  1. But computerpro3 said his Maestrobated SHA-Gold and RS-1 kept up with the Zana Deux and a few other high end amps. How true that is I have no idea, but I'm willing to bet meet conditions came into play and favored his amp/his preferences/experience or lack of.

Uh, yeah, I'd have to agree that he probably hasn't spent any significant time comparing the Melos to anything else.
  2. I haven't heard the Melos but foo_me just got one recently and he didn't like it at all... decent tone he said but not resolving at all and totally forgiving. He actually still liked hd600s better with it than Grados. Any rate, its getting sold I believe.

You know it's funny, I had a chance to try a Melos in my rig at the last Boston Meet and I came away pretty nonplussed. I mean for $300 to $400 it's probably a fine amp but I guess I just didn't get any of the magic that some folks do and could never see spending $1000 on a completely modded one. Quite frankly, I liked my uber-Millett considerably more with Grados, car radio tubes and all.

  3. So I'd say it's more like British Buffy meets Charmed with a little Bewitched thrown in. There's very little "teh funneh" thrown in -- at least, not out-and-out Joss Whedon funny, more understated "Dr. Who" funny.

    To synopsize: a qualified thumbs-up.

You had me at Buffy, downloading Season 1 now. Gotta find something since those cocksuckers canceled Deadwood.
  4. P.S. The extreme isn't anything more than the Wheatfiled, which is nothing more than the VanWaarde (with a 6SN7 input tube)

Sort of, but the Wheatfield uses a tube rectified power supply, which I don't think any Extreme does and the Extreme runs parallel output tubes (as you know) so it drives low-ohm loads better but requires matched tubes. One more thing, the Wheatfield has enough current capacity to run some serious output tubes like the 6528A, I'm not sure the Extreme can handle that.

  5. i can't believe that it takes that long to send a PM or edit a thread.

Honestly Jacob, given the amount of shit that they have to sift through and how few mods there are that are active at all I'm not all that surprised. Head-Fi could use 4x the number of mods especially considering that there's a good number that don't log on hardly at all any more.
  6. Nate, I can't disagree with you. There are plenty that get away with shit. I've caught some and done something about it. Again, I've never said that there aren't legitimate grievances. We do the best we can, with the time we have and don't get everything right. I don't have the answers to all the questions. I wish I did. I can't tell you how many times I've caught something and was going to do something about only to have life get in the way and then forget about it.

I can understand that, and understand that it's only the admins (there are only 2, right) that can apply the MOT tag but man, I have to tell you, it makes all of you look bad when that stuff goes unchecked. And it'd be one thing if it was just that it took a little while for the changes to be put into effect but we're going on a period of years, during which other MOT's have been dealt with, and still these characters walk around like they own the place.

Seriously, I'm surprised that more sponsors haven't pulled out as a result of it.

  7. Same answer, I can't.

But you do have direct access (through the mod forum) to the people who can, right? If tomb can get noticed after selling 3 amps (for the cost of basically the parts, BTW) then what about at LEAST a half dozen folks at head-fi selling cables, amps, acting as manufacturer's reps, etc, that don't even try to hide it because for whatever reason they basically skate scot-free. As someone who has been repeatedly accused of being an MOT despite probably donating about $10,000 worth of my time, parts, and so on this drives me up a wall and undermines the very core of any debate on that site. There's not even a hint of impartiality on some folks part. Think of it this way, from my perspective it looks like you guys have the gun and constantly chose to ignore the guy raping the girl in the alley and shoot the guy j-walking who was just trying to keep an old lady from getting hit by a car. :-\

  8. Ideas on price? Ide rather not spend more than $50 or so. I don't buy that there will be any improvement when I am just using it as a transport. I just really need a second psu for it to keep in my other room.

I'd think that a TREAD-wallwart combo could be done for under $50. The TREAD itself (minus case) is ~$20 in parts, the wallwart another $5 to $10, the rest, completely variable. The big thing is making sure that it's ok for the 1A current requirement.
  9. Yeah, if it's an environmental variable like that I just don't think that full sized cans are going to cut it. If I were you I'd look into either custom IEMs or something that fits your ears better than the ER4Ps, assuming that comfort is the issue. I know that my ears hate the tri-flanges any more but can tolerate the foamies for hours. Weird since I used to wear the tri-flanges exclusively. I really wish Westone would get their act together and release their new universal so they can get started on the custom version. Seems to me that there's a pretty big hole in the sub $500 custom IEM range. I can't get myself to take a flier on the live-wires for some reason.

  10. alright, i know this is an old thread, but i've become interested in getting some deep woodies for my HD580's because I need the isolation. so did you end up getting a pair of deep ones PFK?

How much isolation do you need? It always stuck me as a pretty bad idea to change the fundamental characteristics of a can (open to closed). I'm not saying that what other have experienced isn't a good change, only that for the cost of modifying the Senns you could buy another set of headphones entirely. And seriously, if closed/isolated is what you need the only thing that I've found that offers any real isolation is IEMs. Everything else seems to be in the 10db reduction category, which just doesn't cut it for isolation in my book. However, if what you need is just to limit sound leakage then that's a different story all together.
  11. but admitting your wrong in the same thread may not make you feel better but it will show who you REALLY ARE...

If it wasn't for the fact that you routinely do shit like this billy (as I said several pages ago) I might actually believe that you were sorry. Instead, what I'm left with is the feeling that you felt like you got caught and tried to save face.
  12. Oh *yawn* billy, your act is getting seriously tired. You come in, stir up whatever shit you can, then apologize and pretend you never meant it or were joking, blah, blah, give me a friggen break. If you think a group of like minded individuals qualify as a clique I think you need to go back and do some more research, there's quite a few of us that disagree about many things and the truly great thing is that we're not afraid to discuss it and not have to agree about it.
