  1. I'd still like to see a picture of the critter. I'm finishing up an external heater supply that can supply 2 x 7.5A of DC filament current and has a 6.3 and 12.6v switch, so I can have switch these supplies independently. I'm tentatively calling it "the bench warmer", for obvious reasons. I considered working in an external pass device to go even higher, but I'm not sure if it's needed... so, the question for Earl and Nate: What tubes have you run across with the most demanding heater requirements? I'd appreciate a heads up so I can decide about the pass device someone soon. I'm most interested in tubes that have high current requirements that don't have center tapped heaters, since in this case I'd use the lower current option, since I can.
  2. nope neither do. Probably Esoteric / TEAC you're thinking of.
  3. They come free of charge with the caps ........ (bad joke) anyways, those *are* the caps..
  4. nate, just to point something out... the Plitron transformers that Mikhail uses are potted / encapsulated, so what you see on top of the amp is the toroid itself, not a cover or something.
  5. I know this place where I can get a pallet of those for like two dollars each...
  6. honestly, I don't care what the guy does... it's magickjzs alright.
  7. The Plitron is still there sitting on the amp.. That's like a $350 trafo....and nuthin' but fo' sho'? I need to see pics of the psu..... time to pull this one out:
  8. well, notice the 1.99vrms on the *balanced* output, so not as much gain is required as you might think.
  9. that $$ Plitron is for show then, relegated to a bling heater supply? any pics of the psu? It's probably not AC, rectified and smoothed would be my guess.
  10. Muse / Kevin Halverson uses some other gadgetry in there as well. Check out that article I posted, near the end for the technical description... also, what does "best I can do" imply? That passive I/V sounded best with the 1704? I'd agree with this statement if so.
  11. I think now is the time to contact a builder. There are a million ways to go about this. I'd do something like a Twisted Pear DAC and use the Otto to allow you to toggle between the internal DAC, and a second input which could be from an external DAC. I think this is pretty nifty myself. If you use the Twisted Pear Joshua Tree for an attenuator, you have a ready and willing power supply for the DAC. Or, use a second secondary on the trafo for the JT to power another small PSU. Again, I'd start "interviewing" builders, and choose one you can trust and let them run with it.
  12. Vicki: Do you have any pics of the Singlepower external power supply unit, the jack and what not? This is purely for purposes. Looks like Mikhail is not using the DC power jacks any more (good move), as I assume this is for the tube heaters only?. Is the external psu just a standard power brick of sorts that's been reterminated with that Neutrik connector? Does the amp work without the external unit plugged in? Is there a voltage selector on the unit? Sorry for all the questions, this is the first time I've seen something like this on a Singlepower, so I'm geeking out about it
  13. Filburt/Pars: My Muse uses quad PCM1704+DF1704 with passive I/V. Here is one write-up with good measurements: http://www.museelectronics.com/HFN_Jan.pdf
  14. I thought they used passive I/V. Do you have any pics handy? I suppose I can crack the one open down the street and take a look.
  15. The current version is Mk3, as I know someone in town who just got a Mk3 back from Krell. Excellent customer support, at least in his case. Amazing sounding player, IMHO.
  16. found a review for you: Krell SACD Standard "Mark II": Impressions & Review. Pics! - SH Forums
  17. why not just do a poll of what players people currently own, and then choose the most popular?
  18. oooh another recommend what you own thread... in which case, I cast my ballot for Muse Electronics, i.e. Model 12, Erato II, Polyhymnia if you need SACD...
  19. are hi-rez formats of interest, or would a red book only player suffice? Any interest in a transport and DAC combination?
  20. eek... the Mac geeks are descending I understand Apple is pretty serious about this, but then so are they about security and I'm on the phone with them *weekly* about new vulns in their software I'd be interested to see some measurements myself.
  21. sure about that? http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=1484189#post1484189
  22. grawk: I'd strongly recommend something with a higher bias for the Koss. If you find a SRD-7 I'd consider doing the modification for you, as it would give me a chance to design a little board that might fit in there for future retrofits. Spritzer: I'd be interested in the cost on those transformers, at least.
  23. Spritzer: any recommendation on cheap trafos for the DIY option?
  24. yeah, they shipped my order incomplete, as the lead time for the r-core is like 2-4 weeks... for me for you.
  25. K240S is what he has currently. Will those velour pads fit, despite the ominous warning on Headroom?
