I never *really* got the point of CO2 inflators. I guess it is about an ounce lighter than a pump, and a bit faster, but the whole "one chance to get it right" aspect freaks me out.

 

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about one chance to get it right?  My CO2 inflator has a trigger so you can meter out how much you put in and after filling one of my road bike tires there is certainly a lot of capacity left in the catridge.  MTB might be a different story with larger volume but that comes at substantially lower pressure.  Even pumping a road bike tire up with a small hand pump is no fun in my book.

SIlca was bought by an American and moved from Italy to Indiana. Always used to be the pump to have back in the day (still have 2). They can be a workout to get a tire up to 100+ psi with though.

So it's an "HV" (mountain) pump?

 

Not that it would matter for the Kenda happy mediums I'm currently running but ... 

 

Nah, 16g of CO2 will get you about 90psi of pressure, if you want higher you'd need a bigger CO2 cartridge. The pump itself is spec'd up to 120psi.

You guys enjoy the Civil war century. I looked and it's sold out so I won't be joining you. I'm now looking at this Indian Head 100 on Sunday 9/7 instead: http://ohbike.org/century/

 

I want to get a century in this year though I'm not really in any condition to do it at any good pace. This one is close enough to home that I can just drive, ride and then drive home. Should be interesting considering my longest ride this year was order 60 miles (or was it km?).

I spent some time working on the Calfee last night, specifically changing out the existing cassette (11-25) for an 11-28 to hopefully provide a little relief on the hills that I'll be facing in two weeks.  I really wanted to give it a good shakedown ride to work today but sadly it was raining pretty hard when I got up at 5:45 so I bailed.  Hopefully the weekend will provide an opportunity to get out for a bit.

Participated in an actual time trial race today, just to see how I'd fare. As it turns out, time trials really hurt...

Second lap was a struggle to simply keep moving and trying to not stop and puke. I really suck at pacing myself on hills :(

Some navigational challenges with forgetting my phone and having to go back and then a closed bridge that I had to work around but the riding over there is just awesome. Flat out gorgeous in some sections. Felt really good on the riding too but I had carbo-loaded excessively on pizza the night before so I'm not surprised. I'm thinking I need to host a ride where we string the two routes together and people have a half and century option. Easily could make that work, I rushed back a bit to make it to the pool with the boys.

Did 75 miles today as some sort of preparation for the CWC. Only 3100 feet of climbing though, so it is a long shot from the century course.

 

The biggest training success for me is that I finally was able to pace myself pretty well. Kept the overall highest speed in flat terrain at 18 mph max and paced also the uphills. I guess this is where training with a power meter would really help. Ended the ride feeling well, legs tired but not shot and was able to do the last 10 miles upping the speed to top 23-24 mph on flats.

I registered for the Lakes and Grapes century on the same day as the CWC and I'm thinking of doing the Back Roads Century a few weeks later on 9/21. It looks like it will be a nice moderately challenging century on a weekend I'm in town:

Yeah, it should be fun. The east side of the lake house route looks pretty sweet, I think a century ride would be fun! The Lakes and Grapes century looks pretty nice too, hope you have a good ride out there.
