The baddest boy on the block...

I think they should rename the company to Boner Amps, instead of Boulder Amps. And just a mere $205,000 per pair.

    That's a good one!

Boulder amplifiers visually are somewhat intimidating in real life.

trying out the RAAL tweeters in the new rig.

No big surprise but they are a bit to polite when crossed over at 2800hz, compared to the Horn tweeters. (and 10db less efficient than the mids)

It plays better higher up in frequency, but i guess it's better to go with a horn tweeter and separate supertweeter crossed over at 10K to retain the aggressive growl of the horns.

    Fun experiment though :)

RAAL ribbons are very good. Very subtle, smooth and easygoing, with great decay, not shouty at all.

Fugly, these are doing it for me in my small living room.

Altec 890C Bolero with a modern CD horn and B&C compression driver on top, replacing the weenie stock tweeter horn. Crossover based on the Econowave projects online, which was originally based on the Altec 19 crossover.

The bass is handled by the stock 10” woofer and passive radiator pair. The 406 10” woofer is really unique, with the same voice coil and massive ALNICO motor as the 12” Altec 414. Paper cone with a “curvilinear” profile, gives around a 96dB sensitivity and is cleanly crossed over at 2kHz. With a raw woofer measured Fs of 27Hz, the woofer/radiator easily extends to below low E, 41Hz in room.

Sounds BIG like the Altec M19 with a similar old movie theater Technicolor sound, but with an extended and cleaner HF. Plenty of SPL for movies and music.

But really fugly, definately not Porn-worthy.

Fugly or not, it has to sound impressively nonetheless.

Maybe not Speaker Porn these days, but back In the day these were pretty hawt.

    Altec Model 19. Woofer: 15” 416  , Mid/high compression driver: 802 , Sectoral horn: 811

Very efficient: rated 104dB @ 4 foot sensitivity. Sound great with single watt SETs, but will still take 175 watts continuous.

Too large for my current living room, been stored in my garage for years. Fired them up today....my neighbors were not amused.

Yup, there's something oddly magnetic about those vintage Altecs. Paper down below, quality compression driver up top, crazy sensitivity... Yeah, it'll do :D

Yep, he bought a HE-1, and yet excessively quibbled about the cost of getting a Stax SR-009 and KG designed amp saying that you didn't need that level of performance at the price.

This draws the obvious conclusion that he gets his lesser level of performsnce at a far greater price..

The logic is truly revelational.........

Yes, he wasn't too consistent. But then again, his vids gather rather bad score, so yeah...

At our place you constantly have 5-6C and A LOT of rain, which is ridiculous. 20 years ago there was no December without snow and ~ -5C and now this.

If you're nostalgic, real estate is cheap in the frozen wasteland where I live.

Not desperate for freezing cold, but some snow wouldn't hurt in December. Just for the sake of showing kids how it actually looks like.

Not too much snow on the ground yet, but it's pretty painful to spend time outdoors right now.e801787e727f0d9398cb96090c99458f.jpg

Damn, that's cold! Temperatures Western EU can only dream about.

Nahhh it's still fugly as all shit.  Worse than that, the shell doesn't protect the fragile drivers which is kinda its main role...

Aww, but that's a subjective thing to say. I somewhat dig it, nowhere near as much as 009 though. Agreed on the shell.

Just joined a MassDrop order for Dekoni HD800 earpads.

It was $49 this morning so it may go down a little.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with these but considering the Amazon price is $80 for the Senn replacements, I'll give 'em a shot.
