  1. So after Geneapalooza it is evident I need a good point-and-shoot camera. I am thinking about an S95 as it has good low light specs. Is there currently any other cameras I should be considering with approximately the same form factor?

I do know about Google but I'm looking more for personal experience that can at least somewhat be trusted.

I recommended a S95 to a friend who ignored me and bought the SD4500. Long story short, he ended up returning the SD4500 and getting the S95 which he is very happy with. His primary use for this camera is low-light photography like when he goes to nice restaurants.

  2. USPS priority shipping to California. when did USPS priority become so fucking expensive? it wasn't even a large box. between the Netflix DVD stealing and this new surcharge i was hit up for (for it being a box larger than a mousetrap), i think i'm about done with them.

Couldn't use one of the flat rate boxes? I thought USPS Priority is cheaper than its FedEx and UPS equivalents.

  3. The hard drive size is for storage and does not have an effect on performance. It's used to store game saves, downloaded games from xbox live, downloadable content, and for storing the game data to play from if you want to play the games from hard drive. In the case of installing the games to hard drive, that is where you'll hit the drive limit quickly with the 4GB option. You can always upgrade later if need be.

I thought the new Xbox doesn't have a removable HDD? And I'm not even sure you'll be able to fit 1 game install on the HDD... I faintly recall that game installs on my system took in the 6gb+ range.

  4. yep. I'd add that with a good screen, the graphics of the PS3 are no better than what you can get out of an xbox360 on HDMI. but if you have an older screen or do not connect via HDMI, then there are differences in resolution. hope you can use HDMI. I opted for the xbox360, it's a bit cheaper, it has more games, and the live capability is a little less important to me (I let it lapse recently).

I believe one of the reasons you won't see the PS3's graphics advantage are because developers usually must develop for both platforms and opt to max out the xbox's capabilities. On PS3 exclusive games though, the graphics are really sweet.

  5. PS3 as it can work as a BDP and a Netflix streamer (XBox can stream Netflix as well, but I believe you need the XBox live subscription).

You're right about needing Xbox gold to access Netflix.

I don't know if this still holds true, but does the PS3 still lag in terms of games (quantity + slower release dates?)? They do still have a couple exclusive titles though (God of War and Metal Gear Solid come to mind).

  6. I was looking into those when I saw morphsci sell his old one to postjack. That postjack is too quick for me! They do seem a bit pricey brand new, but they seem to resolve all my needs at once. I'll look into that vs NAS or RAID1.

I do like the idea of having each of our laptops backed up automatically when we're on the network via wifi and also having online access to it via the 'net.

For online access to hdds, perhaps this: Pogoplug Pro enables remote access to four USB hard drives, adds inbuilt WiFi -- Engadget should be a consideration.

  7. Yeah, if it's going to be a music server, then by all means, put an SSD in it. It's too bad you can't put an SSD front-end and still have a hard drive, so that the SSD is doing all the "heavy lifting", as it were. SSD + external hard drive? Strikes me as kludgy if he has to move files every time he wants to listen to something different.

Isn't there a SSD + Platter HDD hybrid? Problem is I'm pretty sure it doesn't come in the 2.5" form factor. Actually... it looks like luvdunhill suggested it already (seagate momentus xt).
