Speaking of which, seeing reports in various forums of the Lyr 3 killing headphones. Have you peeked inside one? If so, any idea what's up?

Ok, the T4 is both gorgeous and interesting. I think @dsavitsk needs to sod off with all this temptation. Given his track record, I'd love to hear this (though I'm unlikely to see one kicking about in the UK).

Damn that Father Benny Cake...

I feel like some decent Lambdas and a sensible amp would kill them, even- without the massive downside of having to use their DAC. $5k is a lot to ask for something that compromised.
-
At least you could hear them. I heard them at a show hall a couple of years ago, and they didn't have enough gain to let me hear much over the gentle background hubub- a little bit of mid, and that was it. I'm afraid that the salesman* demoing them are a little hurt by my refusal to effusively praise them, because I couldn't hear a bloody thing (and I am not someone who needs or even enjoys high volumes). I was probably also too obviously horrified with the mandatory DAC/DSP as well. I just ended up wondering why anyone would want such a thing, thanking him, and beating a hasty retreat. *..and he was a salesman, I asked a couple of mildly technical questions, and he blanched visibly.

Happy birthday Birgir, may your shadow never grow less! My little amp sends regards ? (Yeah, I know, what has two thumbs and needs to dust more often?)

Surely the little wooden stand and headphone condom are part of the masonic garb, without which you're not really a member of Stax Club? I'm pretty sure that if you have those, even the headphones are optional.

I particularly like the Stratus with the strategically taped-over name. Legit as fuck.

@mikeymad - that's seriously.. tasteful. Sounds like a Tarantino soundtrack waiting to happen. It's really interesting how the band members try not to step on each others' toes, impressive intra-band civility. I don't know what I feel about it, but I couldn't stop listening, anyway.

Thanks for checking, I may well have to try that, then @Rossliew - I am really happy with the Octave 2, actually. It's an obvious upgrade from an SRM-313, at least. It's clean, linear and commits no major sins- no obvious rolloff, no smoothing of details, no unusually harsh treble. It really does sound like it has a much firmer grip on the drivers and brooks no argument- never sounds like it's struggling. Obviously, build quality is excellent. I drive it balanced from a Gungir multibit normally, but it worked nicely with an SE DAC and some adapters too as needed. If you are looking to drive Lambdas and don't want to spend a fortune, it's a nice option. I'm not sure I would try to drive SR-007 or upwards from it though. I'm sure it'd work, but cans like that deserve a slightly more elaborate amp. I'd describe it as a modestly-priced amp that outperforms its price and size by a decent margin. Very pleasant listening- a touch warm, lots of detail, nothing harsh or unpleasant and tonality is satisfyingly sane. I'm quite happy with my chain, not TOTL anything, but remarkable bang-for-buck. You could pay a lot more and get a lot less.

Oh, that'd be great, thanks. I suspected you'd have all the bits available. The clamp is my only real objection right now- though I am sure I could learn to live with it if necessary. Otherwise, it all sounds surprisingly decent. I'm going GEN5 Gungir Multibit->Octave 2->L300LE at the moment, which seems to be a combo that punches well above its weight. Not TOTL anything, but surprisingly capable together- all solid components. The 300LE sound a tad midbassy, but that's forgiveable for a habitual HD650 user.

That's useful to know. https://www.electromod.co.uk/stax/headband/complete-headband-l500-and700/ ..says "The L300 is slightly different and will ONLY fit the L300", but what about the other way around? Do you have an L700 headband handy- and if so, any chance of checking if it fits the 300? (unless you know offhand)
-
The main thing that I noticed about the SRM L-300 Limited is that they have a lethal clamp. I'm guessing that this is the same as the standard L300- quite narrow. The cups press quite hard against the sides of my head. @spritzer - you're also "cranially well-endowed" as I recall too and probably notice these things. Do you know if the L700 headband is any better? I'm wondering if there's any mileage in swapping the headband if so.

Ah, thanks Jim. For some reason, I didn't even bother searching. I'm blaming the fact that it's late. Seawolf, it's not really a review- it's a Lego site- one that tends to conclude that "everything is awesome" in return for free stuff. There are loads of them out there, it's a minefield.

So, what the hell is the "VE Enterprise E Lite" in this... peerless "review"? https://headfonics.com/2018/05/mrspeakers-voce-review/ Has he really been running SR-007mk2 from an Aliexpress special?

Back atcha with an album title- "No-one Cares About Your Creative Hub So Get Your Fuckin’ Hedge Cut":

Thanks, Dusty-san, listening links are always nice for the hard of being arsed. I think I know someone who will love that album, so passing on the link. Meanwhile:

Rip them all to a NAS, stored losslessly (e.g. FLAC). Use a small network streamer to feed your DAC. (I used EAC, as it's safer and more reliable with errors than dbpoweramp, and is completely free). Pack CDs away in air-tight plastic storage crates, with sachets of silica gel to prevent mould. Stack crates out of the way in a cupboard or something. I should really do that last one, I still have too many CDs lying about.
