  1. I am Voltron, and I approve of this message. He is playing in Oakland this week with Hutchinson on drums and Matt Penman, not on the record but somebody who played with Joshua in the SF Jazz Collective. I wish I hadn't gone to the disappointing Nels Cline gig the other night and I wish Brian Blade was on drums, but I still might try to sneak in one set anyway.
  2. John Coltrane -- Ascension (Vinyl)
  3. Slackers and cheapskates! In 5 posts you guys haven't bought as many CDs as the Baguette puts up in a 1 single post!
  4. Duke Ellington & John Coltrane (Vinyl) Charles Mingus -- Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus (Vinyl)
  5. Daniel Weiss himself confirmed that the ADC2 FW can serve as a Firewire to AES/EBU interface so that answers my question pretty definitively. Of course, the DAC1 mk2 and ADC2 combination is a massive amount of overkill on what I want to accomplish -- especially on the A/D side -- but it could work with a Mac Mini or Macbook or whatever without a PCIe card being needed.
  6. Well, just to keep it interesting, I have another iron in the fire[wire]. http://www.head-case.org/forums/uploads/emoticons/default_rolleyes.gif' alt=''> I spoke to the maker of the Amarra music server. They are getting ready to release their hardware and software packages next week, and the hardware model would wrap up everything I am looking for in one slim single-rack-unit device. Their Model 4 is connected to the Mac by FireWire, has 24/192 A/D converters with adjustable gain on the analog input, has 24/192 D/A converters, and integrates with iTunes for all hi-rez input and output. The Amarra software can also be purchased separately, and will support some third party products like Lynx cards, Weiss dacs, and maybe some others. Amarra is working on a deal to be bundled with Weiss hardware products in a special custom configuration. I am going to try to visit Amarra next week, and the guy I spoke to from the company putting it out, Sonic Studio, was really great and happens to live down the street from my house in Mayberry.
  7. My understanding was that if you have an older 802.11b/g AE or laptop using an 802.11n network then the Airport defaults down to the lower setting for ALL devices on the network and therefore defeats the faster potential of the new devices. Is that correct grawk?
  8. My Brightest Diamond -- A Thousand Shark's Teeth
  9. I spoke to your friends at Vintage King today and will likely be getting some demos of the DAD and Weiss gear myself.
  10. My comment wasn't directed at any one person, but since you stopped posting on HF before Jude's HD800 thread started then it had nothing to do with you. Reks, your description above is exactly how a free return policy is supposed to work and I have no problem at all when it is offered and utilized in that fashion.
  11. Dinny- I say you beat up JP a bit on the price of his W2002s and buy a stock WA6 and your pops will be in heaven. The AT woodies in general is a great idea that already has been posted a couple times, although the ESW9 is too small and not sealed enough to my mind. The W1000 is a really nice way to start for someone who likes the warmer signature, although those W2002s are faster and really way better than I remember them. I also think that the HD-25 might be a good option but did he ever listen to yours before you sold them? Another option is finding a CD3000 but those are not easy to dredge up .

  13. Yeah, I was assuming that the playback could be simplified assuming I can get it all set up and configured properly but the needle-dropping angle still has me trying to figure out how to set levels and such. I am assuming the DADMan software is where it would happen and that is probably not bad, but the Weiss gear is more self-contained and has nice meters on the front, etc.
  14. Any thoughts on operation of the AX24 though? It seems like you have to everything from the computer so one goal of making this an easy way for my wife to be able to play something on the big rig may be defeated by that.
  15. Looking at that circle-jerk thread on HF, don't you think a lot of those people are thinking that the 30-day return policy is a free listen option?
  16. Thanks for the further input Nate, Dan and Todd. The Thecus units are what the Computer Audiophile guy promotes as the best solution. If you do this NAS bit or if you go the DroboShare route, do you also want to set up a separate network than the one doing internet duty in the house? I guess you need a Gigabit switch with the NAS setup, so the newer Airport Extremes can handle that duty, right?
  17. If the best you have heard is the K701 then the HD800 will seem like you have achieved Nirvana. I can't stand all of the hype and bullshit that has swirled around these cans on HF in that insane thread and otherwise, and I am not sure why people pre-ordered them who have not owned cans at that level before and have no real idea how they sound. I pre-ordered because I have been waiting for the new Senns for years, and I also heard them and think they are fantastic. In my case, though, I also own many hi-end cans and can afford them. I do understand the feeding frenzy and built up demand and all, but I am not a fan of people buying expensive items with a 50-50 chance of returning them. If Todd or Tyll has significant returns that become discounted B-stock then they are going to suffer. Why can't people wait for a meet or an audition at a shop if they are dubious about their purchase decision?
