  1. Funny that I just saw this thread.  My wife and I had a long talk on New years days about our goals for the year.  We are both very overweight and have committed to working on that as a priority.  I want to be less than 300lbs by the end of the year which means i have to lose at least 70lbs over the year.  It's doable as I've done it before.  I'm waiting for my bike now and would like to get in at least 1500 miles for the year.  I can ride almost every day of the year here so it should not be hard.  Also as the weight comes off it should make the riding easier.  I also set some professional goals to get a couple of more IT certs.  It is going to be a busy year.

  2. Do any of you guys have a good stretching routine for warming up before a ride?  I am trying to get loosened up a bit before my rides hoping that it will help some.  Lower back and knees are where I have the most trouble.  Any help would be appreciated.

  3. I'm a little bummed today.  I talked to the bike shop about my order to confirm my address and was told that a couple of things were on back order including the bike itself.  It's okay, I was just hoping to have it next week.  There are a couple of guys here that ride regularly that are always asking when i am getting a bike to ride with them.  This morning I saw one of them and the first thing he asked was if I had bought a bike yet.  When I told him yes and what I got he was impressed and wanted to know when it would be here so we could ride.  I know I'm going to get dropped by these guys after about 5 minutes of riding but it will be fun.  They are all in good shape and ride about 100 miles a week.  I'll be happy to make half that at first.

  4. ¿Orbea? ¿Chiquillo, tú de dónde eres?

If I understand right you are asking where I am from.  I live in Guatanamo Bay, Cuba on the Navy base.  I am originally from the states.  South Carolina to be  exact.

I am really excited about the bike.  I spent a lot of time researching and comparing and it was really a toss up between a couple of bikes.  I ended up with this one because of the component set.  One of my requirements was that it had a 11-32 cassette due to the terrain here.  Once I get some of the weight off and get a little more in shape I will most likely change to better components.  I am completely lusting after a set of MadFiber wheels but those will have to wait since they cost the more than the bike did.

My wife is still giving me shit because I had to buy pedals.  Her comment was something like "for that much money they should at least give you a set of those Wal-mart pedals so you could ride it."  I just laughed and bought the ones I wanted anyway.

  5. Good to see you are back on the bike Vicki.

This should be here in a couple of weeks.  I bought the bike and a lot of new accessories that I had been putting off for a while.  The wife has been very cool about the whole thing and told me to buy exactly what I wanted.  I explained that there are much more expensive builds but that I needed to ride a lot before I got to the point of needing a high-end build.  This one should last me for a long time and if I want I can always upgrade parts when needed.

I'll post pics of me with it when it gets here so that my general fatassitude is known.  I made up my mind to lose the weight and by seeing constant reminders of what I look like to others I will be motivated to get smaller.

  6. Thanks for all this help guys.  I really wish that I was in the states and could just go to a shop and get what I wanted.  It would make life a lot easier.

That being said, can anyone recommend a good online retailer to buy from?  I have bought from Jenson and Pricepoint before but it was just tools and wheels, not a whole bike.

  7. The one thing I do not want to do is be "stretched out" while riding.  On my current bike I feel that way and it is not comfortable at all after a couple of miles.  It is a mountain bike though and when going down hills it feels fine but not for any extended period of just riding along.  When I rode the Roubaix in a 58 it felt right.  I'm sure if I had it fitted to me it would have been even better.  I'm really kicking myself for not buying it when I was on vacation.

Now I just have to decide which to get.  I cannot find anywhere that will sell the Roubaix online so I'm looking at other options.  Right now the Colnago CLX 3.0 is my top choice with the BMC Road Racer SL01 a close second.  These are at the top of my price range and I would prefer to spend less but I also want something that should last me for a long time.

  8. I was using the fit system on wrenchscience.com.  They have all there bike frames listed by c-t-c or c-t-t.  I was completely confused at first then I figured out what they were doing and it made sense.  Bikesdirect does the same thing as do a couple of other sites.  I've gotten to the point of making sure to look at the geometry page to make sure of what I am looking at.

  9. I am 6'00" with a 32" inseam.  The inseam measurement was measured according to a couple of different sites.

According to all my measurements I should look for a 53 center-to-center of 54 center-to-top frame size.

I swear every site I look at has the frame sizes listed differently.  It gets confusing after a while.

I just looked at the specs on the Roubaix 58 and the center-to-top is 54cm.  So I guess that is what I am looking for.  Even without a fitting that was the most comfortable I've been on a bike in years.

  10. The wife green lighted a new bike with the stipulation that if my truck dies I have to ride the bike until we save for a new vehicle for me.  It's okay since it does not rain much here and it is always riding weather.  Since I don't have an LBS I'm on my own as far as fit goes.  I know from a couple of websites that take your measurements and give you a starting point that I need something with a 53-54cm seat post.  I road a Specialized Roubaix in 58 while back home and it felt good.  Unfortunately I cannot get one of those shipped here so I have to go with someone who ships to me.  I have looked at some Kestrel models and am wondering if anyone has rode one of these.  I see mixed reviews for them.  I rode one years ago but only for a short test ride.  I could not afford it then so did not take it out long.  I also keep looking at the Colnago CLX 3.0 and the BMC Road Racer SL01.  Those are both at the top of my spending range.  I also considered going with bikes direct and getting one of the Motobacane bikes with a good group and upgrading frames in a year or so.  I have a friend who rides one of their bikes and is happy as can be with it.  Just not really sure what to do right now.

  11. Thanks guys.

Nate and Pars, let me know what you have.  I am working on a Shalco stepped attenuator for my Beta 22 but would like to have some sort of volume control other than my pc.  After that it will be moved to a balanced SSMH amp I have in the works.  One of those dumb things I just want to do for fun.  I know it defeats the whole premiss of the SSMH but I want to do it anyway.

  12. I was looking at the Schitt Audio Mjolnir amp and noticed that it has an 4-gang Alps RK27 for volume control.  Does anyone know where I could find these.  I see some motorized ones on ebay but am not sure if they are real.  I don't really want to spend more on a stepped attenuator than the rest of the whole project cost.

  13. what we need to do is find a massive stock of 1000uf/25v blackgate non-polarized caps.

The only place that has them in stock wants $80 each and we need 35 per board.

Soooo...for about 10x the price of the amp I could have it all Blackgated up?

Even if I wanted to go nuts with it, there is no way I could pull the trigger on that.

  14. Does anyone know of a diy solution to power conditioning?  The reason I ask is that the power where I live is not very consistent.  Line voltage varies from115v-125v and I don't know if there is ever an actual 60hz cycle going on.  I would like to build something that I could have a constant and reliable voltage coming out of for my audio gear.  I did not think that it made that much difference but when it starts to fluctuate my dac acts a little weird and loses lock and my cd transport does not read the toc.  It is very annoying and I want to fix the problem without having to buy one of the $4K units I see advertised in the magazines.  Can anyone help with this?

  15. Oh wait a minute... re ^ were you talking about going UP hills? In that case there are some hills that truly SUCK!

Yes, UP sucks!  Unfortunately that's what I have to deal with.  I'm trying to get up the stamina to do the Fence Line ride next year.  It goes all the way around the base on the perimeter road.  About 28 miles in all.  Lots of cool stuff to see on that ride.

  16. I finally got a chance to get back on the bike today. I did about 7 miles, which is nothing compared to most of you, but for a fat guy like me it was pretty good. Considering I had not been on the bike in a couple months, it felt good too, except my ass is going to be sore tomorrow. I just wish I had a place to ride that was not either a constant climb or downhill. There is almost no flat ground here.
