they were(the king has no clothes) I was still not impressed. The senn hd800 were the only other pair that impressed me(well worth the money) and to be honest if I could not have afforded the 009's I would have purchased them.

i think the abyss's build quality is rock solid. it looks and feels like it could withstand being run over by a monster truck. just dust it off and hang it up in the tool shed.

  5. speaking of headphones... i spent a couple of hours with the he-1000. it was surprisingly light and comfortable for a planar magnetic and possibly the most comfortable headphone i've worn - evar! i'd describe it as having a balanced presentation. nothing really jumps out. it's not a headphone that wows you but it would be very easy to live with and well suited to long listening sessions because of its non-fatiguing presentation. i'd consider buying one if it cost the same as an hd800. now back to the ferret legging.

  6. Well name dropping was not cool in retrospect. I just thought being new headphones and being new on here myself giving a baseline might be a good idea. It was not a good idea and I apologize for my mistake. In the future I will say other flagships and leave it at that. Happy 4th to everybody. It's my bday. Commence getting hammered and blowing up stuff.

so you think this is a headphone forum

  7. I joined this place cause I thought it was going to be an easy going "bar" atmosphere. So far you guys seem more rule intensive than that one place I'm not suppose to bring up but that 99% are from. What the fuck is going on here? False advertising.

this ain't cheers but if you're buying i'll pretend to be interested

  8. Had this headphone for a few days now. It's nice but could us a bit of refinement in the build quality. Compared to the he-500 I owned though miles better. I like these more than allot of other flagships/ highend headphones: HD800, Ether, Lcd-x, 2.2, 3c and f, oo7mk2(sz3), airbow sr-sc-11, th-900, etc. but still feel like those phones keep up. At the $2600 I paid for it I consider it a good deal. A great deal would start at $2299, hopefully by xmas hfm can get it down to that price and maybe add a beefier, better looking headband and thicker ear pads...imo

    Hello jibzilla. A friendly reminder - this isn't Head-Fi.

  9. I know the audio world is full of nonsense, but this is not one of those places.

Above is a basic comparison of various cores.

    attachicon.gifcore_comparison.png

This is a comparison of the same Cinemag transformers, one with hi nickel core, the other with pinstriped nickel and M6 steel.

What you should notice is that for both, at low signal levels, the nickel has considerably lower distortion. However, as the signal level increases and the core reaches saturation, the steel becomes better. This is why nickel generally makes less sense in a single ended transformer where the DC leads to early saturation -- basically, by the time the core is large enough to accommodate the DC, it is so big that its permeability is reduced to the level of steel. But in an application with little to no DC, the better core can be utilized.

Much more is available in Chapter 11 of The Handbook for Sound Engineers, Third Edition by Bill Whitlock. Available from http://www.jensen-transformers.com/application-notes/

    interesting. thanks for that.
