  1. Back to these amazing amps, what's really weird all the traffic noise I hear. I only listen to classical music, a lot of concert hall recordings (or almost all). I've had this happen once before with some horns, but now even more I'm getting major traffic noise from the recordings. Especially the older halls are prone to this. I keep having to pause just to make sure it's not in my environment (I'm in a very quiet room on the edge of town (almost the country).

Truly amazing little amps, congratulations to the Mafia and community.

Yes that's true, I do hear a few noises that were never audible on vinyl.  Reminds me of some reviews way back of say Decca recordings made in London they mentioned the rumble of tube trains from below.

  2. I was looking to use the MMBTA56LT1G SOT-23 version, which can dissipate 225 ma max. Looking at the schematic it shouldn't exceed that. BUT..... I'd be much happier using the 1A TO-92. Trouble is, Avnet US want $40 to ship to UK, and if I buy from Avnet Europe, it's minimum of 2000! Now I guess I wouldn't be using all those!

So, if anyone's got some spare, I'd be happy to take them off their hands for a fair price + shipping, Paypal fees, etc.

Someone posted a few pages back that RS in UK has the MPSW56, (which they do)) and also the smd device you seek.  Search uk.rs-online.com

  3. Got a link to that switch geoff? I dig the purple

yes as previously mentioned in p625 I made it incorporating a standard pushbutton.

Those spiders hooked to the heatsinks look awesome. 600 v cable wrapped on electric tape?

    Great idea.

No electrical tape was used in the construction of the amplifier.  No spiders were harmed either.

  4. Can’t be much help there I’m afraid.  I have established a working relationship with several local firms.  They are directly involved in making parts for industry.

My orders are something of a distraction for them. I did ask them if they wanted me to publish their names and they do not, as they are not geared to dealing with private individuals especially overseas.

  5. Beautiful Geoff. Is that design one others could use?

Thanks.  I hoped it would turn out looking good.  Of course anyone can use that design.  We post here to share ideas.  The circular cooling holes over the tubes I have seen on several amps, Stax included.

  6. Many thanks for the picture Sam & Geoff.  Any chance you will be able to add a pair of XLR loop out on the back plate?  Love every aspect about this amp.  Your chassis work is super sweet.

It's possible but does Sam want one?

  7. That's very nice PICaudio you went to a lot of trouble on those.

I agree that using the remote shaft method is not as straightforward as it might seem.  I thought it would be good practice to keep the inputs and the mains switch at the back so did this with my Compact KGSShv.

I originally used 6mm aluminium tube for the shafts and made nylon bushes for the front panel.  To get a nice feel to the operation this has to be made well with shafts lining up accurately etc.

paradoxper demanded a different layout with big central attenuator so had to abandon this principle.    It is as much work to do the wiring as it is to make the remote operators work well.  I have not found any increase in noise by

wiring up to the front and the benefit for me is that the feel of a pot/attenuator mounted directly to a thick front panel is better.

I did find an extension kit on the internet which had brass connectors and a brass front panel bush. The rod was 6mm solid ally.

    EXT- KIT- 26 and 30

This is how my original build looked.  i still have those input pcbs lying around if anyone wants one

  8. Parts and layout looks a lot like a KGST (KGSSHV front end) with SiC replacing the tubes.....

Great looking development gentlemen, keeping the hobby electric.

I know it was comically named in the other KGSShv thread  but should it be KGSC, Carbon , or KGSiC (!)

    Well perhaps not KG sic.

  9. Looks great! What PSU did you use? Is there any sign of the heatsink fins raising the temperature of the PSU or transformer?

The board set is as the pcb GB. The overall amount of heat is the same, it is more easily dissipated.

On the mains switch; the RIMS was to get away from the separate little LED for a change, but still keep the advantage of a large, easily operated pushbutton.

And thank you for your kind comments.

  10. Very beautiful build Geoff. Eye catching aesthetics. Polished and modern look. I know it sounds great, asI have your boards.

That heat sink is giving me ideas... :)

Thanks for making your PCBs available to all. The KGST is spoiling me.

Thank you - I am pleased with it but I received help on the aesthetics, and the pcbs are not mine but Birgir and KG.  This hobby owes them a massive debt.

  11. My own design; 3mm anodised aluminium alloy panels, thick machined FP.  Knob turned by me, Ring illuminated mains switch by me.

My original design was a little more ordinary, the style was the input of www.incredibledesign.co.uk

  12. I have been running in my build and it sounds better than the first - really very pleased.

I put a heat-sink across the middle and bolted the current sources to that so it runs cooler.

  13. That's a lovely build chiguy, congrats. And a great set of photos too!

Glad you like the sound.  I must say I am really loving mine and while I'm at it, would like to say how I like the neat pcb layout Birgir did for us.   An amp of this quality for a reasonable price is a huge asset to the estat world.

PS If I may mention Linn are doing their 24 days of Christmas free HR download samples.
