Best Covers

Love this thread, brings back a lot of memories of songs I haven't heard for a while.

Agree with Dusty on bands like the Dickies: Banana Splits theme (used in one of the best scenes in Kick-Ass), Nights In White Sating, Paranoid....all great and fun covers.

Husker Du does two that I love as well: Love Is All Around (Mary Tyler Moore theme) and Eight Miles High.

The Jam did the batman theme on their first album.....

And I just remembered the Flying Lizards and their "interpretive" covers (Money, Tutti Frutti....)

One of my favorite covers, simple but fun, was one where I didn't know the original.  A NYC band, The Lost Patrol, doing a song called "Jukebox On The Moon."

I've been using WhoSampled lately.

By the way, Dan, that link leads directly to Venetian Snares' dubstep cover (cover? remix?  those are Ozzy's vocals) of "Black Sabbath", which is almost exactly what I heard in my head when we talked about me doing a dubstep remix of "Iron Man", rendering that thought moot.  I only wish he had done "Iron Man".

Does this considered as cover ? From British answer to Mariah Carey.....an extremely talented singer whom is extremely under rated......FWIR, Tomy Mottola killed her career by putting his ex wife as priority in paving a way to US music scene. If put side by side, it a very close call.... I felt she got an edge over Mariah with her majestic voice.......

Enjoyed the Zep tribute Jim, though I thought the strings etc. were a bit over the top, but fitting I guess for the concert. Overall, I thought Heart did a very good cover though. I'll have to see about seeing more of that concert.

Maybe its just me, but I far prefer NIN's original Hurt to the Johnny Cash version.

Brits can do that too (punk cover of a childrens classic - a la banana splits) . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nellie_the_Elephant

Original (it sounds so proper - what do you expect from George Martin as Producer)

Toy Dolls , Punk Stylee

There's a Top Of the Pops appearance with poor sound, if you look for it, and to close the circle as a Olga (Toy Dolls bass Player) as a guest with The Dickies ...

Cash's version of Hurt totally redefined it and made it his own in a way that the original will never be, but I'm also a huge Nine Inch Nails fanboy, and always loved the song and the way it concluded the intense The Downward Spiral, so I'm glad I live in a world where I don't have to choose one at the expense of the other.  Other than at the same time.

Not so sure this counts as a cover so much as a traditional, but who cares, "Dirty Old Town" by the Pogues really kicks the living shit out of every version that preceded it.

I think it counts quite well, and indeed is awesome; wasn't it written and performed originally by Ewan MacColl (Kirsty's father)?

I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't see that he really did anything with it (other than one lyric change). This always had the feel to me of going thru the motions for a CD to make some bux... As much as I respect Johnny Cash, it just never did anything for me.
