Seems more elegant and future-proof to me than buying an expensive dedicated streamer box which will become obsolete when Tidal goes out of business.

Uh, that statement makes no sense to me and is misleading.  I don't use any internet streaming services.  That's not what a network streamer is primarily for, they are to stream your media to a DAC and avoid having another PC with a USB connection to your DAC.  Sure, most of them do Tidal, but that's not why they were created.

Good to see you around! What other streamer are you using? Also trying to understand the state of the market a bit better.

Good to be seen (: I have a sonore signature rendu.  No USB (because I never liked my system enough with USB in the chain).  It's ethernet in and BNC or i2s out.  I don't do DSD so don't care about that. All my music is on a synology NAS.

blubliss, I thought you had a SinglePower ES-1 that had been modified to work properly?

I have an ES-2 which does work and has been modified but not in the manner presented here. The thing is it just sits unused.  I even offered it to someone for free pickup and he never came.

Andy thanks! Every once and a while I feel like the yggy has some hardness is the treble but other than that I love it.

Yes, I feel the same way at times.  The Holo can be a little easier to listen to sometimes, but that little bit of softness may be annoying over time. For instance, on one CSN song (49 bye byes) which is not a great recording, the extra clarity of the Yggy reallly helped.

Did you listen to the Holo from I2S just out of curiousity? I was thinking of heading over to the dac shootout in DC on Sunday. They are pitting the holo against the yggy and the codex.

Yes, it was via i2s from my Sonore Signature Rendu, very nice streamer with no USB involved.  The Holo may be a bit sweeter but that costs some detail and soundstage.  I will say they are very close if volume matched, which is difficult since the output (vrms?) from the XLRs of the Holo and Yggy is different.  I didn't try DSD and only listened in NOS mode. The Yggy was hooked up to the same source via spdif and i had a nice switch to go between the Holo and Yggy, only trouble was volume matching.

I would most likely choose the Yggy between the two, especially since it's American made.  The Holo is worth a listen.

Would love to hear what you think numbers.

  6. Doug was explaining to us at this recent meet but all I heard was, this stuff is gonna sound really bitchin' blah, blah, blah, no caps, blah, blah, simple design, blah, blah, L-3 has a really cool, cheap Russian tube, blah, blah, we made triodes out of transistors in the DSHA 3 (?), blah, blah, blah, L-3 will have more power, blah.

The Utopias sound awesome with the L-2, slightly better (?) than the Dynahi. The phones can be a little bright.

  7. @s_r Did you try that specific adjustment method I mentioned?  From Kerry: 6.55V at 22k resistor using 10k pots while keeping 2k centered, then fine tune with 2k.  It is different from the original adjustment methods.  I do remember having the experience you mentioned, of the adjustments doing nothing for the noise, until I used this other method.
