What are you listening to Part the Third

Oh fun. I Googled Williams and Newman which led to this article

“Considering that Randy Newman has been banned from the airwaves in Boston and at least three other cities, you might think that he had written a tender ballad about a child-murderer. Or a song that makes fun of law-enforcement officers. Or one that lampoons the Catholic Church or puts down the entire city of Baltimore. Or perhaps one that takes a crack simultaneously at three idols like Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein and the United States of America.

As a matter of fact, he has done all of that and a bit more…”

‘Greil Marcus put it well in his book about rock, "Mystery Train," when he said that Newman's "songs contain an astonishing affection for every American from the middle-class couple wasting away in Florida to the rapist preying on their daughter." In the same paragraph, he summed up the destination our society prepares for art as complex and ambivalent as Newman's: "buried on an occasional FM radio or in the back of someone's record collection."’

I lied. One more, one more. I'll stop shortly as this is probably boring everyone else. There's a year old spiritual successor to Nilsson Sings Newman, though not Newman or Nilsson, all Monkees instead.

thanks Ric, I did see that in my searches, I didn't follow it at the time being in the style of, when I was searching meta at the time. Some good Monkey's tunes in there.

I didn't know that this was coming out. But glad it did. I enjoyed Roger releasing a few recordings over the pandemic, stripped down versions very well recorded. Happy to have these on high resolution streaming rather than YouTube.

Mirror Mirror

Mirror Mirror
Eliane Elias, Chick Core, Chucho Valdés
2021

https://album.link/i/1611484601

Example:

One of Chick's last recordings, and I really like it. An elegant recording of the three of them with lovely melodies and interactions. I get the sense of them recording a set piece and playing with each other at the same time, with lots of exploration in the longer works.

I am getting used to this trend of listening to an album I really like, and then a little while later getting a Tiny Desk from that artist.

I was not disappointed:

Of course I would have liked to have Chick  and Chucho there as well. Lovely set.

Never A Dull Moment
Rod Stewart

Example:

An Album I was not familiar with (save, You wear it well). He is a little shouty at times, but there are some gems as well. Maybe hanging out with Ron Wood a bit too much in the early 70s.

A little out of time, but I don't mind.

Something / Anything?

Something / Anything?
Todd Rundgren
1972

https://album.link/i/1084074389

Example:

I thought I knew this album. I really didn't. It really is something/anything. I will stick with the something (example). There are a couple of great tracks on this double album, and there are tracks of anything that in some ways pissed me off. Thinking back of someone just buying this double album, and thinking, what did I just pay for?

But don't get me wrong, big fan of Todd's and this album is full of great tracks. It just also has skippable sections.

Everything he does is worth listening to.  Big influence on my (theoretical) style -- I went back and forth on overdubbing, but he showed how playing only the essential music without a lot of overdubbed parts could still work as finished music.

This is worth a listen as well:
