I would recommend something powerful so as a baseline, the KGSSHV or the KGST.  Audeze made these intentionally inefficient so they need plenty of clean power to behave.

As for the LTA Z10e, I would never recommend that thing.  Kevin and I are actually looking for one to tear apart as there are pretty much no internal pics and based on their own comments, it is all kinds of stupid.  What little snippets I found was the 300V max EL84's driven at 700V so you have all the same issues as Stax do in their amps, massive compression.  If the Zotl is actually connected to the tubes while in electrostatic operation, then that is a huge issue as well.  EL84's are the same as 300B's, they should never be used in electrostatic amps.  Simply not suitable.

Turns out that Audeze is going to be demoing the CRBN at CanJam with "a Mjolnir amp" and the LTA Z10e.

Edit: They might actually be deciding between the two, the wording isn't clear to me.

  2. I sold my HD650s a little while ago and now I kind of regret it. I'm thinking of picking up another pair of 650s or 6XXs, but there are rumors that the newer ones that are assembled in Romania are somewhat different than the made-in-Ireland sets. However, Sennheiser has stated on the Drop website in this post:

The HD 6xx pads are made in Germany, drivers are made and matched in pairs in Ireland, the enclosure and final assembly is in our factory in Romania.

They also said in this post:

FYI, the difference between old and new is that the enclosure (injection molded) and final assembly are performed in Romania... the transducers (drivers) have always been made and carefully matched in pairs in our Ireland factory. The injection mold tooling is the same we've used since 1997!

Does anyone have any direct experience comparing older and newer HD650s and/or HD6XXs?

  3. I agree with your assessment about the Utopias and the GL2, catscratch. I'm really enjoying the pairing and I think I'll park here for a while in terms of gear.

I ended up buying the Astrodyne a while ago to tide me over until the HeadAmp LPS arrived, and while the Astrodyne is an improvement over the stock switcher, the LPS is much better than the Astrodyne. The Astrodyne smoothed out the edges a bit and improved the bass response, but it sounded kind of compressed and distant, which the LPS completely solves.

From my experience with my departed HE 4XX, they need it. Much prefer my modded T50RPs (Mk I). If you need to EQ phones, my thought has always been you have the wrong phones...

Why's that? EQing—whether through hardware or software—is relatively simple. It seems to provide a way to modify the frequency response of headphones that are technically competent but sonically unbalanced. For example, I like many of the attributes of the Koss ESP/95X, but they certainly benefit from a bit of EQ (in my opinion). And I don't use EQ on my Utopias, but that would seem to be a possible solution for many HCers that want to tame their treble and boost the bass a bit.

  5. Also, I just looked in the discussion thread for the Massdrop x Focal Elex and I noticed that some people were complaining about driver failures. One of the employees posted this update recently:

We randomly pulled a sample unit from the latest batch from Focal and tested to make sure it falls within specifications.  First the headphone was tested to ensure both drivers were operational by using  a mixture of music and sine sweeps to test for any unnatural resonances in the drivers and the headphone frame.

This makes me think that some Elex headphones were also wired incorrectly, causing them to have the same reverberation that I was hearing with the Utopias.

  6. Just got my repaired Utopias back—both drivers were replaced and now they sound a bit different than they did before. Previously, they had a strange reverberation to the sound, which was especially noticeable in the bass. I've been in touch with the people I bought them from and apparently some recently manufactured Utopias were wired incorrectly, causing them to have the strange reverberation and making them more likely to fail. I thought that was just the way that Utopias sounded and I got used to it, but I definitely prefer them without that "feature".
