I bought a couple of the Glencairn Canadian whisky glasses, and I really like them. They've become my preferred glass for neat whisky, highballs, and beer. Next to original Glencairn for scale.

I love my GC Canadian whiskey glasses too.  The only ones I prefer to those are the double walled glasses that came with the flask from Aged & Ore

The Aged & Ore glasses have become my go-tos.  They are perfect for smaller cocktails and neat sipping. I really enjoy the perfectly sized ice balls too.

I had waited until last week to open them, and now I wonder why?  Those glasses and ice spheres are perfect.

I’ve had three Glencairn whisky glasses with the last one I got being crystal, and all three ended up with a crack on the lip,  ( I know I needed to be more careful ) so I decided to get two of those stainless steel glasses in the photos.

Now while I’m happy with them, I wanted one with a similar shape to the Glencairn glasses, so I’ve just placed an order for that in the photo.

Yes it’s a half pint tankard made out of pewter, but I quite like the shape and was able to order one without the handle, so it looks more like a whisky glass.

I did like those Glencairn glasses I had, but at least with the two stainless steel I have, and the pewter I’ve ordered I won’t have to worry about breaking them.

Received that pewter half pint tankard I ordered to use for drinking whisky, but without the handle, and I’m very happy with it.

For size comparison here’s a photo of it with one of the stainless steel glasses I use for drinking whisky.

With or without the handle the cost was £38 + £4.95 P & P, although it’s made in Sheffield which is around 35 miles from where I live,  so P & P will probably be more for overseas.

As well as whisky, I also like to drink stout at home, so decided to get that goblet in the photo from the same place.

You’re not going to need to make that distinction much longer.

Just found out (from my monthly whisky magazine) that DT introduced a trade tariff of 25% on single malt scotch whisky, in October 2019. Exports of single malt to the US from Scotland are down by 25% as a result. It is expected that it will fall further, because in anticipation of this move, US importers have stockpiled so the full 25% price hike has not been felt in full yet.

Here, we have frozen the duty we pay on scotch in an attempt to support the industry, and the Chancellor Rishy Sunak is going to lobby the Trump administration to get the 25% tariff scrapped.

It has been felt. We tracked it and took appropriate actions.

There are some pre tariff bottles still out there, but the industry has had to raise prices.

the tariffs + COVID has created a very strange scenario for US retailers that can be summarized as both slow and unpredictable. my observations the past two-three months...

  1. Post-tariffs but pre-COVID: any releases in this window (e.g. K&L had a number of exclusive bottlings arrive from independents) - prices are increased as-expected
  2. Post-tariffs and post-COVID: if the planned released didn't happen before COVID, it basically still hasn't happened (e.g. Kilkerran 8 year CS sherry). there have been a minuscule number of new releases actually make it stateside in the last 6-8 weeks. If they have been - some prices seem increased (e.g. Redbreast 27) but not all
  3. Existing releases or core range bottlings (e.g. things like Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10) are largely still not increased in price. this is very region-specific but it appears that most of your go-to's are not yet much increased at least for California and Illinois. There are exceptions - Springbank bottles which were already expensive are now catastrophically so (Springbank 10 is now $100 msrp... get the fuck outta here with that shit).

my answer has been to bypass all of this and try to import as much as i can from the EU. even with shipping costs and delays, the situation in EU is far more predictable and stable than the US. there are so many bottles that are so much cheaper if you import and they also are always getting independent bottlings that i'm particularly interested in.

it's a bit of a shame as i want to support my usual locals but i'm at the point where buying is very selective and i'm not typically re-stocking standard bottles.

In panic, I just checked and Springbank 10 is still $65-83 range in SoCal local stores (BevMo, Total Wine).  Still, I have noticed the price increases for Macallan, which is hard to say if due to tariff or just because Macallan is a huge ahole about price in general.

I am taking this tariff/covid as an opportunity to cut back on whiskey consumption, which must be a good thing...🤔

i've learned that the moment you think about stepping back is exactly when you should go further in...

in seriousness for the last 5-6 years all i've seen is prices going up and previous avenues to purchase select bottles has dwindled to almost nothing. this industry swell has yet to make anything cheaper nor easier to access in the US since the early 2000's (or really with the end of eBay sales later on). every time i manage a successful import i wonder if it's the last time.

FWIW Springbank 10 in the UK is £40, or the equivalent of $49 at today's exchange rate. Macallan Gold Double-Cask is £45 ($55), which is the cheapest 10 year,  but for rare bottlings you can stump up many hundreds (not for me, though!).
