I borrowed a Resonessence Invicta and tried converting some hi-res PCM to DSD to see how it sounded. I think the change in sound I heard is what people have been calling "more analogue". It was definitely less aggressive-sounding than the PCM. Mind you, the Invicta could be described as "cold" in presentation to begin with (but way better and without the hardness compared to your Benchmarks and Lavrys).

The 50mm high heat sinks (532-513202B25G) are out of stock at Mouser (at least for me). Will the 25mm be ok or will they get too hot?

I did a DAC-off between the Anedio D2 and a borrowed Resonessence Invicta (not the current version) as well as my Audio-gd Master 7, all straight out of a regular power strip rather than my PPP and fed via USB from my MacBook Air using Audirvana Plus without up-sampling.
The Anedio uses USB bus power for the USB receiver, which is otherwise great. It's a bit on the thin side and straight out of a power strip is a bit forward and aggressive in the mids and the bass a bit boomy. It is far nicer with better USB power and plugged into the PPP.
The Invicata (being Aussie every time I read that name I think it sounds like the name of a lawn mower) fared quite a bit better with a darker, more effortless sound giving the full sound of each instrument note, eg: drum hits had the full texture and echo in the studio. You can hear all the crazy micro detail in the Chesky binaural recordings, such as the performers shifting in their seats and the birds chirping outside, a bit of which is lost with the Anedio. It runs quite warm.
The last DAC I had compared to the Invicta was the Eximus DP1 which is so engaging that it makes the Invica sound cold, even if it doesn't deliver as much detail. Other than that, compared to the Master 7 there was pretty much nothing in it, but I felt the Master 7 conveyed more emotion in each note, that is, I just wanted to sit and listen more with it than the Invicta, similarly to how the DP1 and Zana Deux have that effect, but without seeming to sound coloured.

Given how utterly lousy the conditions were, such as low light inside and a very strong rear light out and being too far for a flash to be workable, I managed to get a few decent shots at the local marine world today. Fish are JPEG basic off the camera, in "vivid" mode. Dolphins are half from the RAW.

Also, having got the shits with the stock strap, using some spare key rings I put my spare Absolute Strap on the D800. It was VERY comfortable to carry around after that!

How readily available are the transistors for that Squarewave clone? I'm guessing the power supply would be the usual Sigma 22 or the like?

This is the kind of amp Japanese people might like. Do they work fed only 100V or would they need a custom transformer?

In the latest release it has multichannel playback on multichannel devices. Previously it was only stereo AFAIK. I'm not sure where that'd be useful, but I imagine a full 5.1 SACD rip could be played back through Audirvana to a multi-channel system.

There is Bit Perfect on the App Store too. $10, which I don't think was around when I first wrote the article. Good if you, say, want up-sampling but not DSD or multi-channel features, which I think the latest Audirvana Plus has.

Given how people lamented the passing of the 12" Powerbook and all it could do in such a small size, I reckon the 11" Air is easily its successor. I had to get a new logic board for my 17" MBP ($400) and the Air had no trouble covering for it, including handling the 36MP files from the D800 without breaking a sweat. I only had to keep a couple more apps closed than usual for best results.

Yes, seconded, thanks Ari. I need to re-read that article. It was interesting getting back home, looking at the shots and finding out what was bad as much as what was good.
Edit: Re-read it. Now I've made the mistakes it makes much more sense than it did the first time.

Amos, grats on the D800, 14-24 and 28-300 - there's nothing you're not ready for with that combo. You are keeping the 14-24, right?
The 14-24 is a loaner for a couple of months as it has been sitting unused and I'll be travelling. The 28-300 is a lazy choice, replacing the 18-200 "I can just grab the camera and take a photo" lens. I'll deifinitely get a wider prime once my wallet has recovered.
I use my 24mm prime a ZILION times more than I use the 14. Shooting the 14mm lens is hard.
Being realistic, while it is possible to do crazy photos in impossible places, I'm more inclined to actually buy a 20 or 24mm prime (but they were all sold out here when I wanted one). In the two pairs of similar shots in my last post, one was taken at 14mm and the other at 24mm. It seems to me there are only a few of situations where one could actually use it at 14mm when 24mm wouldn't work, such as grabbing the entire view of a room from one corner (especially in Japan where rooms are much smaller than in the US or Aus), events where you don't want to ask people to get out of the way when shooting stuff, or an entire object, such as a building -- basically where you can't step back at all easily and fudging it with a panorama series of shots is also hard or impossible.
A prime is also a hell of a lot lighter than this crazy beast. The full kit with flash is unpleasantly heavy. But heck it's fun! To me, the distortion with the 14-24 is often subtle enough it doesn't stand out immediately (though only in landscape, not portrait), instead giving depth to the picture, without bending everything. I like that.

Decided to have a play with the D800 and 14-24mm on the way back from the Apple Store. I wanted to get an idea how the lens behaves at its extremes and where it works well and where it doesn't. Other than that. I like contrasting facets of old Japan with modern Japan.

I caved. Took everything in to Kitamura and traded for the D800 28-300mm kit. I borrowed the 14-24mm for an extended loan too. Party time, but my 17" MBP shat itself and needs a new logic board.

Ditto ... we went to Radio Shack and got the cheapest, smallest sets we could find. And they broke at least one already, no biggie. But one's ears are too small to fit, so we had to find another cheap pair that went over her ears. Definitely discuss volume levels early and regularly. And definitely engage them with other better things regularly, and guide them over what they're listening to and playing w/ video games ... but sometimes you just need a break, esp on a long plane ride or car drive. I'm a better parent when I can have an hour here and there without them needing my absolute, complete, and constant attention, every second of the hour, every hour of the day, every day of the week ...

Daniel's first plane ride he would remember was at about that age. He was so excited, that he was jumping up and down in the boarding area, looking at the airplanes coming and going, and saying 'airplane! airplane!'.
He said this for half an hour while waiting to board, while the other passengers smiled at his joy. We boarded the plane, and he said gleefully, 'airplane! airplane!' We sat down while he smiled and laughed, 'airplane! airplane!'. When the jet engines, which were right next to us, fired up and made a huge, overwhelming roar right next to our ears, I looked over at him, and he was crying uncontrollably in terror, and mumbling under his tears and wails ...'airplane.... (waaah) airplane'. 
Just hilarious ... we still tell him that story all the time and he loves it!
Ha! My daughter whined through the entire plane trip (when she wasn't sleeping) then as soon as we got off she wanted to get back on again! Your story reminds me of the time she wanted to eat one of the black-pepper rice crackers I'd bought. She ate one, looked up at me and shouted "WATER! WATER!" Likewise she loves me telling the story about it and still loves eating them.
Vaguely on topic, my son loves going to sleep listening to Three Guitars/Friday Night in San Francisco.

The photo was with the 25mm. I have a cheap, s/h Sigma 24mm but it doesn't focus properly always. I haven't grabbed the D800 yet. It might be gone by now. If it is still there and they have a 20mm lens in stock I probably will.

I can never decide on colours, so black it is for me, always.
Even when I have both my 11" MBA and iPad in the gator, along with notebook, power cords, Pico DAC/Amp, portable drive, PX200 headphones, small flashlight, various pens and pencils, sunglasses, water bottle, and other shit I am forgetting, the standard Red Oxx strap works fine for me. But the absolute strap works well on the bigger sun chaser and Airboss when I load them up.
That sounds like what I carry, with textbooks/files or a DSLR sometimes. The pockets behind the front pockets are perfect for my backup battery and wireless/LTE thing. I don't like the strap though.

My daughter didn't tolerate even comfy headphones for long in all honesty. I have "given" her my M80s which she'll listen to music with for a short while. I set the max volume on an iPod quite low for that.
Reks: There are a lot of things I said I'd never do if I had children. Then I had children. Mind you, my daughter isn't a monster, despite my failings.

So far, Alex hasn't received any emails from either Kevin or Birgir. Why these concerns weren't first raised with Alex is really a mystery to many people. It's not that fucking hard to send an email, is it?
Also, if you have a concern with Head-Fi, you can PM me too, instead of making shit up (everything so far posted is complete bullshit) and I'll explain it. The people whose posts were deleted got an explanation. If you didn't already know, I don't (and never did) get paid to moderate Head-Fi, nor do I give a shit about who is or isn't a sponsor. I don't tolerate bullshit though, but if anyone prefers shit-talking over solving the very real issues brought up in this thread, then that's your choice.
I think though that, ultimately, the market for 'stats outside of Stax and Headamp is dead, however, and will be relegated to DIY efforts. I'm sure no manufacturer in their right mind will want to enter the market now, or even think about it.
