Close to the Edge (Deluxe Edition)

Close to the Edge (Deluxe Edition)
Yes
1972

Example:

Early in my Yes exploration I found this album. 90125 -> Classic Yes -> CttE. And it still remains one of my favorites. Two monster compositions with a little rock song stuck on the end - that being 8 minutes on its own. Another example of the deluxe not giving much. But the mix on the original three tracks sounds good.

:D good to know, I'm not a fan of MR, I can hardly see myself listening to the whole Sleep thing with full awareness.

I have, and it's amazing.  Easily my favourite work of his.  IT DOES REQUIRE PATIENCE.  Right up there with Music for Animals by Nils Frahm, if you're familiar with it.

Obscured by Clouds

Obscured by Clouds
Pink Floyd
1972

Example:

First off I have to apologize to PF (I know that they have been waiting for it). I had lumped this album into the same as the very early releases like piper and saucer. I think that it the album cover that confused me. This is a great 70s rock album. Released just before Dark Side. I am happy about this 50yo find, I will not let it go back into obscurity.

Oh yeah then I wanted to listen to Pompeii - Hey it was from 72 as well. Happy 50.

Come for the gong, stay for the howling dog. Still a great 'concert'.

I remember fondly listening to that 8 track, in my best friend's Father's 1972 Ford F150 4x4.

Al Green
1972

Example:

Really bad Album cover. But a pretty good album. It has the iconic title track, but I liked the example better. The recording quality is pretty mixed, and does not hold up to critical listening. But good for turning up and singing along.

Then I discovered he had another release in 72

With an even worse album cover!

I'm Still in Love with You

Example:

Much more consistent in the recording quality, with many iconic songs from Mr. Al. I passed on all those for this cool groove example.

While you might not be fond of the album cover, I know you must approve of the chair?

I'm quite fond of the shoes.

As the saying goes, Al Green could sing the phone book and make it sound good.

Oh damn, now I have to explain a phone book for many of our members.

Randy Newman Land of Dreams

Ex.

Her own mother came
To meet us at the station
Her dress as black as a crow in a coal mine
She cried when her little girl got off the train
Her brothers and her sisters came down from Jackson, Mississippi
In a great green Hudson driven by a Gentile they knew
Drinkin' rye whiskey from a flask in the backseat
Tryin' to do like the Gentiles do
Christ, they wanted to be Gentiles, too
Who wouldn't down there, wouldn't you?
An American Christian
Goddamn

^^ Agreed. - and Agreed.  (added to queue)

** Edit -- I have to add, I know that he was just first chair and this is not a solo work - but Michel Schwalbé should be on the album title as 'featured' at least. One of the best performances of this work, and a lot of on his shoulders. -- thx again for the reminder of this album.

Ed:Edit - Happy to report he is on the back of the album ***

Example:

So many devastating songs (title track, god's song, etc.) on this album. So I picked a simple pretty one, that also has messages. Tune in in a couple years for Good Old Boys (ooph).

Yeah, so many great songs. Strangely two about Ohio. It's probably my favorite of his, though I tend to think of him by track, not album, and there are so many good compilations (including my favorite box set of all time). Anyway, listened to Sail Away earlier today also and dug this review by someone with the username Robert Crumb

"Randy Newman's Sail Away. Not his best album, honestly. Sure, it's a fantastic collection of songs, each remarkably evocative and full-bodied; they play out like fine wine, swoosh it around in your ears, let me know what you think. But this isn't his best album. And that's no fault of this album, damn if it don't try to be the best album it can be. A million song writers would severely maim a gaggle of school children to write material half as clever, a percentage as human, as these songs are. More than anything, Sail Away is the kind of album that makes you think, "can it possibly get any more sublime?" And then you hear Good Old Boys."

Then skipping Good Old Boys for a sec, listened to...

Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Sings Newman

Then I discovered there's a... Steve Hogg's Steve Hogg Sings Nilsson Sings Newman. So now playing...
