I trust you were wearing your lumberjack jacket at the time.

I was wearing a flannel shirt.  I got scratched more than my watch did, I'm sure. It was hot as fuck, too, so the flannel shirt didn't appreciate it.

Wabi Sabi.  I used to get irritated when my knives got scratched.  What's the fucking point of having them if they don't get used for the intended use?  I finally realized what Steve Jobs realized a long time ago.  I wish I had a ground up iPod. It would be honest. Perfect looking backpacking boots just means you haven't been backpacking.  That ultra thin JLC is scratched up.  I wore it, and I scratched it up.

I fix a lot of shit and work on cars/bikes/boats/houses and it's nice to have a watch you don't mind getting scratched etc for those times when you know you're going to be a doing aforementioned things most of the day.

    I haven't worn a jacket out in 6 months.

if a tool watch can't take all of that, it's not a tool watch. No matter how expensive.  I chopped wood wearing my pre-moon Speedy, last weekend.  Did I scratch it?  Probably.  We all die, and every mechanical device breaks down.  We only have the wear to show for it.

  3. I don't really believe in beaters. If you are worried about being robbed, just don't wear a watch. I wouldn't wear that on a "night on the town." Nights on the town imply a jacket, for me, at minimum, so I wear my ultra thin JLC.

  4. I think I might have whiplash.  My neck didn't start hurting until after I dug a spare TV antenna out for my 90 year old neighbor across the hall, when she broke hers.  I'm ashamed that I did think, briefly, to just tell her her TV was broken, since I'm sick of hearing ABC at 110 decibels every night, but I didn't. When she had a medical emergency, last month, she gave my info as her son (she has family, family that she has given every ounce of herself and finances to supporting, so that should say something about what she has gotten in return), so I guess I'm just being familial.

My neck is killing me now, though.

  5. My mother forgetting how to use her email = me rear ended.  No superficial damage, but I'm on the phone with my insurance company, now.  The other driver literally threw his paper insurance card at me and drove off, after we determined that nobody was injured.

Lance is fencing Russian fencers this week and he will fence two Korean national team fencers next week along with having private coaching with the Russian and Italian coaches.

Fun times, I just hope it makes a difference in Salt Lake City. On the plus side I am getting much better at ordering food and wine in Italian.

How many foils are you going to go through?  And I don't think ordering in Italian is going to held in Salt Late.

+1 to the good luck wishes!  Try to imagine a scenario where they may be in need of a solution, and propose options.....with the way kids are roaming the interwebz, I'm sure network security and malware are a big to-do.....

You're right: death squads.  I'll keep that in my pocket. :)

  8. I set up a phone interview for a job I badly want, for next Wednesday. University IT director position, 5 minute commute, excellent pay and benefits. and for once it's a job where people on my reference list are known quantities, and respected ones.   I applied Tuesday, so it seems that they are moving fairly quickly.

  9. Because I know what the CD of the base and R versions is, Jim.  it's published, and easily searchable. Unless you think Honda has magic that no other car company has, a mere comparison and look at construction can only lead to one logical conclusion.  If you do think they have magic, well, it doesn't seem to be helping them much in F1.

I'm out on this topic.  The car is a dog, there is a reason it's "limited" here in the US, and the first owners are morons who will pay 25-50% over MSRP for an ugly Civic.

Downforce depends on the Cl (Coefficient of Lift) and drag depends on Cd (Coefficient of Drag), which are not the same thing. The Cd and Cl for an automobile depends upon the entire automobile, not just the airfoil, which is what your formula is looking at. What you really want is for the airfoil to provide significant lift (negative in this case) while increasing drag as little as possible. You may be wondering how I know this and it is because birds fly and people (i.e. grad students) study that shit.

I'm aware of all of that (not the shit part).  The point is that the giant wing on the back of the Civic R adds almost nothing to the base car CD.  It does nothing.  It's impossible for an effective wing of that size to add nearly no drag.  The fact that the wing is hollow plastic and bounces when you touch it says everything: it was not made to actually handle aerodynamic forces.  A hollow plastic wing would be torn off very quickly, if it actually added downforce.  An effective aerodynamic element would require significant stiffness.  We don't live in an ideal world, Jim.

It's possible to generate the same downforce at a given speed with lower drag.

I'd like to see the math on that. Especially when all the competitors are .1 above the Civic.

it's for a specific airfoil, but downforce and drag seem to be rather related... almost like diverting air causes some kind of resistance to the atmosphere.  I don't think the base Civic is incredibly more aerodynamic than the base Focus, Golf, or whatever-it-is-that-Subaru-makes.
