  1. you can get pretty damn good speakers for that money, as i'm finding out.

Indeed, I've recently purchased a pair of Triangle Stratos Luna 260 speakers (93 dB/W/m). At $2400 they were a bargain. They're the most detailed dynamic speakers I've ever heard with a very flat bass response but also with a treble spike from 14-20 kHz. I will try to drive them directly from my SP amp when I receive it. At my low listening levels, it will have plenty of power (72 dB(A) at listening position is borderline uncomfortable to me).

  2. I believe he generally sets up preamp outputs so when a headphone is plugged in the preamp outputs are muted. So, he drives both off the output stage .... but not simultaneously.

That's the norm, yes. The amp he's building for me will feed the preamp outs all the time. This won't affect the performance at all, Mikhail assured me, since the preamp out will only handle very easy loads.

It's more of a novelty than anything, but it would allow me to drive a pair of open headphones combined with a low-crossover sub for the deep rumbling if watching a movie or listening to organs (I like to feel the deep rumbling in my guts).

Yeah, you heard me. Some people want the option to add a woofer to their headphone system. O0

  3. you guys post SO SLOW. gimme fiction!

  4. It's still loose but I suspect Alex was right: the noise was not serious (have yet to locate appropriate tool to verify). The DAC sounds great but requires an external amp (currently using my M-cubed). It has responded favorably to power regeneration and the various inputs do sound slightly different (compared USB, AES/XLR, SPDIF & TOSLINK via RME Digi 96/8 PAD). I wish I still had the DAC1 for comparison sake or knew someone with a Lavry DA10. For that matter I wish we had more time at the National Meet and I wasn't so afraid about potentially damaging Alex's gear! ;) Right now I'm enjoying the DA53 with the various 'phones at my disposal (W11JPN, MS-Pro, RS-1, K1000, DT880 v2006, K701 & K271). Any Bay Area 'phone nut with a GS-1000 is welcome - I never had much opportunity to compare GS-1000 with other woody Grados at the Meet. Have you returned from Japan, Alex?

So which input option do you prefer, and why?

  5. To me, the bass isn't like warm smooth milk chocolate, like the W10VTG is. it's more like sharp dark chocolate. don't worry, it's not molasses. but i wouldn't call it bright. sharp maybe, but not bright.

I like sharp dark chocolate, it's my favorite. How would you characterize the L3000 bass in terms of chocolate? :P
