Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live (1994)

Apparently it's that time a year again when I have to watch this concert... Always breaths life into me.

After listening/watching this ^^ I needed some more Paula Cole, so:

American Quilt

American Quilt
Paula Cole
2021

https://album.link/i/1558502979

Example:

I wasn't sure about this to begin with. There are a bunch of styles on this album, that I was not sure would match Paula's voice. I was happily proven wrong track after track. The Example, plus the 'audiophile system setup quality'™️ of Bye Bye Blackbird will have me coming back to this album for more. Thanks Paula.

50yo

Still Bill

Still Bill
Bill Withers
1972

https://album.link/i/989376986

Example:

I still have a handful of 50yo albums that I had in my queue as I came to the end of the year.

1538853495_Screenshot2022-12-31214511.thumb.png.1c0ab1d1f24e8922f691c0994e600976.png

But after doing some sampling, I had to go with Bill. There is the classic Lean on Me, but I had to share the 'get up and dance', Use Me. It is really a good album. Not a perfect recording, or voice, or playing. But it got the groove down perfectly. I wanted the next song to come along so I could keep head bobbing along.

Deep Purple and Jethro will remain in the queue. I will get back to the others some other time. I enjoyed the 50yo explorations, I probably wont continue it in the new year. Got too many things in my queue.

Speak for Yourself

Speak for Yourself
Imogen Heap
2005

https://album.link/i/1016968922

Example:

Thought I would share one of the lesser known, but no lesser of the songs for the Example.

I just pulled up the album to do some testing, one of my go to albums. But I cannot seem to listen to my test tracks and then not listen to the entire album.  Of note, the TIDAL mix seems to be slightly different than the 2005 CD release that I have. This maybe because of the deluxe versions that they released last decade. Not that it is bad, just slightly different than what my acoustic memory is telling me. I will have to do some more testing.

As a follow-up to this. thx.

This should have the recordings for the Mozart 20 and 23 (above).

The Paul Badura-Skoda Edition - Concerto Recordings

The Paul Badura-Skoda Edition - Concerto Recordings
Paul Badura-Skoda
2017

https://album.link/i/1452769856

Example:

Not all 47 tracks and 8 hours worth. But:

  • Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K.466
  • Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K.488

-- Paul Badura-Skoda, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, Milan Horvat

Not the greatest recordings out there - but powerful performances, both by Paul and Vienna Orchestra.

and all of these:

  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.1 in C Major, Op.15
  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.2 in B Flat Major, Op.19
  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.3 In C Minor, Op.37
  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.4 in G Major, Op.58
  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.5 in E Flat Major Op.73 -"Emperor"

-- Paul Badura-Skoda, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, Hermann Scherchen

This Beethoven that people are talking about these days. The kids got some talent with the whole piano music writing and stuff. He should branch out and try some other genres as well. I will keep and eye on him.

Fire in the West

Fire in the West
Neil Swainson
2022

https://album.link/i/1615136918

Example:

A really nice set. 10 songs over the course of an hour. With nice breaks and breakdowns, well recorded and really balanced. Hmmm, it may sound that I am lukewarm about this album. Not in the slightest, it has put me in a relaxed jazz attitude. And I like it.

Listen to a soundtrack I thought, for some light listening. Oops:

TÁR (MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE)

TÁR
Hildur Guðnadóttir, Cate Blanchett, Sophie Kauer
2022

https://album.link/i/1642488191

Example:

A combination of clips, recordings and score. Some good things in there, but it left me disjointed. It feels like those super deluxe album releases were you get a bunch of takes and talking along with a couple of songs. Interesting, but not in rotation. Maybe I need to see the movie. :}

1995 opus.

Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness

Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness
Smashing Pumpkins
1995

https://album.link/i/721224313

Example (of many):

I didn't listen to much of 'current' music in the 90s. I was all over the place once I got my first main rig. But happy to have listened to this, I really liked it, with its ebbs and flows. They are much more than the '1979' tune that we all know.

I, on the other hand, listened to a SHITLOAD of music in the 90's.  Also went to a crazy amount of concerts.  I was teased about being able to pick something that I would want to see/hear every night of the week.

If I might recommend a couple favourites:

Curve, Cuckoo and Pubic Fruit
Depeche Mode, Violator
Garbage and Version 2.0
The Gathering, Mandylion, Nighttime Birds, and How to Measure a Planet?
godhead, Nothingness and Power Tool Sigmata
Halou, We Only Love You and (technically 2001) Wiser
My Bloody Valentine, Loveless
Nine Inch Nails, Broken, The Downward Spiral, and The Fragile
Slowdive, Just for a Day, Souvlaki, and Pygmalion
Stabbing Westward, Darkest Days and Whither Blister Burn and Peel

...and probably a shitload more I'm forgetting.

Me: listening to some a capella group called Washinton University Amateurs.

Some more 'fresh' music:

Mozart: Krönungsmesse, K. 317 & Other Choral Works (Live)

Mozart: Krönungsmesse, K. 317 & Other Choral Works (Live)
Various Artists (--I think that they just didn't want to list them all)
2023

https://album.link/i/1660093617

Example:

Slightly compressed for this live recording, maybe a touch conservative on the recording engineers part (speculation). But some really nice performances.
