1. Listening is Subjective (Personal opinion)

Measuring is Objective (Standard units of measure)

Just like motherhood and apple pie ;D

that and the fact that many don't even know what objective means.... when I tried to explain the concept I always get comments like "i heard the difference, so it's objective" or "people are hearing the difference, so it must be objective."

The idea that what you hear is the result of your brain's processing of the information that you have received from your body (thus highly affected by your personal experience/belief and is highly subjective) is way too complicated and sophisticated for many.

  2. So what in your opinion would be "just the right amplification" for the T1's?

The T1's actually sounded great with just the right amplification, but "just the right amplification" required a lot of tweaking. With any other amp, they were pretty blah.

I should note that I agree with the others - the various DT880/990/T1 can sound quite nice with the right amp(s) but it does require a bit of effort to dial everything in.

  3. Wasn't the DT-48 developed for use out in the field in very poor conditions?

Primarily for monitoring voice and other general sounds for radio and film on portable analogue tape recorders?

They are pretty indestructible, even the diaphragms are aluminium. I don't think they were really intended for high quality monitoring in a studio or music for that matter.

:headcase: on the 600 love :ian: Beyers suck. Period. All of them. Period. From the once vintage holy grail DT-48 to the superuberduper T1, one of the biggest overpriced POS I've had the dubious pleasure of listening. However I can understand why some people likes them. Horses for courses.

  5. Yeh the HD 600's are a bit livelier than the HD650's and for me have a good overall balance for a dynamic.

I like the DT880's as they are a bit more refined and airier at the top end but not so much bass impact. It comes down to personal preference,

The other dynamic I rate against the sennheisers are the ERGO model 2's. very similar sound signature but different presentation, similar to the Jecklin electrostat.

I'm not sure if these get exported to the US or that matter much outside Europe, but if you get the chance certainly worth a listen.

  6. You mean needs the touch of Yodah! Its not soldered but laser lanced

"return to vendor for repair" is not uncommon in guru-centric brands.

Singlepower had the same shit running. If the amp is soldered without being blessed by the guru it may not work properly again.

*guru may not be strictly the correct word. I have a shitty vocabulary.

  7. When this stuff gets hot it hardens and cracks. When really bad just falls off exposing the bare wire.

Probably as all the wires would have to be replaced as well. It's not obvious from the pics but all the wires are dirt cheap PVC crap and that combined with the tiny lands on the PCB's means all the heat from the iron enters the wire. This melts the insulation and the wires really need to be swapped out.

  8. So those poor sods outside the US who have bought Cavalli amps are really going to be ecstatic. The cost and time to ship it back half way across the world will be real fun.

They have some dealers too so do the dealers ship everything to Cavalli rather than repair in house?

My amplifiers are not intended to be serviced by third party members or DIYers. Registered dealers and my assembly house will have no problem returning the normal function of the amplifier. In HV amps if one part fails there is sometimes other damage. In order to return an amplifier to its original condition, if necessary, the entire board will be replaced. I call this customer service.

In so many words....sounds like you're spot on KG :)

  9. You really need to listen to a set of these, the ERGO model 2's. IMHO quite competitive to the HD600/650's

    ergo1.jpg

I think the HD 650 gets a bad rap. Maybe I'm not thinking widely enough, but other than the HD800 and LCD3 (when working well), I think it's the best headphone out there.

'Course the latest Thunderpants I've hear might have beat it. Got a pair from his group buy coming in for measure nad listen. Maybe I'll sneak in a review, too.

  10. I meant aesthetics wise it looks kind of plain jane. No offense or anything it's got the plain jane look similar to the ALO Studio 6. I want more bling like BHSE level. I do own and like the low-end Jonokuchi so I don't have anything against Pete Millet's designs/amps.

    I would agree

However; I would not call the BHSE bling as such, as it uses uses materials in a way which makes it look solid, well finished, there has been considerable thought given to to overall design and attention to detail.

The EAR HP4 is much more "Blingy" with all the polished chrome and gold plated knobs

  11. I'd argue that the amp in question is attractive.

Well as they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

Personally I thinks its butt ugly given it costs $5,000.

Would not get SWMBO approval in most houses ;D

Perhaps a perforated metal cage over the top to cover it up like a power amp might be an improvement?

  12. Well, Currawong sent me an email stating he deleted certain posts including mine.

I told him I was very concerned headfi would favor Mr Cavallis interest over his customers.

I wonder how much Cavalli pays them on sponsorship fees.

You have to consider Head-Fi as a any other commercial site now due to the various commercial interests.

It will act to protect those interests and sponsors so free open discussion is no longer possible like here.

There was a similar suppression of problems with some shitt amplifiers a while ago where known problems were deleted and members exposing the situation were banned.

  13. Personally i've found the 009 much more sensative to the quality of the source than the amplifier. The Omega and 007 needs oodles of power as we all know to really come to life. Many of the hyper detailed DAC's tend to exagerate the the 9's top end which can make them sound a bit relentless over an hour or so.

I still love my 007 Mk1's but the 9's just dig up even more nuances from within the timbre of the intruments, which is particularly noticable when listening to high rez. The texture in the bass is simply amazing.

... Well the 009s certainly have an effect on my bank balance.
Having real difficulties, the 009 hasn't won me over. It does certain things better for the sacrifice of others, the 007 on the other hand seems more even keeled across a wider genre.
Hands down the 009s is my choice for classical, I'll give it that...

  15. Presume its an active rather than passive equaliser?

Do you find it lowers the overall sound quality a little with all that additional electronics in the way?

Try adding a notch filter at 3.5Khz and 14Khz as well.

They are somewhat interactive, but once you know the frequencies to use its just a matter of getting the amplitudes.

Yes, it does take a bunch of time to get it dialed in, but when you get it right its realllly cool.

  16. I've had my 800's getting on for a couple of years now. I have found them the most difficult and problematic headphone I have ever owned and have forced me to keep re-evaluating my source (DAC) and amplifier to a point where their undoubted qualities can be enjoyed.

I have recently moved them to balanced drive and this has given them much greater frequency extension, particularly the bass, greater overall body and a much more coherent sound stage. I think they were just made for balanced drive which is presumably why both of Sennheisers amplifiers for the HD800 are balanced.

I have found them VERY amp picky and we have lots of theories about this, but so far I don't think we fully understand their ideal requirements. Tyll loves the single ended EPC audio L-2 pairing and I would love to hear this and compare it with my current favourite the Headroom BUDA, but this is not likely to happen anytime soon, unless Tyll decides to make the comparison for himself. :dan:

I have lived with the HD800 for a while now. I still like them very much but I can say that they do not necessarily replace my HD600s. I spent a little time comparing the two last night. The HD600 is undeniably a classic headphone and I think the HD800 compliments it rather nicely. There is a lot of talk about the peakiness of the HD800 is some (I can't remember which ) section of the bandwidth. I am not sure about that. Compared to the HD600, the HD800 sounds flat as a strap in terms of frequency response. They have treble sparkle, but they also have deep bass. It's just a lot of everything and in pretty even doses as far as I can hear. On the other hand, I found the HD600 a bit more boosty in the upper mids. This quality makes them "more fun" to me. A bit more "passionate" and "emotional." I know these words don't mean anything but there were moments when I was grabbed a little more emotionally by the music with the HD600. The HD800 is an intellectually appealing headphone because of its absolutely incredible resolution and the very wide, open soundstage. I enjoy high resolution and there is plenty of emotion in the HD800 for me, probably because my front end gear is, if I do say so myself, ridiculously great. But I think the HD800 could easily find itself in the boring category without a proper front end. But the reason for this post, really, is to say that I also really love my HD600s and I will probably continue listening to them as much as any other headphone I own.

  17. Not anything to do with the first three letters being

KGBH Hybrid amplifier for electrostatic headphones Kevin Gilmore

Must be sponsored by the Russian government

Looks 80's retro with all that wood but construction looks good but no pricing

So, who wants to see the Russian Blue Hawaii? :)

    http://fluxlab-acoustics.com/Products/11

Looks kinda nice but they are using the old parts so sourcing them must be an utter pain.

  18. I have spent more time and money on trying to make the HD800 listenable than would normally be justified only because it has such potential.

Unfortunately I've not, or likely to have the opportunity to listen to your L-2, but it must be pretty damn good given Tyll's comments. However; I do have a feeling the HD800 really performs at its best when driven balanced. Is there any possibility of you developing a balanced version of the L-2?

The Z out on both the L-2 and DSHA-1 on the high setting is ~40 Ohms. On the low setting, it is lower, ~10 Ohms for each. Much of this comes from the copper resistance in the transformers.

Adding series resistance on the low setting will make both sound worse. This is because the transformers only have so much inductance. Beyond a certain point, the load has too high of an impedance for this inductance. Adding the series resistance will create a mismatch and you'll lose bass, and just muck thing up.
